Introduction

The Lennox PCO3S PureAir™ S Air Purification System is designed to significantly improve indoor air quality by combining multiple advanced purification technologies into a single, state-of-the-art, unit. It is part of the Dave Lennox Signature® Collection.

Communicating Features

For full communication benefits, the PureAir™ S Air Purification System must be used with a Lennox® S40 Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat and a Lennox® communicating variable-speed indoor furnace or air handler. Key communication benefits include:

• Automatic detection and sending of information to the S40 Smart Thermostat regarding:
  • Dirty air filter status
  • Air filter life notification (%)
  • UVA lamp operational status (On or Off)
  • UVA lamp life notification (%)
• Unit uses a 4-wire, 18-gauge standard thermostat wiring connection to the Lennox communicating indoor unit control.

Operation

The air purification process involves:

• Return air first passes through the Carbon Clean 16® (MERV 16) media filter, which removes more than 95% of particles 0.3 microns and larger, and more than 90% of particles 0.01 microns and larger. It also captures bioaerosols like dander, pollen, bacteria, molds, and spores.
• The filtered air then passes through the UVA Lamp / PureAir™ Cartridge.
• The UVA lamp activates the photo-catalyst on the cartridge, which captures and destroys odors and chemical vapors.
• Adsorbed pollutants are oxidized into carbon dioxide and water.
• The PCO3S provides a reduction of absolute toxicity, destroying contaminants rather than just absorbing them.
• The PureAir Cartridge is self-cleaning.
• No toxic chemicals are used, and no ozone is produced; in fact, ozone is reduced by the PCO3S.
• Only requires annual maintenance.

Applications

The PureAir™ S Air Purification System combines multiple air purification technologies. Its primary function is to improve indoor air quality through:

• Filtration: The Carbon Clean 16® (MERV 16) media filter captures particles.
• Photo-catalytic Oxidation: The UVA lamp activates the photo-catalyst to capture and destroy odors and chemical vapors.
• The system reduces the toxicity of the treated air stream.
• The PCO3S is a multi-position unit that can be installed in the return air side of all types of HVAC whole-house systems.
• The unit easily adapts to upflow, downflow, or horizontal unit applications.

Installation Considerations

• The PCO3S must be installed in the return air duct upstream of the supply air blower.
• Allow a 30-inch service clearance in front of the access door.
• The control box, pleated filter, and PureAir UVA Lamp Cartridge must be removable.
• The PCO3S should be installed in a horizontal position with the access panel facing front or rear.
• The PCO3S must be connected to either a 120V or 230V power receptacle. An optional 230V power cord must be ordered separately if 230V supply is used.
• The unit must be powered continuously for contaminant destruction and extended lamp life.
• It is recommended that the air handler be set to run continuously, except during periods of high humidity (over 50%).
• Specific guidelines apply if used with an optional UV germicidal light, requiring minimum distances from the PCO3S to prevent interference. Refer to Installation Instructions for details.

Components

• 1. Carbon Clean 16® (MERV 16) Media Air Filter: A disposable pleated MERV 16 filter. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is an ASHRAE rating for airborne contaminant removal. Higher MERV ratings indicate smaller filter holes for enhanced filtration. Filters need annual replacement to prevent excessive pressure drop and maintain efficiency; more frequent changes may be needed in dusty conditions. Particles and bioaerosols are captured on the filter. Recommended annual replacement.
• 2. UVA Lamp / PureAir™ Cartridge:
  • UVA Lamp: 55-watt fluorescent, low power consumption, UVA output. Recommended annual replacement. Packaged separately for field installation. Thumbscrews allow quick access for servicing.
  • PureAir™ Cartridge: Titanium dioxide coated. Packaged separately. Recommended annual replacement.
• 3. Communication Control: Communicates filter and UVA lamp status to the Lennox® Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat.
• Control Box Assembly: Contains electrical power receptacle, electronic ballast with internal surge protector for the UVA lamp. It is hinged for easy access to the ballast and UVA Lamp / PureAir Cartridge for servicing.
• 4. Cabinet: Pre-painted steel cabinet, multi-position. Specific models are sized for Lennox air handler or gas furnace applications. See dimension drawing and Cabinet Match-Up table.
• 5. Front Panel: Removable for service access. Airflow direction can be reversed by rotating the unit. Features a view port for verifying UVA lamp operation. Includes a 3-prong, detachable 6-foot power cord for 120V connection. An optional 230V power cord is available.
