RF Exposure Compliance and Control Guidelines

Occupational/Controlled Radio: Designed for use only by individuals aware of hazards and minimization methods during employment. Not intended for general population/uncontrolled environments.

General Population/Uncontrolled Radio: Designed for general population/uncontrolled use.

To control exposure and ensure compliance with limits, always follow these procedures:

  • When worn on the body, always use a Retevis approved clip, holder, holster, case, or body harness. Using approved accessories is crucial as non-approved ones may exceed RF exposure limits.
  • Transmit no more than 50% of the total radio use time. Transmit (Talk) by pushing the PTT button; receive (listen) by releasing it. Transmitting only necessary information helps manage RF energy exposure.
  • DO NOT operate the radio without a proper antenna. This can damage the radio and cause you to exceed RF exposure limits. Use only the supplied or manufacturer-authorized antenna with specified gain.
  • DO NOT transmit for more than 50% of total radio use time, as this can exceed RF exposure compliance requirements.
  • During transmissions, your radio generates RF energy that may interfere with other devices. Turn off the radio in areas where signs prohibit its use.
  • DO NOT operate the transmitter in areas sensitive to electromagnetic radiation, such as hospitals, aircraft, or blasting sites.
  • Portable Device: Operate with documented antennas. RF exposure compliance is limited to specific belt-clip and accessory configurations. Maintain a separation distance of at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) between the head and the device or its antenna.
  • Mobile Device: Maintain separation distance as per regulations. Ensure sufficient distance from a properly installed externally-mounted antenna. Transmit only when people outside the vehicle are at the recommended minimum lateral distance.

Hand-held Mode (if applicable)

Hold the radio vertically, keeping the microphone and antenna at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) away from your nose or lips. Keep the antenna away from your eyes. Maintaining proper distance reduces RF exposure.

Phone Mode (if applicable)

When placing or receiving a call, hold the radio like a wireless telephone. Speak directly into the microphone. Do not use the equipment while driving.

Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility

NOTE: Most electronic devices are susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI) if not adequately shielded or designed for electromagnetic compatibility.

Avoid Choking Hazard

⚠️ Small Parts. Not for children under 3 years.

Turn off your radio power in the following conditions:

  • Before removing/installing a battery or accessory, or when charging the battery.
  • In potentially hazardous environments: Near electrical blasting caps, in blasting areas, or in explosive atmospheres (e.g., flammable gas, dust particles, metallic powders, grain powders).
  • While refueling or parked at gasoline service stations.

To avoid electromagnetic interference and/or compatibility conflicts:

  • Turn off the radio in facilities with posted notices instructing you to do so.
  • Turn off the radio in hospitals or health care facilities where equipment (e.g., Pacemakers, Hearing Aids) may be sensitive to external RF energy.
  • Turn off the radio when on board an aircraft. Use must comply with airline crew instructions.

Protect your hearing:

  • Use the lowest volume necessary for your task.
  • Turn up the volume only in noisy surroundings.
  • Turn down the volume before adding a headset or earpiece.
  • Limit the time you use headsets or earpieces at high volume.
  • When using the radio without a headset, do not place the speaker directly against your ear.
  • Be cautious with earphones; excessive sound pressure can cause hearing loss.

Note: Exposure to loud noises can temporarily or permanently affect hearing. The louder the volume, the less time is required for hearing damage. Hearing damage from loud noise may be undetectable initially and can have a cumulative effect.

Safety Precautions

Avoid Burns

  • Antennas: Do not use a portable radio with a damaged antenna. Contact with skin can cause minor burns.
  • Batteries: Exercise care when handling batteries. Prevent conductive materials (jewelry, keys, chains) from touching exposed terminals, which can cause short circuits and heat. Keep batteries away from children. Store spare batteries securely. If the battery compartment does not close securely, stop use and keep away from children. Seek immediate medical attention if batteries are swallowed or placed inside the body. Dispose of used batteries safely and promptly.
  • Long Transmission: Extended transmissions can cause the transceiver's radiator and chassis to become hot.

Safety Operation

  • Forbid:
    • Do not use the charger outdoors or in moist environments; use only in dry conditions.
    • Do not disassemble the charger; this may cause electrical shock or fire.
    • Do not operate a damaged charger.
    • Do not place the radio in an airbag deployment area, as it may be propelled with great force and cause injury when the airbag inflates.
  • To reduce risk:
    • Pull the plug, not the cord, when disconnecting the charger.
    • Unplug the charger from the AC outlet before cleaning or maintenance.
    • Contact Retevis for repair assistance.
    • The adapter should be installed near the equipment and be easily accessible.
