Safety and General Information
Safety First: Always follow safety instructions. Keep this manual safe and accessible for the appliance's lifetime. Ensure children do not play with the appliance and store it and its cable out of reach of children under 8 years old. Cleaning or maintenance by children over 8 should only be done under adult supervision.
General Precautions: Never immerse the appliance in water. Avoid wetting or splashing the machine with liquids. In case of liquid contact, immediately unplug the appliance and dry it carefully. Do not place the appliance near hot surfaces like gas or electric stoves, ovens, or heat sources. If the appliance or power cord is damaged, it must be repaired by a qualified technician or authorized service center. Do not modify the appliance to avoid voiding the warranty. Do not pull the power cord to remove the plug.
Usage Restrictions: This appliance is intended for household use only. It should not be used in professional environments, farms, hotels, motels, or bed and breakfasts.
Safe Operation: Always unplug the appliance before cleaning or assembly/disassembly. Allow the appliance to cool down before cleaning. Never operate the appliance without water or with the tank removed. Ensure adequate ventilation around the machine (3 cm sides, 15 cm above). Be aware of hot surfaces, water, and steam during operation.
Maintenance: Use only original Smeg spare parts. Using non-recommended parts can lead to fire, electric shock, or injury. Clean the appliance with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive materials.

Accessories: The machine comes with a measuring spoon/tamper for dosing and pressing coffee grounds, and three filters: one for coffee pads, one for single shots, and one for double shots.
Getting Started and Operation
First Use: Before first use, remove all labels and stickers. Clean and dry all components. Fill the water tank with fresh water, ensuring not to exceed the maximum level. Insert the tank and press lightly to open the valves.
Priming the Machine: Turn on the machine. Wait for the indicator lights to turn solid, indicating the set temperature is reached. Attach the filter holder with the filter. Place a container under the coffee spout and dispense hot water 5 times. Dispense hot water/steam from the steam wand.
Dispensing Modes: The machine has two menus: White Menu (standard) and Orange Menu (extended functions). Press button (23) to switch between menus. Indicator lights will change color accordingly.
Making Espresso:
- For hotter coffee: Preheat cups with hot water.
- Ground Coffee: Insert the appropriate filter (14 for single, 15 for double) into the filter holder. Fill with finely ground espresso coffee, level it, and tamp firmly. Remove excess coffee grounds from the rim. Attach the filter holder to the dispensing group and turn it clockwise until locked. Place cup(s) under the spout and press the desired button (20 for single, 21 for double). The machine will stop automatically. Wait a few seconds after dispensing before removing the filter holder.
- Coffee Pads: Insert the pad filter (13) into the filter holder. Place the pad centrally in the filter. Attach the filter holder to the dispensing group. Place cup(s) under the spout and press button (20).
Adjusting Coffee Volume: To change the dispensed coffee volume, place a cup under the spout. Press and hold the desired beverage button (20 or 21) for at least 3 seconds until its light stays on. Press the button again to stop dispensing when the desired volume is reached. This setting is saved.
Preparing Cappuccino
Steam Output: Press the steam button (22). Wait for the indicator light to become solid. Place an empty container under the steam wand (7) and turn the steam knob (8) counter-clockwise to release any residual water. Close the knob.
Frothing Milk: Fill a container with cold milk (approx. 100 ml per cappuccino). Place the container under the steam wand, ensuring the tip is immersed in the milk. Turn the steam knob (8) counter-clockwise to activate steam. Immerse the steam wand in the milk and create a vortex. Stop steaming when the optimal temperature is reached by turning the knob clockwise. Pour the frothed milk into the espresso.
Cleaning the Steam Wand: Immediately after use, clean the steam wand (7) with a damp cloth. Release a small amount of steam to clear any milk residue. For thorough cleaning, refer to the 'Cleaning and Maintenance' section.
Cooling the Heating Element: If the heating element is too hot for coffee dispensing (lights 20 and 21 blink simultaneously), allow it to cool. To speed up cooling, place a container under the steam wand (7) and dispense hot water by turning the knob (8) counter-clockwise. The wand will first emit steam, then hot water, indicating the element has cooled sufficiently.
Hot Water Dispensing: Turn on the machine. Place a container under the steam wand (7). Turn the steam knob (8) counter-clockwise to dispense hot water. Turn the knob clockwise to stop.
Settings and Customization
Accessing Settings Menu: Ensure the machine is ready. Press and hold button (23) for 5 seconds until all buttons blink, entering programming mode. Settings will be displayed on the following pages. Exit by waiting 30 seconds without pressing any button.
Coffee Temperature: Access the programming menu. Press button (20) to set coffee temperature (Low, Medium, High). The selected button will blink, and an audible signal will sound if enabled.
Water Hardness: The machine is factory set to 'Hard Water'. You can adjust this based on your local water hardness to reduce descaling frequency. Use the provided test strip to determine hardness (follow instructions on the strip). Adjust settings via button (21) (Soft, Medium, Hard) based on the test results.
Auto-Off Timer: To save energy, the machine has an auto-off function. Access the programming menu. Press button (22) to set the auto-off time (10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour). The selected button will blink, and an audible signal will sound if enabled.
Restoring Factory Settings: Press and hold buttons (21) and (23) simultaneously for at least 10 seconds. All buttons will blink once to confirm.
Activating/Deactivating Acoustic Signals: Acoustic signals are disabled by default. Press and hold buttons (20) and (23) for 5 seconds to activate or deactivate them. Button (20) will blink three times to confirm.
Cleaning and Maintenance
General Cleaning: Always unplug the appliance before cleaning. Do not immerse the appliance in water or other liquids. Allow it to cool down before cleaning. Clean the exterior with a soft, damp cloth.
Drip Tray: Remove the drip tray grid (4) and empty the drip tray (6). Clean the tray and grid with a cloth and reassemble.
Coffee Filters: Rinse filters (13, 14, 15) regularly under running water. Use the provided needle (19) to clear any blockages.
Dispensing Group: Rinse the dispensing group (2) every 200 coffees by dispensing approximately 500 ml of water without coffee.
Water Tank: Clean the water tank (11) monthly with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
Descaling: Descale when the steam button (22) blinks orange. Empty the water tank and remove the water softening filter (if present). Fill the tank with a descaling solution mixed with water according to manufacturer instructions. Place a container under the dispensing group and steam wand. Turn on the machine. Press and hold button (22) for 10 seconds until the orange LED is solid. Turn the steam knob (8) counter-clockwise. Press button (22) to start descaling. The cycle will run until the tank is empty. Rinse the tank and refill with clean water. Run a rinse cycle by dispensing water from the steam wand and dispensing group.
Safety Note for Descaler: Descalers contain acids that can irritate skin and eyes. Follow manufacturer instructions and safety warnings on the packaging.
Troubleshooting
No Coffee Output: Check water level in the tank. Ensure filters are not clogged and clean them with needle (19). Verify the water tank is correctly inserted. Perform descaling if necessary. Ensure the filter holder is properly attached and clean.
Coffee Dripping from Filter Holder, Not Spouts: Check filter openings for clogs. Ensure the filter holder is correctly attached.
Filter Holder Not Attaching: Ensure the filter holder is clean and properly attached. If the dispensing group seal is worn, contact a service center.
Machine Not Working / All Lights Blinking: Unplug the appliance and contact an authorized service center.
Pale Crema / Fast Flow: Coffee may be under-pressed or the quantity is too low. Use coffee specifically for espresso machines and adjust grind size. Press coffee more firmly.
Dark Crema / Slow Flow: Coffee may be over-pressed or the quantity is too high. Use coffee specifically for espresso machines and adjust grind size. Press coffee less firmly.
Coffee Not Hot: Increase coffee temperature in settings. Preheat cups with hot water. If the machine has been idle, run a hot water cycle.
Foam Not Optimal: Clean the steam wand thoroughly. Ensure the steam function was activated correctly and the machine reached steam temperature. The quality of foam depends on milk type and temperature.
No Steam Output: Ensure the machine has reached the correct steam temperature (button 22 solid light). Perform descaling if necessary.
