Programming Residential Systems with Lutron LED Drivers

Application Note #658 | Revision C | November 2021

Overview

Lutron LED drivers offer smooth, flicker-free, high-performance dimming, addressing LED compatibility issues. They support zone control via 2-wire or 3-wire dimmers, or individually addressable fixtures with HomeWorks digital control. This note details programming best practices for Lutron residential systems.

Wiring Diagram Overview

Proper wiring is crucial for selected drivers. Diagrams illustrate differences between 2-Wire, 3-Wire, and EcoSystem controls.

2-Wire Controls

An analog control method using a single line-voltage, phase-control signal from the dimmer to the driver on a dimmed hot wire. All drivers on the same circuit are controlled together.

Neutral Wire Application

Diagram shows a Lutron Neutral-wire Forward Phase Dimmer connected to Line/Hot and Neutral. Dimmer output connects to Hi-lume 1% 2-Wire LED Driver. Driver +V connects to LED Light Engine, -V to LED Light Engine. Ground connections are present.

Non-Neutral Wire Application

Similar to Neutral Wire Application, but uses a Lutron Non-Neutral-wire Forward Phase Dimmer. Connections are otherwise identical.

3-Wire Controls

Analog control where dimmers set intensity via phase-control on a dimmed hot wire, and separately switch power via a switched hot wire.

Diagram shows a Lutron 3-wire Dimming Control connected to Line/Hot and Neutral, with Switched Line/Hot and Dimmed Line/Hot outputs. Dimmed Line/Hot connects to Hi-lume 1% driver. Driver +V and -V connect to LED light engine. Ground connections are present.

EcoSystem Digital Controls (HomeWorks QS only)

Provides fixture addressing and status feedback for easy digital assignment of sensors and controls without complex wiring. Enables energy-saving schemes managed via software. Drivers are digitally addressed for specific commands.

Diagram shows connections from Line Voltage to a Hi-lume 1% driver, with EcoSystem Digital Link outputs E1 and E2 connecting to the LED light engine. Notes mention EcoSystem drivers are no longer available.

HomeWorks Digital Controls (HomeWorks only)

Allows individual fixture addressability for easy zone reconfiguration and space changes without rewiring, providing a soft, incandescent-like transition.

Diagram shows connections from Line Voltage to a HomeWorks Digital LED Controller, with +V and -V outputs to the LED Light Engine, and outputs to the HomeWorks Digital Link.

Hi-lume 1% 2-Wire Driver

Provides smooth, continuous, flicker-free, 1% dimming for constant-current or constant-voltage LED fixtures.

UL® Marking and Compatibility

Details UL® recognized and UL® Listed Class P markings and their compatibility with controls. Notes on date codes and using controls with asterisks if markings are unknown.
