Introduction
The Rossmax Peak Flow Meter is used to measure peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), an important indicator of your lung function. The Peak Flow Meter should be used for monitoring respiratory conditions such as asthma. Taking peak flow measures every day and keeping a record of the peak flow measures in your "peak flow diary" can help you and your physician make important decisions about your treatment. You should use this meter and set its color zone indicators according to a treatment plan developed for you by your physician. Please download the peak flow record chart at our website www.rossmax.com. It is important to keep your peak flow meter clean when in use.
Attention: Consult the accompanying documents. Please read this manual carefully before use. For specific information on your own PEFR, contact your physician. Please be sure to keep this manual.
How to Use
- Set red indicator to bottom of scale.
- Stand up, take a deep breath, place your mouth around the peak flow meter and hold it horizontally, your lips form a tight seal.
- Blow the air out as hard and as fast as possible. The number where indicator stops is your peak measurement.
Note: Coughing and spitting into the meter will adversely affect your reading and should be avoided.
Repeat the steps 1, 2, 3 twice more to obtain three readings. Record the highest reading in your daily record chart.
Troubleshooting
Examine peak flow meter regularly to make sure it is working properly. The moving parts should function smoothly and freely and indicator should remain in place when moved to a position of scale. If unusual readings are obtained, consult your doctor. Please contact Rossmax service if necessary. With proper care, avoid crushing and keep it clean and dust free, your peak flow meter should last at least one year and up to three years, suggest replacing a new unit.
Cleaning and Disinfection
Clean at least once every week by immersing peak flow meter in warm (but not hot) mild detergent water solution for 2-3 minutes (max 5 minutes). Agitate the meter to ensure through cleaning. Rinse in clean warm water and shake gently to remove any excess water and air dry completely before using again.
Do not boil meter for disinfect.
Caution
Using a peak flow meter to monitor respiratory condition such as asthma should be under the care of physician. A peak flow meter is intended for single patient use unless it is cleaned thoroughly after each use and disposable mouthpieces are used. Mouthpieces are available.
How to Record Your Peak Expiratory Flow Rate
This meter was designed to make following your asthma treatment plan easy. Your doctor will set the color zone indicators to your personalized zones based on your personal best peak expiratory flow rate value (the best peak flow value you can achieve).
Note: Do not change the position of the color zone indicators yourself. If this should occur inadvertently, contact your doctor or specialist nurse for advice.
Reading should be taken twice a day, first in the morning and at bed time, or directed by your physician. When you blow into your peak flow meter, the indicator will rise to your peak flow value. Your peak flow measurement will fall into one of three zones.
Color Zones:
- Green: Follow your regular medication plan, and go ahead with normal activities (80-100% of best reading).
- Yellow: Caution, your asthma might be worsening. Follow your medication instructions to get back to your green zone (50-80% of best reading).
- Red: Medical alert, get medical advice and attention immediately (< 50% of best reading).
