2. Safety Instructions

Always follow basic safety precautions when using power tools and accessories to reduce the risk of personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury.

  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields, and hearing protection. Gloves are recommended for handling sharp tools.
  • Secure Workpiece: Ensure the material being drilled is securely clamped or held to prevent movement during operation.
  • Use Correct Speed: Operate your drill at appropriate speeds for the material and hole saw size. Slower speeds are generally recommended for larger hole saws and harder materials.
  • Apply Steady Pressure: Do not force the hole saw. Apply steady, even pressure.
  • Coolant Use: For metal drilling, especially stainless steel, use a cutting fluid or coolant to extend tool life and improve cutting performance.
  • Material Thickness: Do not exceed the recommended material thickness of 3mm for metal drilling.
  • Clear Debris: Always disconnect the drill from the power source before attempting to remove debris or clear the hole saw.
  • Inspect Tools: Before each use, inspect the hole saw and arbor for damage or wear. Do not use damaged tools.

5. Setup and Assembly

Follow these steps to correctly assemble the hole saw with the appropriate arbor and adapter.

  1. Select Hole Saw: Choose the desired hole saw diameter for your application.
  2. Select Arbor:
    • For hole saws smaller than 32mm in diameter, use the 9.53mm arbor.
    • For hole saws 32mm and larger in diameter, use the 11.1mm arbor.
    • The 9.53mm arbor can also be used for hole saws 32mm and larger when combined with the provided adapter.
  3. Assemble Arbor: Insert the pilot drill bit into the arbor and secure it with the set screw.
  4. Attach Hole Saw: Thread the selected hole saw onto the arbor until it is hand-tight. Ensure the hole saw is fully seated against the arbor's flange.
  5. Use Adapter (if needed): If using the 9.53mm arbor with a hole saw 32mm or larger, first attach the adapter to the arbor, then thread the hole saw onto the adapter.
  6. Secure in Drill: Insert the arbor shank into your drill chuck and tighten securely.

6. Operating Instructions

This hole saw set is designed for creating clean, precise holes in various materials. Always refer to the safety instructions before operation.

6.1 Compatible Materials

The WORKPRO HSS Bi-Metal Hole Saws are suitable for drilling:

  • Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Aluminum Sheet
  • Copper
  • Wood

Important: The thickness of metal material should not exceed 3mm.

6.2 Recommended Equipment

Use with appropriate drilling machines:

  • Pistol Drill (Corded or Cordless)
  • Bench Drill (Drill Press)
Diagram showing compatible materials like steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and wood, with a warning that metal thickness should not exceed 3mm. Also shows recommended equipment: bench drill and pistol drill.

Figure 5: Overview of materials suitable for drilling and recommended drill types.

6.3 Drilling Procedure

  1. Prepare Workpiece: Mark the center of the desired hole. Secure the workpiece firmly to prevent rotation or movement during drilling.
  2. Set Drill Speed: Adjust your drill to a suitable speed. Generally, slower speeds are better for larger hole saws and harder materials.
  3. Start Drilling: Position the pilot drill bit on the marked center. Start the drill and apply light, steady pressure. The pilot drill will guide the hole saw.
  4. Continue Drilling: Once the hole saw teeth engage the material, maintain steady pressure. For metal, use cutting fluid to reduce heat and friction.
  5. Clear Chips: Periodically withdraw the hole saw to clear chips and allow cooling, especially when drilling deep holes or hard materials.
  6. Complete Hole: Continue until the hole is fully cut.
  7. Remove Slug: After drilling, disconnect the drill from power. Use a screwdriver or similar tool through the side slots to pry out the cut material slug from the hole saw.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the hole saws and arbors to remove any debris, metal chips, or wood dust. Use a brush or compressed air.
  • Lubrication: For metal drilling, ensure adequate lubrication during use. After cleaning, a light coat of oil can help prevent rust, especially on the teeth.
  • Storage: Store the hole saw set in its original aluminum alloy case in a dry environment to protect it from moisture and damage.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the teeth for wear or damage. Dull or damaged hole saws should be replaced to ensure optimal performance and safety.

8. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter during operation.

  • Hole Saw Not Cutting Effectively:
    • Ensure the hole saw is securely attached to the arbor.
    • Check if the teeth are dull or damaged; replace if necessary.
    • Verify you are using the correct drill speed for the material.
    • Apply sufficient, steady pressure.
    • For metal, ensure cutting fluid is being used.
  • Excessive Heat/Smoke:
    • Reduce drill speed.
    • Apply cutting fluid for metal.
    • Clear chips frequently to prevent buildup.
    • Ensure the material thickness does not exceed 3mm for metal.
  • Hole Saw Getting Stuck:
    • Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped.
    • Do not apply excessive force.
    • Check for material binding; withdraw and re-enter carefully.
