Procedure Overview
This guide covers the following primary tasks:
- Unpack and Setup
- First Boot
- Install Expansion Cards
- Install Operating System
- Install Applications
- Create a Backup With SEL BaRT
- Long-Term Storage
Unpack and Setup
Verify that the correct number and type of power supplies are installed.
Step 1: Connect the keyboard and mouse to any of the USB ports.
Step 2: Connect the monitor(s) to the video ports (DVI-D or DisplayPort).
Step 3: Connect an Ethernet cable to either ETH1 or ETH2 for network access. The LEDs indicate link and activity.
Step 4: Connect to serial ports COM 1 or COM 2 if needed. These ports support various data rates and parity settings.
Step 5: Connect wires to the compression terminal block for the Alarm contact using a 1/8-inch slotted screwdriver. The contact can be wired normally closed or normally open.
Step 6: Power the SEL-3355-2 using a single or dual redundant power supply. Check the power supply labeling for rated input voltage.
Step 7: Wire the power cable to the compression terminal block using a 1/8-inch slotted screwdriver.
Step 8: Attach the compression terminal block to the power supply. Disconnecting this block will disconnect power.
First Boot
For SEL-3355-2 With Microsoft Windows
Upon initial startup, configure the operating system, including creating a user account and password. Verify that all SATA drives are installed and correctly configured, and that all hardware and software packages are installed.
Hard Drive(s) Verification:
- Click the Start button, type 'partition', and select 'Create and format hard disk partitions'.
- In Disk Management, verify that a disk is listed for each SATA drive ordered with the system.
- If drives are not displayed, open the SATA drive bay on the front panel and verify installation.
- If drives are installed but not displayed, turn off the computer, pull out and reinstall each drive one at a time, then restore power and verify again.
- If drives are still not present, contact customer service.
Hardware Verification:
- Click the Start button, type 'device', and select 'Device Manager'.
- In Device Manager, check for missing device drivers (e.g., under 'Other devices' or 'Unknown device'). Install drivers from the Literature and Software DVD if necessary.
- Verify the number of serial and Ethernet ports by checking 'Network adapters' and 'Ports (COM & LPT)'.
Software Verification:
- Click the Start button, type 'programs and features', and select 'Programs and Features'.
- Verify that all ordered software packages are listed.
For an SEL-3355-2 With No Operating System
If no bootable operating system is installed, the system boots to an EFI Shell.
SATA Drive Verification (No OS):
- Restart the SEL-3355-2 and press F2 to enter BIOS setup.
- In System Configuration, select 'SATA Configuration' and verify that SATA drives are listed in Slots 1-4.
- If drives are not listed, follow steps 4-6 from the 'Hard Drive(s) Verification' section above.
Install Expansion Cards
The SEL-3355-2 supports PCI Express (PCIe) and legacy PCI cards.
- Remove power and the top cover of the SEL-3355-2.
- Remove the cover plate from the desired expansion slot.
- Ensure the expansion card is completely inserted into the slot before securing it with the retaining screw.
- Replace the top cover.
Refer to the expansion card's documentation for specific software or driver installation instructions.
Install Operating System
To install an operating system from a DVD:
- Attach an external DVD-ROM drive to a USB port.
- Insert the installation DVD and start/restart the SEL-3355-2. The system should boot from the DVD automatically.
- If the system does not boot from the DVD, restart and press F5 to load the Boot Menu. Select the DVD-ROM drive and press Enter.
Note: If the DVD-ROM drive is not listed or does not boot, it may be incompatible or the DVD may not be bootable.
After OS installation, install SEL System Monitor (SysMon) and SEL drivers from the Literature and Software DVD.
Install Applications
For additional applications, use an external USB DVD-ROM drive or a USB drive for file transfer. Ensure the system is protected from malware by scanning USB drives with antivirus software.
Create a Backup With SEL BaRT
It is recommended to create a backup of the configured SEL-3355-2 using the SEL Backup and Recovery Tool (SEL BaRT), included on the Literature and Software DVD. SEL BaRT allows for disk backups to be stored on a USB storage device.
Long-Term Storage
The SEL-3355-2 has a battery for its real-time clock. If the unit is stored for over a year without power, the battery may deplete and should be replaced.
