This section details the installation procedures for Danfoss TE 5, TE 12, TE 20, and TE 55 thermostatic expansion valves.
Valve Components and Connection
Diagrams illustrate the internal components of the thermostatic expansion valve, including the diaphragm, spring, and needle assembly. The valve is designed for connection to refrigeration lines.
Installation Steps
The installation process involves connecting the valve to the refrigeration line, inserting the element, and securing the valve body. Specific torque values must be observed for secure and proper installation.
- Step 1: Connect the valve to the refrigeration line.
- Step 2: Insert the valve element.
- Step 3: Secure the valve body.
Torque Specifications and Tools
For proper installation, adhere to the following torque specifications:
- Minimum torque: 7 Nm (0.7 kpm / 5 ft-lbs)
- Maximum torque: 10 Nm (1 kpm / 7 ft-lbs)
Required tools include an Allen key M6 and a specific TE55 spanner M6.
Pipe Connection Sizes
The valves are compatible with various pipe sizes, indicated by Outer Diameter (OD) ranges:
- 12-16mm (1/2-5/8 in.)
- 18-22mm (3/4-7/8 in.)
- 25-35mm (1-1 3/8 in.)
Technical Specifications and Capacity Data
This section provides key technical specifications, including factory settings, superheat calculations, and nominal capacity data for various refrigerants.
Factory Settings and Superheat
The factory setting for superheat is typically SS = 4°C (7°F).
The superheat calculation is defined as: SH[K] = t1[°C] - ps[°C].
Superheat accuracy varies by model series:
- TE5 and TE12: Normal (N) approximately 0.5°C (1°F) superheat, Broad (B) approximately 1.5°C (3°F) superheat.
- TE20 and TE55: Normal (N) approximately 0.5°C (1°F) superheat, Broad (B) approximately 1.0°C (2°F) superheat.
Nominal Capacity Table
The following table lists the nominal capacities (in Tons of Refrigeration - TR and Kilowatts - kW) for different valve types, orifice numbers, and refrigerants. Note that new orifices and elements are marked with 'MWP 28 bar' on the box.

1) Change to TE5 valve body and element.
Important Notes
When combining previous and new orifices and elements, it is essential to control the superheat in the system. New orifices are identified by code numbers 067B27** and 067G27**. New elements are marked with 'MWP 28 bar' on the box.
The maximum test pressure (Ptest max.) is 32 bar (465 psig).
