Operating Instructions

Using the Meat Probe (Internal Temperature)

The foldable stainless steel probe is used for accurate internal temperature readings of food items.

  1. Unfold the probe completely to turn on the thermometer.
  2. Insert the tip of the probe into the thickest part of the food, avoiding bone or gristle.
  3. The internal temperature will be displayed on the "PROBE TEMP" section of the screen within 2-3 seconds.
  4. Refer to recommended internal temperatures for various meats (often found on the back of the device or in cooking guides).

Using the Infrared (IR) Sensor (Surface Temperature)

The IR sensor allows for non-contact measurement of surface temperatures, ideal for griddles, pizza ovens, and other hot surfaces.

  1. Ensure the probe is unfolded and the device is on.
  2. Point the IR sensor (located at the top of the device) towards the surface you wish to measure.
  3. Press and hold the SCAN button. The surface temperature will be displayed on the main screen.
  4. Release the SCAN button to hold the reading.
  5. The laser pointer (not visible to the naked eye during use) assists in targeting the measurement area.

Understanding Distance-to-Spot Ratio (D:S)

The TP420 has a D:S ratio of 12:1. This means that from a distance of 12 inches, the IR sensor will measure a 1-inch diameter spot. To measure a smaller area, move closer to the target. To measure a larger area, move further away.

Distance-to-Spot Ratio Explanation

Adjusting Emissivity

Emissivity refers to an object's ability to emit infrared energy. Different materials have different emissivity values. For more accurate IR readings, especially on various surfaces, you can adjust the emissivity setting (E) from 0.1 to 1.0.

Common Emissivity Values:

Changing Temperature Units (°F/°C)

To switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C), press the °C/°F button located on the device.

MAX/MIN/AVG Modes

The TP420 can display maximum, minimum, and average temperature readings from the IR sensor.

Backlight

The display features a backlight for improved visibility in low-light conditions. The backlight automatically activates when the probe is unfolded or a button is pressed.

Auto-Off Function

To conserve battery life, the thermometer will automatically turn off after 90 seconds of inactivity (no button presses or probe movement).

Maintenance

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
No display / Device won't turn on
  • Check battery installation and polarity.
  • Replace batteries if they are low or depleted.
  • Ensure the probe is fully unfolded to activate the device.
Inaccurate probe readings
  • Ensure the probe tip is inserted into the thickest part of the food, avoiding bone or fat.
  • Allow sufficient time (2-3 seconds) for the reading to stabilize.
  • Verify the probe is clean and free of debris.
Inaccurate IR readings
  • Adjust the emissivity setting (E) to match the material being measured.
  • Ensure the target area is within the D:S ratio for accurate measurement.
  • Clean the IR sensor lens if it appears dirty.
Display shows "LO" or "HI"
  • The temperature being measured is outside the device's operating range (-58°F to 1022°F for IR, -58°F to 572°F for probe).
