4. Product Overview
The iGaging EZ-VIEW PLUS DRO system consists of two primary components: the digital display unit and the aluminum scale rule. These components work together to provide accurate linear measurements.

Figure 1: iGaging EZ-VIEW PLUS Digital Readout (DRO) system. This image displays the main components: the digital display unit with its large LCD screen and control buttons, the magnetic remote display connected by a long cable, and the 24-inch aluminum scale rule with its reading head. The display unit is shown mounted on a bracket, and the scale rule is positioned below it, ready for installation on a machine.
4.1 Display Unit Features
- X-Large LCD Display: Provides clear readings in inch, decimal, fractional, and metric units.
- Buttons:
- mm/in/F: Toggles between millimeters, inches (decimal), and inches (fractional).
- Hold: Freezes the current reading on the display.
- SET: Used for setting preset values.
- Preset: Activates the preset function.
- Power (⏻): Turns the unit on or off.
- ZERO: Sets the current position to zero.
- Magnetic Remote Display: Allows flexible positioning of the display unit for optimal viewing.
- Data Output Port: For connecting to external data collection systems (cable sold separately).
- AC Power Port: For optional external power supply (adapter sold separately).
4.2 Digital Scale Rule
- Material: Industrial-grade aluminum, designed for durability.
- Length: 24 inches (can be cut to fit specific applications).
- Reading Head: Moves along the rule to detect position and transmit data to the display.
5. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for accurate measurements. The DRO can be mounted in vertical, horizontal, or any desired position.
5.1 Mounting the Digital Scale Rule
- Determine Mounting Location: Identify a flat, stable surface on your machine tool where the scale rule can be mounted parallel to the axis of movement you wish to measure. Ensure the full 24-inch travel range is accommodated.
- Prepare Surface: Clean the mounting surface thoroughly to remove any debris, oil, or dust.
- Position Brackets: Use the provided mounting brackets to secure the ends of the aluminum rule. Mark the drilling locations.
- Drill and Secure: Drill pilot holes and attach the brackets using appropriate fasteners (not included). Ensure the rule is straight and parallel to the machine's travel path.
- Attach Reading Head: Secure the reading head of the scale to the moving part of your machine tool. Ensure it slides smoothly along the rule without binding or excessive play.
- Cutting the Rule (Optional): If the 24-inch rule is too long for your application, it can be carefully cut to the desired length using appropriate metalworking tools. Ensure the cut is clean and perpendicular to the rule's length.
5.2 Mounting the Display Unit
- Choose Location: Select a convenient location for the magnetic remote display unit, ensuring the 76-inch cord can reach the scale's reading head. The magnetic back allows for easy attachment to ferrous surfaces.
- Connect Cables:
- Connect the readout cable from the scale's reading head to the appropriate port on the display unit.
- If using an optional AC adapter, connect it to the AC power port.
- Insert Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the display unit and insert the required batteries (typically CR2032, check unit for specific type).
6. Operating Instructions
Familiarize yourself with the display unit's functions for accurate measurement.
6.1 Power On/Off
- Press the Power (⏻) button to turn the unit on.
- Press and hold the Power (⏻) button for a few seconds to turn the unit off. The unit will automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.
6.2 Changing Measurement Units
- Press the mm/in/F button to cycle through the available measurement units: millimeters (mm), inches (decimal), and inches (fractional).
- When in fractional inch mode, the resolution can be adjusted (e.g., 1/32, 1/64, 1/128) by repeatedly pressing the mm/in/F button while in fractional mode.
6.3 Setting Zero
- Move the reading head to the desired starting position.
- Press the ZERO button. The display will reset to 0.000, establishing a new reference point for subsequent measurements. This is known as the "floating zero" function.
6.4 Using the Preset Function
The preset function allows you to set a specific value at any point on the scale.
- Move the reading head to the position where you want to set a preset value.
- Press the SET button. The display will flash.
- Use the mm/in/F and Hold buttons to adjust the numerical value. The mm/in/F button typically increments the digit, and the Hold button moves to the next digit.
- Once the desired value is entered, press the Preset button to confirm and apply the preset value.
6.5 Hold Function
- Press the Hold button to freeze the current measurement on the display. This is useful for recording readings in difficult-to-view positions.
- Press the Hold button again to release the display and resume live measurement.
7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the accuracy and longevity of your DRO system.
7.1 Cleaning
- Wipe the digital scale rule and display unit with a soft, dry cloth.
- For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, then dry thoroughly.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the surfaces and electronic components.
- Keep the scale's reading head free from dust and debris to ensure smooth operation and accurate readings.
7.2 Battery Replacement
- When the display becomes dim or erratic, it is time to replace the battery.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the display unit.
- Open the compartment, remove the old battery, and insert a new CR2032 (or specified type) battery with the correct polarity.
- Close the battery compartment securely.
7.3 Storage
- Store the DRO system in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
- Avoid storing in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations or high humidity.
8. Troubleshooting
Refer to the following table for common issues and their solutions.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Display is blank or dim. | Low battery; unit is off; loose cable connection. | Replace battery; press power button; check cable connection between scale and display. |
| Inaccurate or erratic readings. | Dirt/debris on scale; loose mounting; electromagnetic interference (EMI); damaged scale/reading head. | Clean scale thoroughly; tighten mounting screws; relocate unit away from strong electrical fields; inspect scale for damage. |
| Reading head does not move smoothly. | Obstruction; bent scale; improper alignment. | Remove any obstructions; check scale for damage; re-align mounting. |
| Unit does not respond to button presses. | Frozen display; low battery; internal malfunction. | Try pressing "Hold" to unfreeze; replace battery; contact customer support if problem persists. |
