MM540 Installation Steps

The installation process is divided into five main steps:

  1. STEP 1: Attach Braces to TV (Page 5)
  2. STEP 2: Determine Wall Placement (Page 8)
  3. STEP 3: Attach Mount to Wall (Page 12)
  4. STEP 4: Attach TV to Mount (Page 14)
  5. STEP 5: Make Final Adjustments (Page 17)

STEP 1: Attach Braces to TV

1.1 Test-fit Brace components on back of TV. Place TV screen-side down on a flat, blanketed surface. Lay out components to check assembly configuration. If installing a sound bar, refer to STEP 1.8.

1.2 Determine if TV has a flat or irregular back. An irregular back will require Spacers {12} and longer Screws to fill spaces between the Vertical Brace {31} and the TV. The Braces must be parallel to the television screen.

1.3 Select Screws and Spacers. If Spacers {12} are required, choose one of the Screw combinations shown with maximum Spacer usage for M5, M6, and M8 sizes.

1.4 Hand-thread screw combination into the TV. Ensure there is adequate thread engagement without hitting the bottom of the threaded insert. CAUTION: Do not use screws that are too long for the TV's threaded inserts because it may damage internal components!

1.5 Attach the Vertical Braces to the back of TV. Install the Vertical Braces {31} so that their bottoms are between 3" to 10" from the bottom of the TV, centering the braces vertically as much as possible. Note: Vertical Braces must always be installed higher than the bottom of the TV.

1.6 Optional: If the lower VESA holes are less than 3" from the bottom of the TV: Connect the Vertical Braces {31} through the UPPER VESA holes only. If attaching through a slot, hand-thread the screw, slide the brace upward until the screw meets the bottom of the slot, and then tighten. You must also attach Brace Extenders {30} as described in STEP 1.7.

1.7 Attach the Horizontal Brace to Brace Extenders. Slide one Brace Extender {30} onto each end of the Horizontal Brace {55}. Align the Brace Extenders with the Vertical Braces and attach the Horizontal Brace to the Brace Extenders using Screws {15}.

1.8 Optional: If installing a sound bar, attach the Sound Bar Wings. Use Screws {15} and Nuts {23} to attach the Sound Bar Wings {59} to the Horizontal Brace {55}. Position the Wings to fit the mounting holes of the sound bar. Arrange the wings and sound bar to work with the Heat-Sensing Center Handle {53}.

1.9 Attach Brace Extenders to the Vertical Braces. Slide the Brace Extenders {30} (with the Horizontal Brace {55} attached) onto the Vertical Braces {31}. Use Screws {18} and Nuts {23} to attach.

1.10 Attach Heat-Sensing Center Handle to Horizontal Brace. Attach the Center Handle {53} with Screws {15} to the Horizontal Brace {55}, ensuring it is within one inch from the bottom of the TV or sound bar.

ℹ️ Protect the TV with Heat-Sensing Center Handle. The handle turns red if the temperature above the fireplace exceeds 110°F. To effectively lower the TV using the Handle, follow the MantelMount Three-Step Pull Down Technique: 1. Stand in front of the mount, arms extended. 2. Grasp handles, lean back slightly. 3. Step backward to pull mount away from the wall while applying downward pressure.

STEP 2: Determine Wall Placement

2.1 Measure the distance from the bottom of the Vertical Braces {31} (not the extenders) to the bottom of the TV/sound bar.

2.2 Determine the minimum vertical position of the Wall Plate. Use the Look-up Table to find the minimum distance between the mantel and the bottom of the lower Wall Plate {32} based on mantel depth and the distance measured in STEP 2.1.

Note: Most customers want their TV mounted as close to the mantel as possible. If this describes you, go directly to STEP 2.4. However, if you want the TV higher on the wall (such as centered between the mantel and ceiling) e.g. for extra space on the mantel for pictures or a center speaker, continue to STEP 2.3.

2.3 Find the center of your mantel and the centers of two studs. Measure and mark the center line of the mantel onto the wall with tape. Use a stud finder to locate two studs. Poke a sharp awl or finish nail through the drywall to find stud edges and mark the center spots. Lag Bolts must be installed into the CENTER of the studs.

2.4 Determine the positioning of the Wall Plates. Position the LOWER SLOTS of the Template at the appropriate distance from the mantel. Use a level to orient the Template. Mark the center of the four slots along the marks for the centers of the studs. Orient a Wall Plate {32} to the LOWER hole markings (slots down) and then the UPPER holes (slots up). Ensure it centers over the mantel and reaches two studs without interfering with outlets.

2.5 Slide the Wall Plates sideways on the wall until they reach two studs. The Wall Plates {32} do not need to center-align with the Lifting Arm {35} or mantel, as the Lifting Arm can slide within them. Mark the center line of the wall onto the Wall Plates. Remember to correctly orient the Wall Plates as UPPER and LOWER.

B. If necessary, move Wall Plates to clear an outlet. If an outlet impedes installation, try moving the Wall Plates left or right, or up or down, ensuring the LOWER Wall Plate stays within the minimum and maximum distances. If moving plates up or down, adjust the Vertical Braces {31} on the TV by the same amount.

OPTIONAL: 1-Way Swivel Extender

MantelMount MM540 swivels 30° left and 30° right. For situations requiring more swivel to one side (e.g., corner mounting), the optional One-Way Swivel Kit provides 60° of swivel in one direction only. This is recommended only for installations not above a mantel. Note: Auto-Straightening does not work with this kit.

Optional Step: Install the One-Way Swivel Kit.

A. Remove the Swivel TV Plate {34} from the Lifting Arm {35}.

B. Install both Side Swivel Plates {56} onto the Lift Arm, nesting them underneath the existing tabs. Install Screws {36} in the center hole of each plate.

C. Re-attach the Swivel TV Plate {34} onto the desired side of the Side Swivel Plates {56}, reversing the removal order.

One-Way Swivel Kit Parts: {56} Side Swivel Plates, {36} Screws, {11} Washers, {25} Nuts.

STEP 3: Attach Mount to Wall

3.1 Attach Lifting Arm to Wall Plates. Attach the Lifting Arm {35} directly to the centers of the Wall Plates {32} (if from STEP 2.5), or align the center of the Lifting Arm to the marks on the Wall Plates (if from STEP 2.6/2.7). Install four bolts {14} through the Wall Plates into the Lifting Arm and tighten securely.

3.2 Verify positioning of the mount with stud(s). Align the mount to the LOWER marked spots and verify the UPPER hole markings. Fine tune if necessary.

ℹ️ If the Lifting Arm is blocking a Wall Plate hole you need to access: Move the Wall Plates {32} left or right, temporarily install with Lag Bolts {17}, pull the Lifting Arm {35} down to install the Safety Bolt {20}, then remove Lag Bolts and reinstall the mount.

3.3 Drill four pilot holes. Use a 7/32" drill bit to a depth of 2.5" (65mm). Wall covering (drywall) must not exceed 5/8" thickness.

3.4 Attach the Wall Plates and Lifting Arm onto the wall. Install Lag Bolts {17} and Washers {11} through the Wall Plate {32} holes into the center of the studs, using the pilot holes.

WARNING: Do not over-tighten Lag Bolts; tighten only until washers are firmly against the Wall Plate.

3.5 Insert Cable Tie Anchors into Lifting Arm. Insert two Cable Tie Anchors {22} into the front holes on the lower part of the Lifting Arm {35} and press firmly.

3.6 Use the included Cable Ties to attach cables. Ensure Cable Ties {24} form a gentle loop on the lower part of the Lifting Arm {35}. Cables must be long enough to accommodate the mount's movement.

3.7 Attach the TV Brace to the Lifting Arm. Hang the TV Brace {33} onto the Lifting Arm {35} and ensure it's level when tightening the four Leveling Screws {15}.

STEP 4: Attach TV to Mount

CAUTION: Do not damage or scratch the rods of the Gas Springs while performing these steps!

WARNING: Do not put hands into Lifting Arm without the Safety Bolt and Safety Nut installed. The force of the Lifting Arm can cause bodily injury!

4.1 Insert the Safety Bolt and Safety Nut. Use body weight to pull down the TV Brace {33} until the Lifting Arm {35} is horizontal. A second person must insert the Safety Bolt {20} through the Safety Hole in the base of the Lifting Arm and install the Safety Nut {27}. Slowly release the TV Brace until the Lifting Arm rests against the Safety Bolt.

4.2 Carefully hang the TV on the TV Brace. Ensure all hooks on the Vertical Braces {31} engage the TV Brace {33}. If the Lifting Arm {35} is too close to the mantel, remove the TV and adjust Bottom Stop positions (STEP 5.3). Do not allow the TV to drop far enough to hit the mantel.

4.3 Center and level the TV on the TV Brace. Align the center of the brace with the center of the TV before leveling. If the TV sags, slide it sideways up to 2 inches to level. If off-center, remove TV and relocate Wall Plates {32}. Refer to "TV Leveling" in Troubleshooting Tips for issues.

4.4 Attach the TV Brace to the Vertical Braces. Install four Screws {15} through the TV Brace {33} and into the Vertical Braces {31}.

4.5 Attach the electrical and signal cables to the TV. Give cables extra length so they are not stressed or kinked. Ensure cables do not get pinched within the Lifting Arm.

STEP 5: Make Final Adjustments

5.1 Adjust the Lifting Force for the TV. With Safety Bolt {20} in place, use a 10-14mm socket wrench to adjust the Tension Bolt {41} (inside the Lifting Arm {35}). For heavy TVs, turn clockwise to increase lifting force; counterclockwise for lighter TVs. Adjust until the TV gently stays in the lowered position and almost stays up against the Safety Bolt when released.

CAUTION: Do not adjust the Tension Bolt all the way to the bottom.

5.2 Adjust the Side Swivel Stop positions, if necessary. To prevent the TV from bumping the mantel or wall, loosen Locknuts {23} and adjust Swivel Stop Screws. Tighten Locknuts. If no swivel is desired, remove Locknuts.

5.3 Adjust the Bottom Stop positions and level the TV, if necessary. To prevent the TV from hitting the mantel or dropping too low, adjust Bottom Stop screws on each side of the Lifting Arm {35}. Loosen Locknuts {23}, adjust screws, and tighten Locknuts. Place a level on the TV; if not level in the DOWN position, adjust one bottom stop screw.

5.4 Remove the Safety Bolt and Safety Nut. Store these parts for future use. They are needed to remove the TV.

WARNING: Never release the handle before the TV mount is fully upright. Do not let it slam up! Always control the lifting process.

5.5 Verify the proper Lifting Performance (Force). The MantelMount is designed to hold the TV securely in the UP position and rest gently in the DOWN position. If adjustments are needed, reinsert the Safety Bolt and repeat STEP 5.1.

5.6 Make Post-Leveling adjustments, if necessary. Place a level on top of the TV in the UP position. If not level, loosen all four Leveling Screws {15}, rotate the TV until level, and tighten Screws.

5.7 Adjust the Vertical Tilt Position. Locate the two sliding knobs on the Tilt Mechanism on the Lifting Arm {35}. Loosen the knobs, position the TV to the desired tilt, and tighten the knobs.

5.8 Install the Wall Plate Covers. For wiring, use a Hole Saw drill bit to cut a hole through a Wall Cover {57}. Support the cover with scrap wood. Paint if desired. Snap onto Wall Plates {32}.

ISSUESOLUTION
The wall covering is made of brick or stone.Installation may be possible using concrete anchors with Lag Bolts {17} if the wall is structurally sound. Working with a concrete/masonry professional is recommended.
The drywall/stucco wall covering is thicker than 5/8".Please contact Customer Support for guidance before attempting installation.
A single wood stud is centered on my wall.Mounting to a single stud is possible with two Lag Bolts {17} through the center of the Wall Plates, provided the Lifting Arm is positioned in front of the stud. Alternatively, use the SSB40 Single Stud Adapter from MantelMount.com.

Mount Performance

ISSUESOLUTION (May require some trial and error to reach optimal performance.)
The Lifting Arm won't pull down in order to insert the Safety Bolt.It requires force to pull down the Lifting Arm when no TV is attached. Ensure the TV Brace {33} is attached. Pull the arm down by grasping the TV Brace, moving one foot back for leverage, straightening elbows, leaning back, and bending knees/elbows.
TV is difficult to pull down.Use the MantelMount Three-Step Pull-Down Technique: 1. Stand with arms extended. 2. Grasp handles, lean back slightly. 3. Step backward to pull mount away while applying downward pressure. If still difficult, make slight counterclockwise adjustments to Lifting Force (STEP 5.1).
TV is difficult to lift up.If easy to pull down, slightly tighten when in the UP position. Make minor clockwise adjustments to Lifting Force (STEP 5.1). If too easy to lift, it may become difficult to pull down. Balance is key.
The mount won't remain stationary anywhere along the route of travel.Adjust Lifting Force (STEP 5.1). TV size/weight, installation height, and mantel depth affect positioning. Ensure TV can comfortably pull down/lift up and stop at the optimal viewing height.
TV is not lowering the full vertical travel listed in the specifications. If TV can be pulled down/lifted but won't drop lower, remove Bottom Stop Screws (STEP 5.3). Proceed with caution, as this may cause the Lifting Arm to hit the mantel if the TV is above it.
