RF Energy Exposure and Product Safety Guide for Two-Way Radios
Before using this radio, read this guide for important operating instructions on safe usage, RF energy awareness, and control for compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
⚠️ ATTENTION!
- User instructions should accompany the device when transferred to other users.
- Do not use this device if the operational requirements described herein are not met.
This two-way radio uses electromagnetic energy (RF) for communication. Improper use can cause biological damage. Retevis radios are designed and tested to meet government-established RF exposure levels. Users are advised to follow specific operating instructions to control RF energy exposure.
For more information on RF energy exposure and control, please refer to: www.who.int/en/
For occupational use, local government regulations require users to be aware of and control their exposure. Your Retevis radio includes an RF Exposure Product Label and this manual provides necessary information.
Radio License (Applicable to licensed radio)
Business two-way radios operate on regulated frequencies requiring a license from local radio management departments (e.g., FCC, ISED, OFCOM). Contact your local department for classification and usage details. Use outside the intended country may be prohibited by government regulations.
Unauthorized Modification and Adjustment
Modifications not expressly approved by the responsible party may void the user's operating authority. Transmitter adjustments should only be made by certified professionals. Unauthorized component replacement may violate regulations.
FCC Requirements
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the condition that it does not cause harmful interference. For licensed radios, this applies. For other devices, operation is subject to two conditions: (1) it must not cause harmful interference, and (2) it must accept any received interference.
(Only Applicable to GMRS radio station): A valid individual license is required to operate a GMRS station. Obtain an FCC Form 605 & 159 from the FCC website (fcc.gov/wireless/support/fcc-form-605) for application. Contact the FCC at 1-888-225-5322 or visit fcc.gov for more information. Licensees may allow immediate family members to operate their GMRS station.
Class A/B Digital Device Compliance
- Industrial Environment (Class A): Tested and complies with limits for commercial environments. Improper installation or use may cause harmful interference.
- Home Environment (Class B): Tested and complies with limits for residential installations. If interference occurs, try reorienting the antenna, increasing separation, or consulting a dealer/technician.

Refer to the package for frequency restriction warnings.
IC Requirements (Canada)
This device contains licence-exempt transmitter(s)/receiver(s) that comply with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada's licence-exempt RSS(s). Operation is subject to two conditions: (1) This device may not cause interference. (2) This device must accept any interference, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
RF Exposure Compliance and Control Guidelines
Occupational/Controlled Use: Designed for use by individuals aware of hazards and minimization techniques during employment.
General Population/Uncontrolled Use: Designed for general public use.
To ensure compliance with occupational/controlled environment exposure limits, follow these procedures:
- When operating the radio, wear it on the body using an approved Retevis clip, holder, holster, case, or body harness. Using non-Retevis approved accessories may exceed RF exposure limits.
- Transmit no more than 50% of the total duty factor. Transmit by pressing the PTT button; release to receive. Transmitting only necessary information is important as RF energy exposure occurs during transmission.
- DO NOT operate the radio without a proper antenna attached, as this can damage the radio and exceed RF exposure limits. Use only the supplied or manufacturer-authorized antenna.
- DO NOT transmit for more than 50% of total radio use time, as this can exceed RF exposure compliance requirements.
- During transmissions, your radio generates RF energy that may cause interference. Turn off the radio in areas with posted notices to do so.
- DO NOT operate the transmitter in areas sensitive to electromagnetic radiation (e.g., hospitals, aircraft, blasting sites).
- Portable Device: For body-worn configurations, maintain a separation distance of at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) between the head/device and the antenna.
- Mobile Device: Maintain separation distance as per regulations. Ensure sufficient distance from externally mounted antennas. Transmit only when people outside the vehicle are at the recommended minimum lateral distance.
Hand-held Mode
Hold the radio vertically, keeping the microphone and antenna at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) from your nose or lips. Keep the antenna away from your eyes. Maintaining distance reduces RF exposure.
Phone Mode
When making or receiving calls, hold the radio like a wireless telephone and speak directly into the microphone. Do not use while driving.
Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility
NOTE: Electronic devices can be susceptible to EMI if not adequately shielded or designed for compatibility.
Avoid Choking Hazard
⚠️ Choking Hazard: Small Parts. Not for children under 3 years.
Turn off your radio power in the following conditions:
- Before removing/installing a battery or accessory, or when charging the battery.
- In potentially hazardous environments: near electrical blasting caps, in blasting areas, or in explosive atmospheres (e.g., flammable gas, dust particles, metallic powders).
- While taking on fuel or parked at gasoline service stations.
To avoid electromagnetic interference and/or compatibility conflicts:
- Turn off your radio in any facility with posted notices instructing you to do so, including hospitals or healthcare facilities (where equipment may be sensitive to RF energy).
- Turn off your radio when on board an aircraft. Use must comply with airline regulations.
Protect your hearing:
- Use the lowest necessary volume.
- Turn up volume only in noisy surroundings.
- Turn down volume before adding a headset or earpiece.
- Limit headset/earpiece use at high volume.
- When using without a headset, do not place the radio's speaker directly against your ear.
- Be cautious with earphones; excessive sound pressure can cause hearing loss.
Note: Prolonged exposure to loud noises can temporarily or permanently affect hearing. The louder the volume, the less time is needed for hearing damage.
Avoid Burns
Antennas
⚠️ Do not use a portable radio with a damaged antenna. Contact with skin may cause minor burns.
Batteries
⚠️ When conductive materials (jewelry, keys, chains) touch battery terminals, they can short-circuit the battery, become hot, and cause burns. Handle batteries with care, especially when placing them in pockets or containers with metal objects.
⚠️ BATTERY WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
- Store spare batteries securely.
- If the battery compartment does not close securely, stop using the product and keep it away from children.
- If batteries are suspected to have been swallowed or placed inside the body, seek immediate medical attention.
- Dispose of used batteries safely and immediately.
Long Transmission
The radiator and chassis may become hot during extended transmissions.
Safety Operation
Forbid
- Do not use the charger outdoors or in moist environments; use only in dry locations.
- Do not disassemble the charger; risk of electrical shock or fire.
- Do not operate a damaged charger.
- Do not place a portable radio in or near an airbag deployment area, as it may be propelled with great force and cause injury during airbag inflation.
To reduce risk:
- Pull the plug, not the cord, when disconnecting the charger.
- Unplug the charger from the AC outlet before performing maintenance or cleaning.
- Contact Retevis for repair assistance.
- The adapter should be installed near the equipment and be easily accessible.
Approved Accessories
This radio meets RF exposure guidelines when used with Retevis supplied or designated accessories. Using other accessories may not ensure compliance and may violate regulations.
