User Manual

Introduction

The T7 Shield Portable Solid-State Drive (PSSD) combines exceptional performance desired by photographers and videographers with the durability required for everyday use. Intelligently designed by Samsung, this lightweight and pocket-sized drive provides consumers and professional content creators confidence to store data on-the-go, knowing their data is protected against drops, water, dust, or desert heat. It is the latest addition to the popular Samsung Portable SSD T-series and includes Samsung software for enhanced security and access to Samsung's Magician management software suite.

Professional Grade Performance and Great Capacity

The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield utilizes the NVMe™ protocol, leveraging the USB 3.2 Gen2 interface for maximum bandwidth up to 10Gbps. This offers fast and easy transfer of photos and videos, with read/write speeds up to 1,050/1,000MB/s, significantly faster than current SATA-based portable SSDs and external HDDs. The T7 Shield is optimized for outstanding sustained read and write performance, even as the drive fills up, supporting demanding tasks like high-quality video recording, editing, and encoding, and minimizing concerns about inconsistent performance affecting video rendering or quality. It is available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, suitable for storing extensive 8K video content and thousands of photos.

1) Based on internal test results

Designed for Durability – Dust, Water and Drop Resistance

Building on the compact and reliable nature of previous Samsung Portable SSD T-series, the T7 Shield adds robust durability. It features a strong aluminum body encased in rubber for toughness. The aluminum body enhances robustness and heat dissipation due to its high thermal conductivity. The rubber coating provides a secure grip, protects against scratches and stains, and helps withstand external shocks. For added protection against water and dust, Samsung has integrated two barriers around the USB-connector port. The T7 Shield has achieved IP65 certification from an internationally accredited laboratory and has passed internal tests for drops from up to three meters (9.8 feet). This durable design allows users to take the T7 Shield on outdoor photo shoots or travel adventures without worry about damage from natural elements or accidental drops.

2) IP Rating refers to IP Code or Ingress Protection Code defined in IEC 60529, rating the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against dust and water.

3) The certification of the IP rate (KCTL) is effective in countries and accreditation organizations that are members of the ILAC (104 countries). If the T7 Shield has been immersed in water, dry it thoroughly before using it. Damage caused by liquid and dust are not covered under warranty.

4) The internal free fall shock test was conducted under controlled conditions.

Built for Use Indoors and Out

With a non-operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C and an operating temperature range of 0°C to 60°C, the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield is designed to withstand extreme temperatures. This makes it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, those requiring extra durability, or adventurous photographers and videographers on the go.

Management Software

The T7 Shield includes upgraded software for PCs and Macs to help users set up passwords and receive the latest firmware updates. A mobile app for Android smartphones and tablets is also available. The Magician software (version 7.0, released September 2021) supports Samsung Portable SSDs, allowing users to benchmark performance, perform PSID reverts for factory resets, use security functions like password registration, and receive firmware updates.

Multi-device Compatibility

The Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield is designed for seamless connection with various devices. It is power-efficient and adheres to USB power standards, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of host devices. To optimize battery life, the T7 Shield operates at low power when connected to most mobile devices (phones/tablets). It also delivers fast, sustained write performance, making it suitable for content creators and professionals using broadcasting cameras. Leveraging Samsung's expertise in manufacturing diverse devices from TVs to mobile products, the T7 Shield offers broad compatibility.

System Requirements

1. USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) Interface Support

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a serial input/output interface standard for connecting various devices. The T7 Shield's data transfer speed is optimal with USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). Using lower versions like USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps), USB 2.0, and 1.1 may result in lower performance due to inherent interface limitations.

* Performance may vary depending on the user's system. The T7 Shield's performance may be suboptimal if your system does not support UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) even when using USB 3.2 Gen 2 connections. Ensure your system supports UASP.

2. Operating System Requirements

  • Windows OS: Windows 7 or higher
  • Mac OS: Mac OS X 10.10 or higher
  • Android: Android Lollipop or higher

* The 4TB version of the T7 Shield is only compatible with a 64-bit OS.

3. File Formats

The T7 Shield is pre-formatted to use exFAT files, supported by Windows OS, Mac OS, and Android operating systems. Table 1 shows how data formatted to a certain format may be read or written depending on the OS. For use with a single OS, formatting with the appropriate file format for that OS is recommended.

File FormatsWindows OSMac OS
exFATBoth read and writeBoth read and write
NTFSBoth read and writeRead only
HFSNot recognizableBoth read and write

* When using exFAT across multiple operating systems, data writing may become locked, allowing only data reading. To restore write access, follow these instructions:

  • Mac OS: Connect the T7 Shield to your Mac again and perform Eject.
  • Windows OS: If prompted that write access is disabled, click "Scan and fix" to perform Check Disk (CHKDSK). If the prompt was closed, you can alternatively: select the drive → right-click → Properties → Tools → Check.

Capacity of T7 Shield Displayed on the System

The capacity reported by the system may differ from the labeled capacity due to differences between decimal and binary measurement systems, and factors like drive partitioning and blocking. For example, Windows OS uses 1 GB = 1,024MB, while Mac OS uses 1GB = 1,000MB. Labeled capacity uses the decimal system: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Your computer may show a lower capacity if it uses a different measurement standard.
