Chapter 5: Door Signage
5.1 Door Signage: ANSI/BHMA A156.10: Standard for Power Operated Pedestrian Doors
Sliding doors are supplied with door sign decals to alert and instruct pedestrian traffic on the operation and function of the door. The method of activation determines the combination of decals required. Not all decals will be used in every application. Safety signs are specified in ANSI A156.10, American National Standard for Power Operated Pedestrian Doors.
5.1.1 All Swinging, Sliding and Folding Doors: All sliding doors shall be equipped with signage visible from both sides of the door reading: "AUTOMATIC CAUTION DOOR", with letters a minimum of 1/2" [12.7 mm] high.
5.1.2 Sliding Doors:
- IN EMERGENCY PUSH TO OPEN: Install with sliding doors that have breakout doors and shall be applied to the side appropriate for egress. Signs shall have red backgrounds with contrasting letters a minimum of 1" high. Signs shall read horizontally and be located next to the lock stile on a centerline 36" minimum and 60" maximum from the floor.
- STAND CLEAR: Sliding doors that slide alongside an adjacent sidelight or wall shall be equipped with a sign that instructs users to stand clear of the sliding door travel path. The letters shall be a minimum of 1" high on a contrasting background and located from 36" to 60" from the floor.
- ACTIVATE SWITCH TO OPERATE: Doors shall also have an "ACTIVATE SWITCH TO OPERATE" sign on the side of the door with a knowing act switch. Each sign should have 1/2" high minimum letters.
- AAADM Safety Information Label: This AAADM label outlines safety checks that should be performed daily on automatic sliding doors. Place the label in a protected, visible location on the door frame, near the power switch if possible.

Chapter 7: Daily Safety Check Procedures
7.1 Automatic Sliding Doors: Review safety-related items and perform checks periodically as noted.
(Description of Fig. 7.1.1 Safety Information label: This figure displays the 'SAFETY INFORMATION' label, which details the minimum daily safety checks required for automatic sliding doors. These checks include ensuring the door opens correctly when approached, remains open when a person stands motionless, and closes slowly and smoothly after a person moves away. It also covers checking floor conditions, door condition, and signage, and emphasizes the need for annual inspections by a certified professional.)
Daily Safety Checks (as per Safety Information label):
- Walk toward the door at a normal pace. The door should open when you are about 4 feet from the door.
- Stand motionless on the threshold for at least 10 seconds. The door should not close.
- Move clear of the area. The door should remain open for at least 1.5 seconds and should close slowly and smoothly.
- Repeat steps 1 through 3 from the other direction if the door is used for two-way traffic.
- Inspect the floor area. It should be clean with no loose parts that might cause a user to trip or fall. Keep the traffic path clear.
- Inspect the door's overall condition. The appropriate signage should be present.
- Have the door inspected by an AAADM certified inspector at least annually.
[WARNING] DO NOT USE DOOR if it fails any of these safety checks or if it malfunctions in any way. Call a qualified automatic door service company to have the door repaired or serviced.
