Please read and comply with the instructions listed on this document. To get the best service life and performance from your opener, clean it thoroughly before and after each use by following the instructions listed below. Minimize the use of alkaline cleaners as they may dull the finish and cause pitting.
ABOUT
The Garde Heavy-Duty #10 Can Opener is made of durable cast iron construction with a rust-resistant coating. It can be used to open cans of all sizes, including #10 cans.
USING YOUR NEW CAN OPENER
- Position the can you are opening on the counter on top of the base with the lip of the can touching the can opener.
- Line up the knife on the inside lip of the can. With the handle upright, punch down so the knife punctures the can’s lid.
- Push the handle down so it is parallel with the counter and begin turning the handle to open the can.
- Once the lid is separated, safely remove it from the can. Avoid touching the sharp edges of the lid created while opening the can.
- Pull the can opener up and move the can away from the opener.
MAINTENANCE
- Check the Blade: Carefully run your fingernail along the blade edges to feel for any nicks or grooves. If you find one, flip the blade to use the other edge or replace both the blade and the gear. Not doing this could cause metal shavings during use.
- Check the Gear: Open a #10 can and look at the outer lip of the can. If the groove marks from the gear are wide or uneven, the gear might be slipping. This could cause metal shavings from the can. If this happens, replace the gear and blade.
- Check for Rust or Wear: Look over the can opener for any rust or signs of heavy wear. If you see either, replace the can opener.
- Inspection Frequency: Inspect the can opener weekly, or more often depending on how frequently it’s used.
- Do Not Sharpen the Blade: The blade is purposely dull to avoid creating metal shavings during use. If the can opener isn’t cutting properly or creating metal shavings, replace the blade and gear.
CLEANING
USE CAUTION WHEN CLEANING
- The can opener’s surface should be cleaned regularly using a food-safe sanitizer.
Recommended: Noble Chemical QuikSan (147QUIKSAN). - Use a toothbrush-style brush to ensure you are able to reach the crevices around the knife.
Recommended: Carlisle Utility Brush (2714067500). - After cleaning, apply a food-safe oil to the gear to keep it turning smoothly.
Recommended: Petrol-Gel Sanitary Lubricant (401PETROGEL).
It is recommended the knife and gear are replaced at the same time for optimal performance.
REPLACING THE KNIFE (181CO1KNIFMA)
- Using either a Phillips or flat head screwdriver, remove the 2 screws that connect the knife to the opener.
- Remove and discard the old knife while keeping the knife support plate.
- Position the new knife in line with the holes and place the support plate on top of the knife.
- Use the screwdriver to tighten the screws.
REPLACING THE GEAR (181CO1GEARMA)
- Insert the can opener into the base. The base will be needed for leverage while removing the gear.
- Use a flat head screwdriver to hold the gear in place by jamming the head of the screwdriver into the teeth of the old gear. You will need to apply enough pressure to hold the gear in place.
- With the screwdriver in place, begin turning the handle counterclockwise. You should feel the tension in the spring ease up and the gear will come loose after a few turns.
- Remove the old gear and keep the washer. Insert the new gear with the washer on top. Turn the handle clockwise until the handle connects to the shaft below the gear. The spring should be tense now and the can opener is ready to use.
