Connection Examples
Live Performance Setup
This diagram illustrates a typical live performance setup. It shows the Behringer XENYX mixer connected to various audio sources and outputs. Inputs include microphones (e.g., XM8500 via [XLR]), a bass guitar (via DI100 to MIC 4), and other line-level instruments. Outputs are directed to active PA speakers (B215D and B208D) via the [MAIN OUT]. The mixer also connects to external effects processors (FX2000), portable digital recorders, and MP3 players via its various input/output options, including [FX SEND] and [STREAM USB/RCA].
Home Studio Setup
This diagram depicts a home studio configuration. The Behringer XENYX mixer is shown connected to microphones (e.g., XM8500, C-1), a keyboard, and other line-level sources. The outputs are routed to studio monitors (B2031A, B212D) via the [MAIN OUT]. Connections are also made to a headphone amplifier (HPS3000) and a V-AMP3, utilizing the mixer's [PHONES/MONITOR] output and other line inputs/outputs.
Controls
XENYX 1002SFX / XENYX 1202SFX Controls
This section details the various control elements on the mixer.
- 1. MIC (XLR)
- Balanced microphone input via [XLR] connector. Features switchable +48V phantom power for condenser microphones. The preamplifiers provide high gain with low noise.
- 2. LINE IN (1/4" TRS)
- Balanced line-level input via [1/4" TRS] connector. Can also accept unbalanced mono [1/4"] plugs. Use either the MIC or LINE input on a channel, not both simultaneously.
- 3. GAIN
- Adjusts the input signal level. Turn fully counter-clockwise when connecting or disconnecting a source. Adjust during performance until the peak signal causes the CLIP indicator to briefly light, then reduce slightly.
- 4. EQ
- 3-band equalizer on all mono input channels, offering up to 15 dB of boost or cut for bass, mid, and treble frequencies. Center position is flat.
- 5. LOW CUT
- A steep low-cut filter on mono channels to remove unwanted low-frequency signals.
- 6. FX
- Effects send control for routing signal to the internal effects processor or an external effects unit via the [FX SEND] output. Each FX send is mono with a maximum gain of +15 dB.
- 7. PAN
- Determines the channel's position in the stereo panorama. Features constant power characteristics.
- 8. LEVEL
- Determines the channel's level in the main mix.
- 9. CLIP
- Input signal is too high, causing distortion. Reduce the [GAIN] control until the indicator no longer lights.
- 10. STEREO LINE IN
- Two balanced [1/4"] [TRS] jacks for left and right line-level inputs. If only the 'L' jack is used, the channel operates in mono. USB audio is routed to the last stereo channel pair. Plugging into the jacks disconnects USB audio, selecting jack audio. Left channel (MONO) function is not available on the last stereo channel.
- 11. FX
- FX send for stereo channels. Stereo inputs are summed to mono before being sent to the mono FX bus.
- 12. BAL
- Balances the left and right input signals relative to each other before routing to the main stereo mix bus. Functions like the [PAN] control when the channel operates in mono.
- 13. 12 dB BOOST
- Switch on stereo inputs to match home recording levels with studio level inputs.
- 14. FX TO MAIN
- Routes the internal effects signal to the main mix. If turned fully counter-clockwise, no effects signal is present in the main mix.
- 15. FX SEND
- Connector outputs the signal picked up by the [FX] controls from individual channels. Can be connected to the input of an external effects device.
- 16. PHONES/MONITOR
- Stereo headphone jack. Unbalanced [MONITOR OUT] jack carries the main mix signal (including effects) or only the [STREAM] or [FX] signals. The [PHONES/MONITOR] control adjusts the level for headphones and main monitor output.
- 17. MAIN MIX
- [MAIN OUT] connectors are balanced [1/4"] jacks. The [MAIN MIX] fader adjusts the volume of these outputs.
- 18. STREAM INPUT
- Used to introduce external sources like CD players via [RCA] connectors or computers via [USB]. Can also function as standard stereo line inputs.
- 19. STREAM OUTPUT
- These connectors take the signal from the [MAIN OUT]. They are unbalanced with a 12 dB attenuation. Connect to the input of recording devices.
- 20. STREAM TO MIX
- Press to route [USB] and [STREAM IN] signals to the main mix.
- 21. STREAM TO MONITOR
- Press to route [USB] and [STREAM IN] signals to the headphone and monitor outputs.
- 22. FX TO MONITOR
- Press to monitor the effects send signal in headphones or monitor speakers. This mutes the main mix signal in the monitor when routing the [FX SEND] output to the monitor.
- 23. +48V PHANTOM
- Phantom power switch activates +48V phantom power on all mono [XLR] connectors for use with condenser microphones. The +48V indicator lights up when phantom power is active.
- 24. POWER
- Turns the unit on and off. Always ensure power amplifiers and speakers are turned down or off before switching the mixer on or off.
- 25. LEVEL INDICATOR
- High-precision 4-segment display shows signal levels.
- 26. SIGMAL / CLIP Indicators
- The SIG indicator shows if a signal of sufficient level is present. The CLIP indicator lights when the signal is too high, causing distortion. Ensure the CLIP indicator only lights occasionally.
- 27. PROGRAM
- Selects effects presets. Turn the [PROGRAM] control to scroll through presets; the selected preset number flashes on the display. Press the [PROGRAM] control to confirm the selection.
- 28. PHANTOM
- Press this button to send +48V phantom power to the [XLR] inputs for use with condenser microphones.
- 29. POWER
- Turns the device on and off. Always ensure power amplifiers and speakers are turned down or off before switching the mixer on or off.
- 30. USB Connector
- Connect the mixer to a computer using a standard [USB] cable.
- 31. AC POWER IN
- Insert the supplied power adapter here. The mixer cannot be powered via the [USB] bus. Always use the supplied power adapter.
Using the Mixer
Setting Input Gain
To set the channel gain correctly, first set the input channel's [LEVEL] control to its center position (0 dB). Then, increase the input gain using the [GAIN] control until the signal peak on the level meter shows 0 dB. When recording digitally, the peak meter of the recording device should not overload. While analog recording can tolerate some overload, digital recording distorts rapidly. Behringer's peak meters display levels that are almost independent of frequency. A recording level of 0 dB is recommended for all signal types.
