Setup and Initial Adjustment
Setting the Time and Date
- Unscrew the Crown: Locate the crown on the right side of the watch case. Rotate the crown counter-clockwise until it is unscrewed and pops out slightly.
- First Click (Date/Day Adjustment): Gently pull the crown out to the first click position.
- Rotate the crown clockwise to adjust the date.
- Rotate the crown counter-clockwise to adjust the day of the week.
- Adjust the date and day to the previous day, as you will advance them to the current day when setting the time.
- Second Click (Time Adjustment): Pull the crown out further to the second click position. The second hand will stop.
- Rotate the crown to set the time. Advance the hands past 12 o'clock to ensure the AM/PM is correctly set (the date will change if you pass midnight).
- Set the time to the current time.
- Secure the Crown: Once the time and date are set, push the crown back in fully while gently rotating it clockwise to screw it back into the case. This ensures water resistance.
Operating Your Watch
Automatic Movement
The Citizen Promaster NY0040-09EE is powered by an automatic mechanical movement. This means it is wound by the motion of your wrist. When worn regularly, the watch will maintain its power reserve. If the watch stops due to lack of motion, it can be restarted by gently shaking it side-to-side for about 30 seconds or by manually winding it by rotating the crown clockwise while it is in the fully pushed-in and screwed-down position (approximately 40 rotations).
Unidirectional Rotating Bezel
The watch features a unidirectional rotating bezel with a minute scale. This bezel is designed to rotate only counter-clockwise to prevent accidental increases in dive time. To use it:
- Align the bezel's zero marker with the minute hand at the start of your dive or timed event.
- As time passes, the minute hand will indicate the elapsed time on the bezel's scale.
This feature is useful for timing events up to 60 minutes.
Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: Wipe the watch regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth and mild soap, then rinse thoroughly with fresh water (ensure crown is screwed down) and dry.
- Water Resistance: This watch is rated for 200m (20 ATM) water resistance, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not for saturation diving. Always ensure the crown is fully screwed down before exposing the watch to water. After exposure to saltwater, rinse the watch with fresh water to prevent corrosion.
- Temperature Extremes: Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperatures or sudden temperature changes, as this can affect the movement and seals.
- Magnetic Fields: Keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields (e.g., speakers, refrigerators, mobile phones), as magnetism can affect the accuracy of the mechanical movement.
- Servicing: For optimal performance and longevity, it is recommended to have your watch serviced by an authorized Citizen service center every 3-5 years.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Watch has stopped or is running intermittently. | Insufficient power reserve. | Wear the watch regularly for at least 8 hours a day, or manually wind it by rotating the crown clockwise (screwed-down position) about 40 times. |
| Time is inaccurate. | Exposure to strong magnetic fields; needs regulation; low power reserve. | Demagnetize the watch (professional service recommended); ensure sufficient power reserve; if problem persists, seek professional service. |
| Date/Day does not change at midnight. | Time is set to AM instead of PM, or vice versa. | Advance the time by 12 hours. Ensure the date changes when passing midnight. |
| Crown cannot be screwed down. | Misaligned threads or debris. | Gently push in and rotate clockwise. Do not force. If resistance continues, seek professional service to avoid damage to water resistance. |
