Specific Safety Instructions for Jump-Starters
WARNING: Burst hazard
- Do not use for charging dry-cell batteries; they may burst. Use only for charging/boosting lead-acid batteries.
- This unit is not intended to supply power to low-voltage electrical systems other than for starter-motor applications.
- Using unsupplied or unrecommended attachments may pose an electrical shock or injury risk.
WARNING: Risk of explosive gases
- Working near lead-acid batteries is dangerous due to explosive gases. Always read this manual and follow instructions exactly.
- Follow instructions from the battery and equipment manufacturers. Review cautionary markings.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk of injury or property damage:
- NEVER attempt to jump-start or charge a frozen battery.
- Vehicles with computerized systems may be damaged. Consult the vehicle's owner's manual before jump-starting.
- Never smoke or allow sparks/flames near the battery, engine, or power station.
- Perform jump-start procedures only in a safe, dry, well-ventilated area.
- Always store battery clamps when not in use. Never touch clamps together to prevent dangerous sparks, arcing, or explosion.
- When using the unit near the vehicle's battery and engine, place it on a flat, stable surface and keep clamps, cords, clothing, and body parts away from moving vehicle parts.
- Never allow red and black clamps to touch each other or any other common metal conductor to prevent damage or sparking/explosion hazards.
- For negative-grounded systems: Connect the POSITIVE (RED) clamp to the POSITIVE ungrounded battery post FIRST, then connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) clamp to the vehicle chassis or engine block away from the battery. Do not connect to the carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body parts. Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.
- For positive-grounded systems: Connect the NEGATIVE (BLACK) clamp to the NEGATIVE ungrounded battery post FIRST, then connect the POSITIVE (RED) clamp to the vehicle chassis or engine block away from the battery. Do not connect to the carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body parts. Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.
- If connections are incorrect, the Reverse Polarity Indicator (red light) will illuminate and an alarm will sound until clamps are disconnected. Disconnect and reconnect with correct polarity.
- Always disconnect the negative (Black) jumper cable first, followed by the positive (Red) jumper cable, except for positive grounded systems.
- Do not expose the battery to fire or intense heat, as it may explode. Protect exposed terminals with heavy-duty electrical tape before disposal to prevent shorting.
- Place the unit as far from the battery as cables permit.
- Never allow battery acid to contact the unit.
- Do not operate in a closed area or restrict ventilation.
- This system is designed for 12 Volt DC battery systems ONLY. Do not connect to 6V or 24V systems.
- This system is not a replacement for a vehicle battery. Do not attempt to operate a vehicle without a battery installed.
- Excessive engine cranking can damage the starter motor. If the engine fails to start after recommended attempts, discontinue procedures and investigate other problems.
- Do not use this jump-starter on watercraft; it is not qualified for marine applications.
- Keep the unit upright during storage, use, and recharging to avoid damage and shorten working life. Protect from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture.
First Aid
- Ensure immediate assistance is available when working with lead-acid batteries.
- Always wear protective eyewear. Battery acid contact can cause blindness or severe burns. Be aware of first aid procedures.
- Keep plenty of fresh water and soap nearby for skin contact.
- Remove personal metal items (rings, bracelets, watches) as a short circuit can cause severe burns.
- Do not wear vinyl clothing when jump-starting, as friction can cause static-electrical sparks.
- Skin Contact: If battery acid contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and water for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical attention if redness, pain, or irritation occurs.
- Eye Contact: If battery acid contacts eyes, flush immediately with water for at least 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention.
Charging / Recharging
Lead-acid batteries require routine maintenance for full charge and long life. They lose energy from self-discharge, especially at higher temperatures. Periodic charging is necessary. If the unit is not used frequently, recharge at least every 30 days.
Notes: Unit is delivered partially charged. Fully charge for 24 hours before first use. Recharging after each use prolongs battery life. Frequent heavy discharges or overcharging will reduce battery life. Use the built-in 120 Volt AC Charger.
Ensure all other unit functions are turned OFF during recharging to avoid slowing the process.
If the battery is overly discharged and the green LED lights when the charger is plugged in, it indicates a high impedance stage. Recharge for 24-48 hours before use.
CAUTION - Risk of property damage: Failure to keep the battery charged will cause permanent damage and result in poor jump-starting performance.
Charging/Recharging Using the 120 Volt AC Charger and a Standard Household Extension Cord (not included)
- Lift the AC adapter cover on the back of the unit and connect an extension cord. Plug the other end into a standard 120-volt AC wall outlet.
- Charge until the green Battery Status LED Indicator lights solid or flashes.
- Disconnect the extension cord and press the battery status button. If all 3 status lights illuminate, the unit is fully charged.
The unit cannot be overcharged using the AC method.
Jump-Starter Operation
The Jump-Starter is equipped with a Jump-Starter Power Switch. Once connections are properly made, turn the switch ON to jump-start the vehicle.
- Turn off the vehicle ignition and all accessories (radio, A/C, lights, phone chargers, etc.). Place the vehicle in "Park" and set the emergency brake.
- Ensure the Jump-Starter Power Switch is turned OFF.
- Remove jumper clamps from clamp tabs. Connect the red clamp first, then the black clamp.
- Procedure for jump-starting a NEGATIVE GROUNDED SYSTEM (most common):
- Connect the positive (+) red clamp to the vehicle battery's positive terminal.
- Connect the negative (-) black clamp to the vehicle chassis or a solid, non-moving, metal vehicle component or body part. Never clamp directly to the negative battery terminal or a moving part. Refer to the automobile owner's manual.
- Procedure for jump-starting POSITIVE GROUND SYSTEMS (rare):
- Connect the negative (-) black clamp to the vehicle battery's negative terminal.
- Connect the positive (+) red clamp to the vehicle chassis or a solid, non-moving, metal vehicle component or body part. Never clamp directly to the positive battery terminal or a moving part. Refer to the automobile owner's manual.
- When clamps are connected properly, turn the Jump-Starter Power Switch to ON.
- Turn the ignition ON and crank the engine in 5-6 second bursts until the engine starts.
- Turn the Jump-Starter Power Switch back to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the negative (-) engine or chassis clamp first, then disconnect the positive (+) battery clamp.
WARNING - To reduce the risk of injury or property damage:
- Follow all safety instructions in the "Specific Safety Instructions for Jump Starters" section.
- This power system is for 12-volt DC battery systems ONLY.
- Never touch red and black clamps together.
- After use, turn the Jump-Starter Power Switch OFF.
CAUTION - To reduce the risk of property damage:
- Vehicles with on-board computerized systems may be damaged. Read the vehicle manual before jump-starting.
- Excessive engine cranking can damage the starter motor. If the engine fails to start after recommended attempts, discontinue procedures and investigate other problems.
- If connections are incorrect, the Reverse Polarity Indicator will light and an alarm will sound. Disconnect and reconnect with correct polarity.
- If the vehicle fails to start, turn off the ignition, turn off the Jump-Starter Power Switch, disconnect the leads, and contact a qualified technician.
- Recharge the unit fully after each use.
