Black & Decker Spacemaker Can Opener - Use and Care Manual
Important Safeguards
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed, including:
- Read all instructions.
- To protect against electrical hazards, do not immerse the appliance in water or other liquid.
- Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
- Unplug from outlet when not in use, before putting on or taking off parts, and before cleaning.
- Avoid contact with moving parts.
- Do not mount unit over or near any portion of a heating or cooking appliance or a sink or basin.
- Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or after the appliance malfunctions, or has been dropped or damaged in any manner. Return appliance to the nearest authorized service facility for examination, repair or electrical or mechanical adjustment.
- The use of attachments not recommended or sold by the appliance manufacturer may cause fire, electric shock or injury.
- Do not use outdoors.
- To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock do not operate any heating appliance beneath the mounted unit.
- Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter or touch hot surfaces.
- Do not open pressurized (aerosol-type) cans.
- Do not open cans of flammable liquids such as lighter fluids.
Polarized Plug (120V Models Only)
This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not modify the plug in any way.
Electrical Cord
The cord of this appliance was selected to reduce the possibility of tangling in or tripping over a longer cord. If more length is needed, use an extension cord rated no less than 15-amperes. (For 220 volts rated products, use an extension cord rated no less than 6-amperes). When using an extension cord, do not let it drape over the working area or dangle where someone could accidentally trip over it. Handle cord carefully for longer life; avoid jerking or straining it at outlet and appliance connections. If the power supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or its service agent or a similarly qualified person in order to avoid a hazard.
How to Use
Choosing a Mounting Location
Your ††Spacemaker® Can Opener is designed to be mounted under a cabinet. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN CANS OR SHARPEN KNIVES UNLESS THE UNIT IS PROPERLY MOUNTED. When selecting a mounting location:
- Consider your normal work pattern and the possible addition of other under-the-cabinet appliances.
- Do not mount above cooking/heating appliances or near a sink. Do not mount the unit behind, under or in front of under-cabinet lighting appliances.
- Be sure to mount the Can Opener within reach of an electrical outlet.
Installing Your Can Opener
- Determine if your cabinet has a flush (flat) bottom (A1) or an overhang (lip extending down) bottom (A2). Use one (1) 1/2" (12 mm) Spacer Assembly even if you have no overhang.
- If your cabinet has an overhang, measure it to determine how many Spacer Mounting Assemblies you will need. Use the guide provided in the manual for specific measurements.
- With cabinet doors open, use the 1/4" (6 mm) Mounting Assembly as a guide to mark one rear and one front hole. Adjust placement for overhangs or flush bottoms as described. Ensure the can opener clears the cabinet door when closed. Mark the 2 holes with a pencil (B). Remove the Mounting Assembly.
- Empty the bottom shelf. Clean the underside of the cabinet. Cover the counter top to catch wood chips.
- CAUTION: Wear eye protection when drilling.
- Make a starter hole. Hold the 1/4” (6 mm) drill vertically at the hole marks and drill up through the bottom of the cabinet.
- Place a plastic washer on each screw. Drop the screw through the drilled hole from inside the cabinet. Repeat for the remaining screw and washer (C).
- For cabinets with an overhang, push the proper number of Spacer Assemblies onto the screws. Line up the 2 holes in the top of the Can Opener with the exposed screws and tighten the screws into the top of the Can Opener.
- Drape the cord toward an outlet and use the Cord Hook to hold the cord out of the way. NOTE: NEVER USE TACKS THROUGH OR AGAINST THE CORD TO HOLD IT.
Can Opening Tips
- This Can Opener should not be used to open cans with a pull tab, peel-off foil seal, or rolling key.
- It will not open rimless cans or cans with angled corners.
- Frozen juices or foods in cardboard cans should be opened right from the freezer. Aluminum lids won’t stick to the Magnet.
To Open a Can
- Plug the cord into an electrical outlet.
- Lift the Operating Lever, tip the can so the rim is under the Locating Post, then push down on the Lever, ensuring the cutter blade is inside the rim (D). The hands-free feature means you don't need to hold the Lever down or the can during cutting, though you may need to support very tall or heavy cans.
- When the can is opened, the Can Opener will stop automatically. To remove the can, hold it with one hand and raise the Lever with the other. CAUTION: Avoid contact with the cut edges of the can or lids — they are sharp. Carefully discard the lid from the magnet.
Knife Sharpening Tips
- Clean and dry knives before sharpening.
- Do not attempt to sharpen serrated blades, as this will smooth their edges. Do not attempt to sharpen scissors.
Using the Knife Sharpener
- The slot in the Knife Sharpener is slanted for left or right-handed use.
- For best results, sharpen the entire blade length in one continuous stroke, carefully pressing down on the blade as you pull it through the slot (E). Repeat for desired sharpness. Use caution when washing and drying knives after sharpening.
To Open Bottles
- The bottle opener is at the bottom of the unit and requires a side-to-side motion to remove metal bottle caps.
- Grasp the bottle, position the cap under the metal “hook” and pull sideways to the right (F). IMPORTANT: Be sure the “hook” is not under the bottle neck or the glass may break. For more control on larger bottles, hold the bottle with two hands.
Care and Cleaning
- Before cleaning, unplug the cord.
- Lift the Operating Lever up as far as it will go and press down on the Blade Release Lever. Carefully grip the Blade Assembly and pull it away from the Can Opener (G). Wash in sudsy water by hand and dry thoroughly. Do not put the Blade Assembly in the dishwasher.
- Before replacing the Blade Assembly, wipe the Can Opener body, knife sharpener (certain models) and area around the drive wheel with a slightly damp cloth or sponge. To replace the Assembly, insert it into the Assembly opening, twist until it is “seated,” and push into place.
