This document provides original instructions for the Milwaukee M18 CHD FUEL cordless rotary hammer.

Operating Instructions

Battery Management

Inserting/Removing Battery Pack:

  • To remove the battery pack, press the release buttons and pull the pack away from the tool.
  • To insert the battery pack, slide it into the tool until it clicks into place. Ensure it is securely seated.

Battery Charge Level Indicator:

The battery pack features an indicator with LEDs showing the charge level: 78-100%, 55-77%, 33-54%, 10-32%, < 10%.

Bit Insertion and Preparation

SDS-plus Bit Insertion:

  1. Apply grease to the SDS-plus bit shank for smooth operation and longevity.
  2. Insert the bit into the chuck.
  3. Push the bit in and rotate it until it locks into place.
  4. Test the bit by pulling and pushing it to ensure it is securely engaged.

Mode Selection:

The tool features a mode selector dial allowing selection between:

  • Hammer Drilling (for concrete and masonry)
  • Drilling (for wood, metal, plastic)
  • Chiseling (for light demolition or scraping tasks)

Drilling Operation

Starting and Stopping:

  • Press the trigger switch to start the tool.
  • Release the trigger switch to stop the tool.
  • The auxiliary handle should be used for better control, especially during demanding tasks.

Drilling into Walls:

  1. Mark the desired drilling location and depth.
  2. Align the drill bit with the mark.
  3. Start drilling at a low speed, ensuring the bit tip is in contact with the surface.
  4. Apply steady pressure in a direct line with the bit. Avoid excessive pressure which can cause the bit to bend or break.
  5. For hammer drilling, the tool will automatically engage the hammering action.

Cold Hammering:

If the tool has been stored in cold temperatures, lubrication may stiffen. To warm up the tool:

  1. Insert a bit.
  2. Run the tool against a scrap piece of concrete.
  3. Pull and release the trigger every few seconds until normal hammering action resumes. This may take 15 seconds to 2 minutes depending on temperature.

Safety Warnings

WARNING! Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

  • General Safety: Wear ear protection. Use auxiliary handles. Hold by insulated gripping surfaces to avoid contact with hidden wiring.
  • Long Drill Bits: Never operate at speeds higher than the drill bit's maximum rating. Start drilling at low speed with the bit tip in contact with the workpiece. Apply pressure in line with the bit.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses. Protective clothing, dust mask, gloves, sturdy footwear, helmet, and ear defenders are recommended.
  • Dust Hazard: Dust produced may be harmful. Do not inhale dust; wear a suitable dust protection mask. Do not machine materials hazardous to health (e.g., asbestos).
  • Stalling: Switch off immediately if the insertion tool stalls. Do not restart while stalled, as this can cause recoil. Determine and rectify the cause of stalling (e.g., tilted bit, pierced material, overload).
  • Hot Surfaces: The insertion tool may become hot during use. Be cautious of burns when changing tools or setting the device down.
  • Workpiece Security: Clamp workpieces with a clamping device. Unclamped workpieces can cause injury and damage.
  • Battery Safety: Remove battery pack before any work on the machine. Do not dispose of batteries in household waste; recycle them. Avoid short circuits. Use only Milwaukee chargers for Milwaukee batteries. Keep batteries and chargers dry. Avoid extreme temperatures. Battery acid may leak; wash skin immediately and seek medical attention for eye contact.
  • High Capacity Batteries: Always use a side handle with 9.0 Ah or higher capacity battery packs due to increased torque.
  • Fluid Hazard: Never immerse the tool, battery pack, or charger in fluid to prevent short circuits.

Noise and Vibration Information

Measured values determined according to EN 60745.

Noise Levels:

  • Sound Pressure Level (Uncertainty K=3dB(A)): 90.25 dB(A)
  • Sound Power Level (Uncertainty K=3dB(A)): 101.25 dB(A)
  • Wear ear protection!

Vibration Values (Hammer-drilling in concrete):

  • Emission value (ah): 12.4 m/s²
  • Uncertainty K: 1.5 m/s²

Vibration Values (Chiselling):

  • Emission value (ah,cheq): 10.4 m/s²
  • Uncertainty K: 1.5 m/s²

The vibration and noise emission levels are measured in accordance with a standardized test and may be used to compare tools. Actual exposure may vary based on application, accessories, and maintenance.

Battery Care and Handling

  • Recharge battery packs that have not been used for some time before use.
  • Temperatures above 50°C (122°F) reduce performance. Avoid heat/sunshine.
  • Keep charger and battery pack contacts clean.
  • For optimum battery life, fully charge after use. Remove from charger when fully charged.
  • Storage (longer than 30 days): Store below 27°C, away from moisture, at 30%-50% charge. Recharge every six months.
  • Battery Pack Protection: The tool will shut off if the battery overheats or experiences extreme torque/stalling. Release the trigger to reset. The fuel gauge flashes if the battery pack temperature is too high; wait for it to cool down.
