HPXA15 Heat Pump
Congratulations on your purchase of the Lennox HPXA15 heat pump with R410A refrigerant. Lennox manufactures high-quality products designed to keep you comfortable and reduce monthly energy bills.
Warranties
Your unit is covered by industry-leading warranties. The compressor is designed for R410A refrigerant and includes a 10-year limited warranty. All other components are covered by a 5-year limited parts warranty.
Failure to maintain your system as outlined in this manual will void your equipment warranty.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance is crucial for peak performance. Clogged filters and blocked airflow reduce efficiency.
- Locate your indoor unit's filter (at the unit or behind a return air grille). Check it monthly and clean or replace as needed.
- Use filters of the same type and size. Contact your Lennox dealer if unsure.
Important! Turn off electrical power at the disconnect switch before performing any maintenance. The unit may have multiple power supplies.
- Many indoor units have reusable foam filters. Clean these with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and let dry completely before reinstallation.
- Ensure the filter and all access panels are in place during operation.
System Features and Care
Your system may include an electronic air cleaner that removes up to 90% of airborne particles. Ask your dealer for maintenance instructions.
The indoor evaporator coil has a drain pan to collect condensate. Have your dealer show you the condensate drain line and how to check for obstructions.
Ensure unrestricted airflow to the outdoor unit. Keep the area around the unit clear of leaves, trash, or shrubs, as obstructions make the unit work harder and consume more energy. Your Lennox dealer is the best resource for care and operation of your equipment. They provide prompt, courteous, and professional service.
Seasonal Service Checks
Before each heating and cooling season, a qualified service technician should perform these checks:
- Inspect and clean outdoor and indoor coils. The outdoor coil may be flushed with a water hose. (Note: More frequent flushing may be needed if exposed to corrosive substances like pet urine or cottonwood seeds.)
- Visually inspect refrigerant lines and check coils for leaks.
- Check wiring for loose connections.
- Verify voltage at indoor and outdoor units while operating.
- Check amp-draw for outdoor fan and indoor blower motors against unit nameplate values.
- Clean or replace indoor unit filters.
- Check refrigerant charge and system pressures.
- Ensure the condensate drain line is free and unobstructed; clean if necessary.
Heat Pump Operation
Your heat pump delivers large volumes of warm air for heating, differing from furnaces that deliver hotter, lower volumes.
Frost and Defrost Cycle: Frost may appear on the outdoor coil in winter below 45°F (7°C). An electronic control initiates a 5-15 minute defrost cycle at intervals to clear frost. Steam may rise from the unit during defrost, which is normal. Auxiliary heat may engage to meet heating demand during this cycle.
Compressor Crankcase Heater: This heater protects the compressor from refrigerant slugging in cold weather. If power is interrupted for several hours, set the thermostat to "Emergency Heat" for temporary heat without risking equipment damage. Compressor operation is locked out in this mode. After a 6-hour warm-up period, switch the thermostat to "Heat" for normal operation.
Thermostat Operation -- Comfort is at Your Fingertips
While thermostats vary, their operation is generally similar.
- Temperature Setting Levers: Set levers or dials for desired heating and cooling temperatures. Avoid frequent adjustments, as turning the unit off and on before pressures equalize stresses the compressor.
- Fan Switch:
- AUTO or INT (intermittent): Blower operates only when the thermostat calls for heating or cooling. Preferred for humidity control.
- ON or CONT: Continuous indoor blower operation, regardless of heating/cooling cycles. Used for constant air circulation or filtering.
- System Switch: Set for heating, cooling, or auto operation. Auto mode automatically switches between heating and cooling. Many thermostats have an "Emergency Heat" mode that locks out the heat pump and uses auxiliary heat.
- Indicating Light: An amber light typically indicates the heat pump is operating in Emergency Heat mode.
- Temperature Indicator: Displays the actual room temperature.
- Programmable Thermostats: Offer programmable time-of-day setpoints. Refer to your specific thermostat's manual for details.
Before You Call
If your system fails to operate, check the following before calling for service:
- Ensure all electrical disconnect switches are ON.
- Verify the room thermostat temperature selector is set correctly.
- Check that the room thermostat system switch is set properly.
- Replace any blown fuses or reset circuit breakers.
- Confirm unit access panels are in place.
- Ensure the air filter is clean.
- Have your unit model number (HPXA15) ready.
