Setup
Battery Installation
The ThermoPro TP420 requires 2 AAA batteries (included). To install or replace batteries:
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
- Open the battery cover.
- Insert the 2 AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery cover securely.
Initial Power On
To power on the device, simply unfold the stainless steel probe. The display will illuminate and show the current temperature readings.

Operating Instructions
Using the Meat Probe (Internal Temperature)
The foldable stainless steel probe is used for accurate internal temperature readings of food items.
- Unfold the probe completely to turn on the thermometer.
- Insert the tip of the probe into the thickest part of the food, avoiding bone or gristle.
- The internal temperature will be displayed on the "PROBE TEMP" section of the screen within 2-3 seconds.
- Refer to recommended internal temperatures for various meats (often found on the back of the device or in cooking guides).

Figure 4: Demonstrates inserting the probe into meat to measure internal temperature, highlighting the fast and accurate readings.
Using the Infrared (IR) Sensor (Surface Temperature)
The IR sensor allows for non-contact measurement of surface temperatures, ideal for griddles, pizza ovens, and other hot surfaces.
- Ensure the probe is unfolded and the device is on.
- Point the IR sensor (located at the top of the device) towards the surface you wish to measure.
- Press and hold the SCAN button. The surface temperature will be displayed on the main screen.
- Release the SCAN button to hold the reading.
- The laser pointer (not visible to the naked eye during use) assists in targeting the measurement area.

Understanding Distance-to-Spot Ratio (D:S)
The TP420 has a D:S ratio of 12:1. This means that from a distance of 12 inches, the IR sensor will measure a 1-inch diameter spot. To measure a smaller area, move closer to the target. To measure a larger area, move further away.

Adjusting Emissivity
Emissivity refers to an object's ability to emit infrared energy. Different materials have different emissivity values. For more accurate IR readings, especially on various surfaces, you can adjust the emissivity setting (E) from 0.1 to 1.0.
- Press the MODE button to enter emissivity adjustment mode.
- Use the UP and DOWN arrows to change the emissivity value.
- Press MODE again to confirm and exit.
Common Emissivity Values:
- Hot Food: 0.93
- Frozen Food: 0.90
- Oil: 0.94
- Ice: 0.98

Changing Temperature Units (°F/°C)
To switch between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C), press the °C/°F button located on the device.
MAX/MIN/AVG Modes
The TP420 can display maximum, minimum, and average temperature readings from the IR sensor.
- While holding the SCAN button for IR measurement, press the MODE button repeatedly to cycle through MAX, MIN, and AVG readings.
Backlight
The display features a backlight for improved visibility in low-light conditions. The backlight automatically activates when the probe is unfolded or a button is pressed.
Auto-Off Function
To conserve battery life, the thermometer will automatically turn off after 90 seconds of inactivity (no button presses or probe movement).

Maintenance
- Cleaning the Probe: Wipe the stainless steel probe with a damp cloth or mild soapy water after each use. Do not immerse the entire thermometer in water.
- Cleaning the Body: Clean the body of the thermometer with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse in water.
- Storage: Store the thermometer in a dry place at room temperature. Fold the probe back into the device for compact storage and to activate the auto-off feature. The built-in magnet allows for convenient storage on metallic surfaces.
- Battery Care: Remove batteries if the device is not going to be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
