4. Setup and Assembly
Assembly is generally straightforward. It is recommended to assemble the chair on a soft, clean surface to prevent damage. An estimated assembly time for one person is approximately 30 minutes to an hour.
Assembly Steps:
- Attach Casters to Base: Insert each of the five casters into the holes at the end of each leg of the chair base. Push firmly until they click into place.
- Insert Gas Lift: Place the gas lift cylinder into the center hole of the assembled chair base. Cover the gas lift cylinder with the gas lift cover.
- Attach Mechanism Plate to Seat: Align the mechanism plate with the pre-drilled holes on the underside of the seat cushion. Ensure the front of the mechanism plate faces the front of the seat. Secure with the appropriate bolts and washers from the hardware pack using the provided Allen wrench.
- Attach Armrests to Seat and Backrest: Attach the armrests to the sides of the seat cushion using the specified bolts. Do not fully tighten yet. Then, align the backrest with the armrests and the seat. Secure the backrest to the armrests using the remaining bolts. Once all bolts are in place, tighten them securely. Note: Some users have reported issues with bolt labeling in step 1 for attaching the mechanism plate to the seat. Ensure you use the correct bolts for each connection point.

- Connect Seat Assembly to Gas Lift: Carefully place the assembled seat and backrest onto the gas lift cylinder, ensuring the tapered end of the gas lift fits securely into the mechanism plate.

5. Operating Instructions (Adjustments)
Your STAPLES Lockland chair features several adjustments to customize your seating experience for optimal comfort and support.
5.1. Seat Height Adjustment
To adjust the seat height:
- To Raise: While seated, lift the lever located on the right side of the chair (under the seat) and slightly lift your weight off the seat. The seat will rise. Release the lever at the desired height.
- To Lower: While seated, lift the lever and apply your full weight to the seat. The seat will lower. Release the lever at the desired height.
5.2. Tilt Tension Adjustment
The tilt tension controls the amount of force required to recline the chair. To adjust:
- Locate the round knob under the front-center of the seat.
- Turn the knob clockwise to increase tilt tension (making it harder to recline).
- Turn the knob counter-clockwise to decrease tilt tension (making it easier to recline).
5.3. Tilt Lock
The tilt lock allows you to lock the chair's backrest in an upright position or allow it to recline freely.
- To Lock Upright: Push the height adjustment lever inwards towards the center of the chair.
- To Unlock/Allow Recline: Pull the height adjustment lever outwards away from the center of the chair.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance will help prolong the life and appearance of your chair.
- Cleaning: For bonded leather surfaces, wipe with a soft, damp cloth. For tougher stains, use a mild leather cleaner and follow the product instructions. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Hardware Check: Periodically (every 3-6 months) inspect all bolts and screws to ensure they are tight. Re-tighten any loose hardware to maintain stability and safety.
- Caster Care: Keep casters clean from hair and debris to ensure smooth movement.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter any issues with your chair, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chair is wobbly or unstable. | Loose assembly bolts. | Check and tighten all assembly bolts, especially those connecting the armrests to the seat and backrest. |
| Seat height adjustment not working. | Gas lift cylinder malfunction or lever not engaged. | Ensure the lever is fully engaged. If the issue persists, the gas lift cylinder may need replacement. Contact customer support. |
| Chair does not recline or is too stiff/loose. | Tilt lock engaged or tilt tension incorrectly set. | Disengage the tilt lock (pull lever outwards). Adjust the tilt tension knob (under the seat) to your preference. |
| Casters do not roll smoothly. | Debris caught in casters. | Turn the chair over and remove any hair, dust, or debris from the caster wheels. |
