Connecting the Switch to the Network
For Gigabit connections, use Category 5e (Cat 5e) Ethernet cables or higher, terminated with RJ-45 connectors.
Connection Example
A diagram shows the Nighthawk Switch connected to a router, an internet source, a primary gaming device, a primary media streaming device, a high-speed device, and other network devices.
Cables and Speed
The following table describes the network cables to use for switch connections and the speed these cables can support, up to a distance of 100 meters.

Port LED Connection Speed
The port LEDs indicate the connection speed for powered devices connected to the switch. The default LED colors for the ports and their associated speeds are shown in the following table.

Setup Steps
- Connect the LAN 1 (UPLINK) port on the switch to the LAN port of the router connected to the Internet.
- Connect the gaming device to port 10, the high-speed device to port 2, and all other devices (including additional gaming and streaming devices) to the remaining ports 3 through 9.
- Connect the power adapter to the switch.
The blue power LED on the top of the switch will light up, as will the port LEDs for the connected devices.
Accessing the Switch
When accessing the switch, ensure the latest firmware version is running on the device. To find related documentation, firmware, software, or other files, visit www.netgear.com/support.
Accessing the Switch from a Windows Computer
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Click the Network link.
- If prompted, enable the Network Discovery feature.
- Under Network Infrastructure, locate the switch.
- Double-click Nighthawk SX10 (xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx) (where "xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" indicates the switch's MAC address). The Web management interface login page displays.
- Enter the switch's default password, which is password. The switch's IP address displays on the home page.
Accessing the Switch from the NETGEAR Insight App
During initial setup, you need to connect the switch to a WiFi network so you can access the switch from your mobile device connected to the local WiFi network.
- On your iOS or Android mobile device, go to the respective app store, search for the NETGEAR Insight app, and download it.

[Google Play icon] - Connect your mobile device to the WiFi access point that is connected to the switch.
- Open the NETGEAR Insight app on your mobile device.
- If you do not have a NETGEAR account, tap CREATE NETGEAR ACCOUNT and follow the on-screen instructions.
- To log in to your NETGEAR account, tap LOG IN and enter your credentials.
- Provide a network name and specify an administrator password for the device that applies to all devices you add to the network. Tap the NEXT button.
- Add the switch using one of the following options:
- Enter the serial number
- Scan the barcode
- Perform a network search
Note: You might be prompted to connect the switch to power and an uplink. Since this has already been completed (see Connecting the Switch to the Network), tap the NEXT button.
- The NETGEAR Insight app detects the switch and registers it to the network name provided in step 6. If the application does not detect the switch, ensure that your mobile device and the switch are connected to the same WiFi network.
- In the NETGEAR Insight application, select the switch and tap the Visit Web Interface link. The local browser interface login page displays.
- Enter the switch password. The default password is password. The password is case-sensitive. The HOME page displays.
Accessing the Switch from the NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool
The NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool allows you to discover your switch on the network and access the switch's local browser interface from a Mac computer or a 64-bit Windows computer. To download the NETGEAR Discovery Tool for your switch, visit www.netgear.com/support/product/netgear-switch-discovery-tool.aspx.
Note: Temporarily disable your firewall, Internet security system, or any antivirus programs if you have installation problems or if you cannot detect the switch. Make sure to re-enable the security services on your computer after installing and detecting the switch.
