Opentherm Setup and Configuration
Opentherm is an automated modulating control method used by modern heating systems. Instead of cycling a boiler on and off, modulating control adjusts the heat output to match the thermostat's demand. This leads to greater system efficiency, energy savings, and increased comfort.
Initial Setup Steps:
- Establish connections and power the receiver before inserting batteries into the thermostat.
- After inserting batteries, the thermostat will power on. Press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to choose your language, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to choose the time format (12/24 hour), then press Select to confirm.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to set the hour, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to set the minute, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to set the year, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to set the month, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to set the day, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to select the day of the week format, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to activate or deactivate daylight saving time. Press Select to confirm.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to select your temperature precision (0.1°C or 0.5°C). Press Select to confirm.
When Opentherm is connected, the thermostat software automatically adapts to Opentherm parameters.
Thermostat RT520 Contact Description:

- L: Live (230V AC)
- NO: Normally Open contact
- COM: Common contact
Opentherm - Domestic Hot Water (DHW)
- Press MENU.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to access the DHW submenu, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to adjust the temperature, then press Select.
The thermostat will return to the main screen. The text bar indicates that hot water is active.
Standard Setup and Configuration
Follow steps 1 to 17 from the Opentherm Setup section.
Note: Using Up/Down Arrows, you can choose PI (Step 2) or INTERVAL (Step 6). Choosing one option excludes the other.
PI (Proportional-Integral Mode): PI control is a self-learning function that ensures economical system operation by maintaining temperature more precisely and limiting overload conditions. It provides stable room temperature, minimizes energy consumption, and achieves significant savings.
The RT520 offers 3 types of PI control:
- For radiators (6 Cycles Per Hour - CPH)
- For underfloor heating (3 CPH)
- For electric heating (9 CPH)
Use Up/Down Arrows to select the PI type, then press Select to confirm.
Hysteresis: Hysteresis is the difference between the set temperature and the temperature at which the boiler turns on.
Use Up/Down Arrows to select the Hysteresis value you wish to use. Press Select to confirm.
Optimum Start: This is a selectable function that, based on the room's ambient temperature, starts the boiler operation at the optimal time to reach the set temperature. This saves energy by running the boiler for the minimum required time.
Optimum Stop: Calculates the house's cool-down time and turns off the boiler as early as possible, preventing unnecessary operation. If there is a sudden loss of heat during this period, Optimum Stop is cancelled to restore comfort conditions.
Programming - Automatic Mode
In this mode, the user can define the thermostat's schedules (the target temperature for specific periods). The programming mode should utilize all periods.
Use Up/Down Arrows to select the program type:
- +2 (Program for weekdays and weekend): Defines separate schedules for weekdays and weekends.
- All (Set a program for the entire week): Defines a single program for all days.
- Daily (Daily program): Defines a unique program for each day.
Press Select to confirm.
Repeat the process for all periods.
Use Up/Down Arrows to select the set temperature for each period, then press Select.
Owner Settings
Owner settings are a PIN-protected feature allowing property owners to set a service reminder on the thermostat, alerting the tenant when the boiler requires annual servicing. Once the owner mode is activated, the device locks the setpoint temperature defined by the installer/owner. To unlock, the owner must be contacted, and the boiler must be serviced.
- Press MENU.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to access the owner submenu, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to enter the PIN code. Press Select to confirm each digit.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to select ON, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to select the expiry date, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to select the temperature lock setting, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to select the warning period, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to enter the phone number. Press Select to confirm each digit.
The thermostat will return to the main screen.
Pairing RT520TX Thermostat with Receiver
If you are using the RT520RF pack, the pairing between the thermostat and receiver is done at the factory.
During the pairing procedure, ensure the thermostat and receiver are at least 1 meter apart.
If you purchased the RT520TX and RXRT520 separately or wish to re-pair the thermostat with the receiver:
- Ensure the device is disconnected from the power supply.
- Set the receiver switches to AUTO and ON.
- Connect the receiver to power and wait for the red LED to light up.
- Switch to OFF and then back to ON quickly. The blinking red LED will confirm entry into pairing mode.
- Press MENU on the thermostat.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to access the Pairing submenu, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows, select Pairing, then press Select.
The pairing process takes up to 10 minutes.
Testing the Pairing Process:
- Press MENU.
- Use Up/Down Arrows to access the Pairing submenu, then press Select.
- Use Up/Down Arrows, select Test, then press Select.
The test process takes up to 10 minutes.
Once devices are paired, the receiver's LED turns solid red. During the test, the receiver's red and green LEDs will blink.
Factory Reset
To reset the thermostat, simultaneously press MENU, Down Arrow, and +HR for 5 seconds.
The device will restart automatically. Owner settings will not be reset.
