Important Note on Pool Liners:
Inspect your pool liner carefully before installation. Do not install if the liner is brittle, has wrinkles, stones, roots, or metal corrosion, or if the base or supporting walls are damaged. Consult a professional for necessary repairs.
Prepare the Pool and Filtration System
- Ensure the pool bottom does not have a deep hopper or slope.
- Manually vacuum the pool.
- Backwash or clean the filter per manufacturer's instructions.
- Clean the skimmer basket and pump strainer basket.
- Inspect the return side plumbing for leaks and repair any found before installing the Zippy.
Wall Adapter Installation
The Zippy connects to your pool's filtration system via a return inlet fitting. An adapter assembly is included to fit various pool return inlet types.
- Turn the pump off.
- Remove the return inlet fitting from the wall fitting on your pool wall. Do not loosen or remove the wall fitting itself.
- Identify your wall fitting type: 1 1/2" Female Fitting, 1 1/2" Male Fitting, or 2" Male Fitting.
- For 1 1/2" Female Fitting: Thread the Wall Adapter into the wall fitting.
- For 1 1/2" Male Fitting: Remove the male-to-male adapter from the Wall Adapter, then thread the remaining Wall Adapter onto the wall fitting.
- For 2" Male Fitting: Remove both the male-to-male adapter and the threaded insert from the Wall Adapter, then thread the remaining Wall Adapter onto the wall fitting.
Note: If your pool has multiple return inlets, plug unused inlets to ensure sufficient flow for the Zippy. Consult your pool professional for appropriate plugs.
Hose Assembly
- Lay hoses straight in the sun for 1 hour to remove kinks or memory.
- Measure the hose length from your return inlet to the farthest point in the pool to determine the total Zippy hose needed.
- Connect hose sections by inserting the male end into the female end. A loud snap indicates a proper connection, and sections should swivel easily.
- Connect the 2 ft. hose section to the Wall Adapter and the Star Control® Assembly to the opposite end of the 2 ft. hose section.
- Connect the required number of 5 ft. hose sections to the Star Control Assembly. Ensure hose floats are assembled correctly: the first hose section from the cleaner head receives two hose floats, subsequent sections receive no floats.
- Thread the head connector (attached to the first hose section) onto the cleaner head.
- Submerge the Zippy head in the pool, tilt it to release air until bubbles cease, then lower it to the pool bottom.
Note: If you need additional hose sections, contact your Zodiac dealer.
Adjusting the Flow
The Zippy uses a patented Star Control® Assembly to regulate flow.
- Turn on the pump.
- To set the flow, grasp the small end of the Star Control (attached to the 2 ft. hose) in one hand and the white adjusting nut in the other.
- Turn the adjusting nut clockwise to increase flow or counter-clockwise to decrease flow. Adjust until the black indicator line on the Star Control aligns with the yellow color band in the indicator gauge.
The Zippy should move through the pool, slowing or stopping at walls. When it slows, the jet nozzle should swing freely to change direction.
Star Control Assembly Guide:
Indicator Color | Condition |
---|---|
Blue | Flow is insufficient. Increase flow by turning the Star Control clockwise to align the black indicator line with the yellow area. |
Black | Flow is low for most pools. Increase flow to the yellow indicator range if the cleaner doesn't cover the entire pool. |
Yellow | Optimal setting for most aboveground pools. |
Orange | Flow is higher than normal; may be required for very large pools. |
Red | Flow is excessive. Reduce flow by turning the Star Control counter-clockwise to align the black indicator line with the yellow area. |
Cleaning the Zippy® Filter
- Turn off the pump.
- Lift the Zippy head out of the pool.
- Disconnect the Zippy head from the hose.
- Drain the Zippy by turning it with the jet nozzle towards the pool surface.
- Place the Zippy on a level surface. Hold the lower body and twist the upper body using the tabs to separate them. Lift the upper body off.
- Lift the filter screen from the separated halves and rinse it. Empty and rinse the bottom half of the cleaner to remove debris.
- Reassemble by placing the cleaned filter screen into the bottom half, ensuring the center cone points down.
- Position the top half over the bottom and twist until locked. Connect the hoses to the Zippy head.
- Submerge the head, tilt to release air, and lower it to the pool bottom. Turn the pump on.
Note: Do not leave the Zippy connected to the wall fitting on the ground, as this may cause unintentional draining of your pool.
Care and Maintenance
The Zippy requires minimal maintenance. When adding chemicals, especially during super chlorination or shocking, remove the unit and hose by unthreading the Wall Adapter. Reinstall after at least 4 hours.
Backwashing Your Filter System:
It is important to disconnect the Zippy when backwashing your pool filter system. Turn the Wall Adapter counter-clockwise to remove it from the pool wall fitting. Reinstall after backwashing is complete.
Note: The filter must operate for at least 3 minutes after backwashing to flush out suspended material before reinstalling the Zippy.
