OPERATING MANUAL
Introduction
The Fibaro Smoke Sensor is a universal, optical Z-Wave smoke sensor. It signals fire alarms through sound, a visual indicator, and by sending Z-Wave control commands. The optical sensor detects smoke at an early stage of fire, often before flames appear and temperature rises significantly. It also features a built-in temperature sensor that can signal when a set temperature level is exceeded. The device is designed for wall or ceiling mounting. The visual indicator signals fire, operating mode, and network presence. The sensor is intended for use in confined spaces under normal conditions, free from excessive smoke, dust, or condensed water vapor.

IV. Fire Detection
The Fibaro Smoke Sensor detects the physical presence of smoke. It checks for smoke every 10 seconds. Once the smoke level exceeds the value set in parameter 1, the sensor triggers an alarm.
A fire alarm is signaled by sending an alarm command to Z-Wave controller and associated devices, accompanied by an intermittent sound and a red visual indicator blinking. After the fire alarm ceases, the sensor verifies smoke disappearance before returning to normal operation, performing self-tests every 10 seconds.
ℹ️ NOTE: As described in Section IV, the sensor checks for smoke every 10 seconds. It also checks for malfunctions and tests Z-Wave communication at each wake-up interval (default 6 hours) and when sending reports, provided the range test is enabled.
⚠️ CAUTION: For greater safety, it is recommended to replace the device with a new one after a fire occurrence.
⚠️ CAUTION: If a fire alarm is triggered but the smoke level did not exceed three times the sensitivity set in parameter 1, the sound alarm can be muted by holding the B-button (temporarily reducing sensitivity). The visual indicator will continue to blink red. If the smoke level exceeds this threshold, the mute will automatically turn off, and the device will resume audible and visual alarming.
V. Programmable Excess Temperature Warning
In addition to smoke detection, the Fibaro Smoke Sensor can warn of exceeding a programmed temperature threshold. This function is disabled by default (parameter 2 settings). The excess temperature warning threshold is set by the user in parameter 30 (default 55°C). Excess temperature can be signaled by a visual indicator glow (parameter 3) and a short beep (parameter 4). Parameter 20 should not be set to 0, as this disables temperature measurements.
VI. Malfunction Detection
The Fibaro Smoke Sensor automatically detects malfunctions. An efficiency test is performed every 10 seconds. If a malfunction is detected (e.g., damaged smoke chamber), an intermittent sound signal will start, and an alarm will be sent to the Z-Wave network controller and associated devices.
If a trouble alarm is detected, it is recommended to:
- Check the power source (replace the battery).
- Check if the sensor is exposed to direct light.
If trouble alarms persist, replace the Fibaro Smoke Sensor or contact the manufacturer if the warranty is valid.
Manual Self-Test:
- Ensure the device is powered by battery.
- Press and hold the B-button until the visual indicator glows white and a short alarm sounds. After 3 seconds, the smoke chamber operation will be checked.
A triggered fire alarm and beep indicate a positive result (within 10 seconds). A trouble signal or no alarm indicates a malfunctioning sensor.
⚠️ CAUTION: When the self-test is triggered manually, the Fibaro Smoke Sensor sends control commands to the Z-Wave network controller and devices in the 1st Association group. The procedure lasts as long as the B-button is held (completes within 10 seconds after release).
⚠️ CAUTION: Any service or repair must be carried out by the manufacturer. The expiry date is indicated on the device's back.
VII. Detecting Lack of Z-Wave Range
When included in the Z-Wave network, the Fibaro Smoke Sensor tests communication. By default, this occurs with each temperature report (depending on parameters 20 and 21) and via polling. A lack of Z-Wave communication may be signaled by an intermittent alarm sound and a violet visual indicator blinking. These signals are disabled by default but can be enabled via parameters 3 and 4.
If a lack of Z-Wave communication alarm is reported, wake up the device by triple-clicking the B-button. If the alarm persists, verify the Z-Wave network and main controller operation. The alarm will cancel once communication is re-established, either manually or automatically.
VIII. Sensor's Sensitivity Level Configuration
The optical smoke detector has 3 sensitivity levels compliant with EN 14604:2005. The default setting is medium sensitivity. Sensitivity is configured via parameter 1 using the main Z-Wave controller.
IX. Resetting the Fibaro Smoke Sensor
A reset erases all device memory, including Z-Wave network and main controller information.
Reset Procedure:
- Ensure the device has the battery installed.
- Press and hold the B-button for 3 seconds. The visual indicator will glow white.
- A short signal will sound. Release the B-button.
- Wait until the visual indicator glows yellow, indicating entry into the 4th menu level.
- Briefly press the B-button to confirm the menu level choice.
A successful reset is confirmed by the visual indicator changing to red and fading, accompanied by a short beep (similar to power connection).
⚠️ CAUTION: The reset procedure should remove the Fibaro Smoke Sensor from the main Z-Wave controller's memory (depending on controller version). Removing the device from the Z-Wave network will automatically reset the sensor.
X. Operating Through the Z-Wave Network
The Fibaro Smoke Sensor is a multi-channel device with a smoke detector and a temperature sensor. In the Home Center menu, it appears as two devices, depending on the controller software version.
The Fibaro Smoke Sensor ignores incoming BASIC SET commands and returns its alarm status via BASIC GET commands (0 for no alarm, 255 for alarm active).
XI. Associations
Through association, the Fibaro Smoke Sensor can control other Z-Wave network devices, such as dimmers, switches, shutters, plugs, or scenes. Association enables direct communication between Z-Wave devices, bypassing the main controller, which is useful even if the controller is damaged.
The Fibaro Smoke Sensor supports five association groups:
- 1st group - Lifeline: Reports device state. Only the Z-Wave network controller can be set here. Modification is not recommended.
- 2nd group - Fire Alarm: Sends a BASIC SET control command upon smoke detection. Can control up to five on/off devices.
- 3rd group - Tamper: Sends a NOTIFICATION REPORT (TYPE = BURGLAR, EVENT = PRODUCT COVERING REMOVED) upon enclosure opening detection. Can include up to five devices supporting enclosure opening commands.
- 4th group - Fire Alarm: Sends an ALARM SENSOR REPORT (TYPE = SMOKE ALARM) upon smoke detection. Can include up to five devices supporting fire alarm commands.
- 5th group - Tamper: Sends an ALARM SENSOR REPORT notification (TYPE = GENERAL) upon enclosure opening detection. Can include up to five devices supporting SENSOR ALARM REPORT commands.
Each association group (2-5) can control up to 5 regular or multi-channel devices, while group 1 controls one device.
To add an association using the Home Center interface, go to device settings, select the "Advanced" tab, and specify the group and devices to associate. Sending information to associated devices may take several hours.
