The symbol (crossed-out bin with underline) means that used devices should not be disposed of in domestic waste, but should instead be taken to special collection and return systems. Owners of used devices from private households can take them free of charge to collection points of public waste disposal authorities or to disposal points set up by manufacturers and distributors under the Electrical Equipment Act. This ensures environmentally friendly disposal and recovery of valuable raw materials. Improper disposal can release toxic ingredients into the environment, causing harm to humans, animals, and plants. Businesses marketing electrical and electronic devices are also obliged to take back used devices.
Waste prevention makes a valuable contribution to protecting the environment. If possible, continuing to use or repair the device, or passing it on to another user, represents an ecologically beneficial alternative to disposal.
