WAGNER Coating Technology for XXXL Chairs
Wiehag Chooses Flexible Coating System for Chair Production
October 2015
The XXXL Chairs
The red chairs of XXXL furniture stores are widely recognized from TV commercials. The world's largest chair, as confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records, is 30 meters tall and stands in St. Florian near Linz. It was manufactured by Wiehag and painted with a wet coating system from WAGNER. Furniture chain XXXLutz chose Wiehag GmbH in Altheim (Upper Austria) above all for its short delivery times and excellent product quality. Wiehag builds large-span bearing systems and complete roofs as well as roof, ceiling, and wall elements. One of its projects for example is the wooden roof construction on the new London Crossrail train station in Canary Wharf.

The Challenge of Timber Quality and Coating Type
During production of the chairs, the height of up to 30 meters is no problem for Wiehag. "Wiehag is used to building large timber structures. The biggest challenge with the XXXL chairs was selecting the wood quality and the coating," reports Manfred Haimerl, Plant Manager at Wiehag. In the end, Wiehag used 70 cubic meters of laminated Douglas fir timber for the chair for the furniture store in St. Florian. The chair was coated using 140 liters of highly weatherproof paint and the WAGNER Puma 28-40 Airless Spraypack high-pressure piston pump with high-pressure filter and suction system as well as a WAGNER AG 14 Airless Gun. The result was a durable coating which was able to withstand the weather conditions for a long period of time.

Coating System for a Broad Application Range
Wiehag uses the flexible coating technology from WAGNER not only for the XXXL chairs, but also for other coating jobs. The Puma 28-40 Airless Spraypack piston pump is made of stainless steel and is able to process both solvents and water-based paints in airless or AirCoat procedures. In addition, the system can be started, operated, and refilled with ease. Rinsing and cleaning are also quick and easy: The design is dimensioned so that there is almost no clearance volume inside the pump. Altogether, the system is extremely compact and suitable for an especially wide range of applications.
WAGNER Wins Over Wiehag with Test Coating
Karl Rappersberger, Sales Technician at WAGNER for the Vienna, Lower Austria, and Upper Austria region, remarked: "Wiehag was searching for a system capable of efficiently coating large and long wooden parts inside the hall. Based on our experience, we were able to put a system together, and carried out a test coating at the customer site. Wiehag was very happy with the result." Meanwhile, Wiehag has three systems from WAGNER in operation. However, the company only uses system No. 1 for the XXXL chairs. That also goes for the latest chair: In May 2015, Wiehag finished the 20-meter-high model for the XXXL furniture store in Kapfenberg (Styria).
