Educational Information

Why is it important to monitor percentage body fat (%BF)?

Weight change alone doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle loss. Monitoring %BF is key for weight management and health. Optimal %BF varies by age and gender.

Body Fat Percentage (%): 5%-60%
Standard Age (Men) Age (Women)
20-2930-3940-4950-5960+ 20-2930-3940-4950-5960+

Moderately High21-2322-2424-2625-2726-2829-3130-3231-3332-3333-35
High>23>24>26>27>28>31>32>33>34>35

Source: University of Illinois Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

How is percentage body fat (%BF) estimated?

Estimated using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). A low-intensity electrical signal is sent through the body. The difficulty the signal encounters (impedance) is measured to estimate %BF. %BF and %TBW may not add up to 100%.

Note: %BF estimates are approximations. Consult a physician for clinical methods.

Why is it important to monitor percentage Total Body Water (%TBW) in the body?

Water is essential for body functions, making up 50-70% of body weight. Monitoring %TBW can be a health indicator. Hydration levels and certain diseases can affect %TBW.

Body Water Percentage (%): 43%-73%
Optimal TBW % Range
Men4 to 14%: 70 to 63%
15 to 21%: 63 to 57%
22 to 24%: 57 to 55%
25 and over: 55 to 37%
Women4 to 20%: 70 to 58%
21 to 29%: 58 to 52%
30 to 32%: 52 to 49%
33 and over: 49 to 37%

Source: Derived from Wang & Deurenberg: "Hydration of fat-free body mass". American Journal Clin Nutr 1999,69833-841.

Note: %TBW estimates are approximations. Consult a physician for clinical methods.

When should I use the scale's body fat and total body water functions?

For best accuracy, use at the same time daily (e.g., before breakfast) and avoid hydration swings. Tracking your own baseline changes is more valuable than comparing to population norms.

What is the Calorie Predictor®?

Estimates daily calorie needs based on body composition and user data, useful for weight management and exercise programs.

Muscle Mass - Why should I know it?

Lean muscle mass decreases with age. Maintaining muscle mass is important for strength, bone density, joint flexibility, and metabolism. Gaining muscle burns more calories.

Cautions

How to Mitigate Possible Interference

  1. Keep scale and Bluetooth device within 3-30 feet (0.9-9 meters) with clear line of sight.
  2. Keep other Bluetooth devices at least 3 feet away.

Questions and Answers

How exactly is my body fat being measured?

Using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). A small current passes through the body via the feet. The resistance (impedance) to this current is used to estimate body fat and body water. The current is minimal and may not be felt.

What is the value of the current passing through me when the measurement is taken? Is it safe?

The BIA technology is safe, non-invasive, and harmless, with current measured at less than 1mA. However, individuals with pacemakers or other implantable medical devices should avoid using this device. It is also not recommended for pregnant women due to unknown effects on the fetus.

Why is the Athlete Mode necessary in a Body Fat Scale?

Body fat estimation using BIA may overestimate %BF in elite athletes due to physiological variations in bone density and hydration. Athlete Mode adjusts for this.

What is the definition of an Athlete?

For this scale, an athlete is defined as a person who consistently works out approximately 3 times per week for 2 hours per occurrence. Professional athletes or bodybuilders may require specialized calibration.
