Introduction
Emerson's DeltaV™ v11 introduced Electronic Marshalling, providing enhanced control system I/O performance, flexibility, and ease of use. It offers single-channel granularity, fully redundant communications, and plug-and-play I/O. Electronic Marshalling with Distributed CHARMs allows CHARMs to be installed closer to field devices, reducing engineering and installation efforts. Direct wiring from field devices to CHARMs in a junction box eliminates the need for loop sheets. Instrument loop checks are simplified as many field devices are automatically recognized in DeltaV. Multicore cables are replaced with Ethernet cables connecting various signal types back to the CHARM I/O Cards (CIOC) or CHARMs Smart Logic Solvers (CSLS).
Benefits
Reduce total install cost: Distributed CHARMs significantly lowers wiring and cable tray costs, along with associated labor. It also decreases the effort for wire preparation, termination, and labeling. Traditional loop sheets become less necessary or are eliminated. Wiring from terminations to field devices is simplified as devices are directly terminated to the CHARM I/O Block near the field devices, eliminating complex wire path documentation. Instrument loop checks are minimized due to direct communication between smart devices and the DeltaV system. Construction and EPC engineering costs are reduced by lessening field construction requirements.
Product Description
The Distributed CHARMs hardware includes:
- The CHARM I/O Gateway, which connects to the CIOC or CSLS carrier or a CHARM baseplate.
- The CHARM I/O Block, featuring 12 CHARM slots, installable near field devices.
- The IS CHARM I/O Block, featuring 12 IS CHARM slots, installable near field devices.
The CHARM I/O Gateway, CHARM I/O Block, and IS CHARM I/O Block are equipped with Scanner Modules and Ethernet I/O Ports (IOP) for communication between the CIOC/CSLS and each CHARM via full-duplex 100BASE-TX Ethernet. These products support either a star or a fault-tolerant ring topology using copper Ethernet.

CHARM I/O Gateway
The CHARM I/O Gateway Carrier houses the CHARM I/O Scanner Module(s) and IOP(s), and optional protection covers for simplex configurations.
- CHARM I/O Scanner Module: Can be installed as simplex or redundant. DeltaV SIS installations require redundancy.
- CHARM I/O Gateway 8-port IOP: For star Ethernet topology, can be installed as simplex or redundant. Redundancy is required for DeltaV SIS.
- CHARM I/O Gateway 1-port IOP: For fault-tolerant ring Ethernet topology, requires two IOPs.
- CHARM I/O Scanner Module Protection Cover: Used for simplex configurations.
- CHARM I/O Gateway IOP Protection Cover: Used for simplex star Ethernet topology.

CHARM I/O Block
The CHARM I/O Block supports all non-IS CHARMs and LS CHARMs, but not IS or LS IS CHARMs. It supports redundant power and has terminals for two 24V DC power inputs, plus twelve shield return terminals.
- CHARM I/O Block Carrier: Holds the CHARM I/O Scanner Module(s), IOP(s), and protection cover(s). Supports up to 12 CHARMs and their terminal blocks.
- CHARM I/O Scanner Module: Same module used in the Gateway. Redundancy is required for DeltaV SIS.
- CHARM I/O Block IOP: Used for star and ring topology. Simplex configuration requires IOP placement to match the Gateway's 8-port IOP. Redundancy is required for DeltaV SIS.
- CHARM Terminal Blocks: Up to 12 supported.
- Address Plug Terminal Block: Provides addressing for the blocks.
- CHARMS or LS CHARMs: Up to 12 supported.
- Horizontal Channel Identifier Label/Wiring Cover: Protects terminations and holds labels.

IS CHARM I/O Block
The IS CHARM I/O Block supports up to 12 IS CHARMS and their IS terminal blocks. It does not support IS or LS IS CHARMs.
- IS CHARM I/O Block Carrier: Houses the IS CHARM I/O Scanner Module(s), IOP(s), and protection cover(s). Supports up to 12 IS CHARMs.
- CHARM I/O Scanner Module: Same as used in non-IS configurations.
- CHARM I/O Block IOP: Similar functionality to the non-IS version, with redundancy required for DeltaV SIS.
- IS CHARM Terminal Blocks: Up to 12 supported.
- Address Plug Terminal Block: For IS addressing.
- IS CHARMS or LS IS CHARMs: Up to 12 supported.
- Horizontal Channel Identifier Labels: For IS CHARM I/O Block protection and labeling.
