4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation
The Digital Multimeter and NCV Tester require batteries for operation. The Outlet Tester is powered directly by the outlet.
- Digital Multimeter (HT113B): Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter. Insert the required batteries (typically 2x AAA, refer to the compartment for exact type and polarity). Securely close the cover.
- Non-Contact Voltage Tester: Twist the cap at the end of the NCV tester to open the battery compartment. Insert the required batteries (typically 2x AAA, refer to the compartment for exact type and polarity). Replace the cap, ensuring it is tightly secured.
4.2. Connecting Multimeter Test Leads
For the HT113B Digital Multimeter, connect the test leads as follows:
- Insert the red test lead into the VΩmA input jack for voltage, resistance, and low current measurements.
- Insert the black test lead into the COM (common) input jack.
- For high current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the 10A input jack.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Using the Digital Multimeter (HT113B)
Turn the rotary dial to the desired measurement function. Ensure test leads are connected correctly for the selected function.
- AC/DC Voltage Measurement:
- Set the rotary dial to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage) range.
- Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the display.
- AC/DC Current Measurement:
- Important: Disconnect power to the circuit before connecting the multimeter in series.
- Set the rotary dial to the A~ (AC Current) or A- (DC Current) range. For currents above 400mA, ensure the red lead is in the 10A jack.
- Connect the multimeter in series with the circuit.
- Apply power and read the current value.
- Resistance Measurement:
- Important: Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Set the rotary dial to the Ω (Resistance) range.
- Connect the test leads across the component to be measured.
- Read the resistance value.
- Continuity Test:
- Set the rotary dial to the Continuity (buzzer icon) range.
- Touch the test leads to the two points of the circuit. An audible beep indicates continuity.
- Diode Test:
- Set the rotary dial to the Diode (diode symbol) range.
- Connect the red lead to the anode and the black lead to the cathode of the diode. Read the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads to check for open circuit.
- Battery Test (1.5V / 9V):
- Set the rotary dial to the 1.5V or 9V battery test range.
- Connect the red lead to the positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal of the battery.
- Read the battery voltage on the display.

5.2. Using the Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Tester
The NCV tester is used to quickly detect the presence of AC voltage without making physical contact with conductors.
- Turn on the NCV tester.
- Place the tip of the tester near the wire, outlet, or terminal strip you wish to test.
- If AC voltage is present, the tester will emit an audible beep and its tip will glow red.
- To use the flashlight, long press the "S" button.
- For breakpoint testing, move the tester along the insulated wire. The indication will stop at the point of the break.

Figure 5.5: NCV tester indicating high AC voltage.
5.3. Using the Electrical Outlet Tester / GFCI Tester
This tester is designed for quick and easy diagnosis of common wiring faults in 3-wire 110-125V AC outlets.
- Plug the outlet tester into the receptacle you wish to test.
- Observe the LED light pattern on the tester. Refer to the diagnostic chart on the tester's label or in Section 3.4 for interpretation.
- GFCI Test: For GFCI outlets, press the "Press for GFCI Test" button. A working GFCI outlet should trip, cutting power to the outlet. Reset the GFCI outlet after testing. If the GFCI does not trip, it indicates a fault and the outlet should be serviced by a qualified electrician.

6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the tools with a dry, clean cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears on the multimeter or NCV tester. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.
- Fuse Replacement (HT113B Multimeter): If the multimeter fails to measure current, the fuse may be blown. Disconnect test leads and power off the device. Open the back cover, locate the fuse, and replace it with a fuse of the same type and rating (e.g., 10A).
- Storage: Store the tools in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove batteries to prevent leakage.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Multimeter does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity and replace batteries. |
| Multimeter shows "OL" (Overload) or incorrect reading. | Measurement range too low; input exceeds maximum rating; blown fuse (for current). | Select a higher range; ensure input is within limits; check and replace fuse if measuring current. |
| NCV tester does not detect voltage. | Dead batteries; no voltage present; low sensitivity mode. | Replace batteries; confirm voltage presence with another tool; switch to high sensitivity mode. |
| Outlet tester shows incorrect wiring. | Actual wiring fault; loose connection in outlet. | Consult a qualified electrician to inspect and correct wiring. |
| GFCI outlet does not trip during test. | Faulty GFCI outlet; no ground connection. | The GFCI outlet is faulty and needs replacement or repair by a qualified electrician. |
