2.1 Description of Accessories

3 Use

3.1 Commissioning (Fig. G and H)

Internal circuits must be rinsed upon first use.

It is recommended to rinse the internal circuits if the machine has not been used for a long period.

3.2 Dispensing Programme Change (Fig. A)

The machine has two dispensing menus: White Menu and Orange Menu. Press the key (23) to switch between them. In the White Menu, buttons have white lights; in the Orange Menu, they have orange lights. Refer to section "2.2 Description of controls" for specific functions.

3.3 Preparing Espresso Coffee

The machine has three filters: 1-cup (14), 2-cup (15), and pod (13). Icons indicate which filter to use.

Important: To avoid spraying, do not remove the filter holder during or immediately after dispensing. Wait a few seconds after dispensing stops. BURNS HAZARD!

Ground Coffee (Fig. B-C-E-G)

After dispensing, wait a few seconds, then remove the filter holder (3) by turning it left.

Coffee Pods (Fig. B-C-F-G)

Ensure the pod flap is inside the filter, not on the edge, before dispensing.

Dispensing can be stopped anytime by pressing the key again.

After dispensing, wait a few seconds, then release the filter holder and clean coffee residues from the filter.

Setting the Quantity of Coffee

The dispensed coffee quantity can be customized:

Recommendations for Hotter Coffee (Fig. G)

If the machine has been idle for over 30 minutes, the first cups may not be at the right temperature. Repeat the procedure to obtain hotter coffee.

3.4 Dispensing Steam and Preparing a Cappuccino (Fig. H and I)

The drip tray (6) can be removed for tall cups.

For best cappuccino results, use semi-skimmed or full-fat milk at fridge temperature (approx. 5°C).

To prevent large bubbles, always clean the steam wand as described in "4 Cleaning and maintenance".

The machine is factory set to "Hard Water Level". It can be adjusted for actual water hardness to reduce descaling frequency.

The selected key flashes to confirm. An audible signal may sound.

For optimal machine operation and coffee flavour, use the optional Smeg Water Softener Filter and set water hardness to "Soft" after installation.

Setting the Automatic Shut-off Time

To save energy, the machine has an automatic shut-off function. It turns off after a period of inactivity. Press any button to turn it back on.

The LEDs flash sequentially. Press the corresponding button (20, 21, or 22) for the desired time. The selected key flashes to confirm.

4 Cleaning and Maintenance

4.1 Warnings

4.2 Cleaning the Coffee Machine Body

Clean external surfaces regularly with a soft, damp cloth after use and once cooled down.

4.3 Cleaning the Coffee Machine Components

Cleaning the Drip Tray (Fig. I)

The drip tray (6) has a red float (5) that indicates when the maximum liquid level is exceeded.

Cleaning the Coffee Filters

Clean filters (13, 14, 15) regularly under running water. If clogged, use the supplied needle (19).

Cleaning the Steam Wand (Fig. L)

Clean the steam wand (7) immediately after use.

Cleaning the Dispensing Unit

Rinse the dispensing unit (2) every 200 coffees by dispensing approx. 500 ml of water using coffee keys (20) or (21) without coffee or pods.

Cleaning the Water Tank

Clean the water tank (11) approximately once a month with a moist cloth and mild detergent.

4.4 Descaling

The machine needs descaling when the orange LED on the steam key (22) flashes. This warning appears each time the machine exits standby until descaling is performed.

Personal injury hazard: Descaler contains acids that can irritate skin and eyes. Follow manufacturer's instructions and warnings carefully. Use only Smeg-recommended descaler products to prevent damage.

What to do if...

The dispensing unit gasket is worn.Have it replaced at an authorised After-sales Centre.
The nozzle holes are blocked.Clean the nozzle holes.
The filter holder (3) will not attach to the coffee machine.The filter has been overfilled.Introduce the correct quantity into the filter using the measuring scoop supplied.
The coffee machine does not work and all the LEDs flash.The filter has been overfilled.Use the measuring scoop (12) supplied and use the correct filter.
Possible fault.Unplug the coffee machine and contact an Authorised After-sales Centre.
The "crema" of the coffee is light in colour and comes out of the nozzle quickly.The ground coffee has not been tamped sufficiently.Tamp the coffee harder.
There is insufficient ground coffee.Increase the amount.
The ground coffee is too coarse.Use only ground coffee for espresso coffee machines.
Poor quality ground coffee.Change the type of ground coffee.
The "crema" of the coffee is dark in colour and comes out of the nozzle slowly.The ground coffee has not been tamped too hard.Tamp the coffee with less force.
There is too much ground coffee.Reduce the amount used.
The dispensing unit (2) or filter (13-14-15) are blocked.Clean the dispensing unit (2) and the filter (13-14-15).
The ground coffee is too fine.Use only ground coffee for espresso coffee machines.
Lime scale build-up.Perform a descaling cycle.
The LEDs (20) and (21) flash for a few seconds.Steam knob (8) open.Turn the steam knob (8) clockwise to close it.
High heating element temperature.Cool the heating element as described on page 6.
The coffee is not hot.No water in the tank (11).Fill the tank (11).
The tank (11) is not inserted correctly.Insert the tank (11) correctly into its housing.
Machine not used for a long period of time.Increase the temperature of the coffee from the programming menu, following instructions in "Setting the coffee temperature".
The cups have not been pre-heated.Dispense hot water into the cup to heat it, as described in paragraph 3.3. Heat cups by rinsing them with hot water (the hot water function can be used).
Insufficient frothing.The steam wand is dirty.Thoroughly clean the steam wand, removing the nozzle and following manual instructions. Note: froth quality also depends on milk type and temperature.
The machine does not dispense steam.The steam function was not correctly turned on.Follow instructions in "Steam dispensing".
The machine did not reach the steam dispensing temperature.Wait until the temperature is reached (indicated by key (22) with fixed light).
Lime scale build-up.Perform a descaling cycle.

Contact local technical support if the problem is not solved or in case of other faults.
