3. Setup

3.1 Filling the Water Tank

  1. Ensure the steamer is unplugged from the electrical outlet.
  2. Detach the water tank from the main unit. The tank has a capacity of 7.3 ounces.
  3. Open the rubber stopper on the water tank.
  4. Fill the tank with distilled water. Using distilled water helps prevent mineral buildup and prolongs the life of the steamer. Do not use tap water.
  5. Close the rubber stopper securely and reattach the water tank to the steamer unit until it clicks into place.

3.2 Power Connection

  1. Plug the steamer into a standard 120V AC electrical outlet.
  2. Turn on the steamer using the designated power button. The indicator light will illuminate, typically red, indicating it is heating up.
  3. Wait approximately 40 seconds for the steamer to heat up. The indicator light will change color (e.g., to green or solid blue) when it is ready for use.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Selecting Steam Settings

Your steamer offers multiple steam settings to accommodate various fabric types:

  • Low: For delicate fabrics.
  • Mid: For light to medium fabrics.
  • High: For heavier fabrics and stubborn wrinkles.
  • Turbo: Provides maximum steam power for quick results and deep penetration.

Adjust the setting using the control buttons on the handle once the steamer is ready.

4.2 Steaming Technique

  1. Hang the garment on a hanger.
  2. Hold the steamer upright, ensuring the steam plate is facing the fabric.
  3. Press the steam trigger to release steam.
  4. Use short, slow strokes, moving the steamer over the wrinkled areas. For best results, hold the fabric taut with your free hand (use a heat-protective mitt if necessary).
  5. For stubborn wrinkles, use the Turbo setting and apply gentle pressure with the aluminum steamer plate directly onto the fabric.

4.3 Safety Guidelines (Do's and Don'ts)

  • DO: Test the steamer on an inconspicuous area of the garment using the lowest steam setting.
  • DO: Use short, slow strokes to remove stubborn wrinkles.
  • DO: Hold fabric taut for best results. Use a heat protective mitt to protect hands.
  • DO NOT: Touch the steam head or hold your hand in front of it while it's hot.
  • DO NOT: Leave water in the reservoir when not in use.
  • DO NOT: Point the steam at any person or pet or steam clothes that someone is wearing.
  • DO NOT: Use a garment steamer designed for use in the US (120V power) in another country without a proper voltage converter.

The Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Garment Steamer comes with a versatile 3-in-1 attachment to enhance your steaming experience:

Figure 5: Components of the 3-in-1 attachment: silicone band, bristle brush, and delicate fabric spacer.

  • Silicone Band: Use this to pull fabric taut, creating a smooth surface for easier and more effective steaming, similar to an ironing board.
  • Delicate Fabric Spacer: This attachment provides a protective layer between the steam plate and fragile fabrics or trims, preventing damage while still allowing steam to penetrate.
  • Bristle Brush: Ideal for heavier fabrics like coats or upholstery. The bristles help to open up the fabric weave, allowing steam to reach deeper and effectively remove wrinkles.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning and Storage

  • Always unplug the steamer and allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
  • Empty any remaining water from the tank after each use to prevent mineral buildup.
  • Wipe the exterior of the steamer with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Store the steamer in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

6.2 Descaling (if necessary)

If you notice reduced steam output or mineral residue, descaling may be necessary. Consult the manufacturer's website or customer support for specific descaling instructions.

7. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • No Steam or Clicking Noise: If the steamer is clicking but not producing steam, it may be due to air bubbles in the water reservoir. Gently shake the steamer or tilt it to dislodge any trapped air bubbles. Ensure the water tank is properly seated and filled.
  • Water Spitting: This can occur if the steamer is not fully heated or if there is too much water in the steam chamber. Ensure the steamer has fully heated up (indicator light is ready) before use.
  • Reduced Steam Output: Mineral buildup can restrict steam flow. Ensure you are using distilled water. If the issue persists, descaling may be required (refer to Maintenance section).
