Introduction

General Information

The Zeiss S22 Floor Stand is designed to connect a motorized operation microscope and is particularly suitable for use in ophthalmic surgery. It can support equipment weighing up to 19 kg on its outer carrier arm (1). The inner carrier arm (2) houses two lamp slide-in modules, each with a 12 V/100 W halogen bulb, to supply fiber light guides. A spare lamp module is provided on the back of the stand. The stand column can be vertically adjusted within a range of 200 mm using a foot or hand control panel. An emergency stop button is integrated into the front of the stand. Two rotary knobs control the brightness of the fiber illumination, with one convertible to control halogen bulb illumination for connected instruments.

Diagram of Stand (Page 5)

The diagram shows a robust floor stand with a stable base, a vertical column, and two articulated arms. The outer carrier arm (1) is positioned to hold a microscope, while the inner carrier arm (2) houses lamp modules and connections.

Diagram of Components (Page 6)

This diagram details various parts of the stand. It labels the outer carrier arm (1), the main column with controls and indicators (2, 3, 8, 9), and numerous controls, selectors, and connectors on the lower section (10-18). It also shows plugs for electrical supply (19, 20, 21) and attachment hardware (22, 23).

Operation

Mounting the Microscope Equipment

The following steps describe mounting an OPMI 6 S FR XY on the S22 Floor Stand:

Diagram for Mounting (Page 9)

This diagram illustrates the process of attaching a microscope to the stand's arm. It shows the stand's arm, carrier stem, securing screws, and various plugs and connectors for power and light guides. Numbered parts correspond to the text instructions for attaching the microscope, binocular tube, eyepieces, and connecting FC light guides and power cables.

User Check List

The following points must be checked before each operation (without patient):

Caution: If a function fails, do not use the unit. Eliminate the cause or contact the service department. If a function fails during surgery, try to remedy the situation or contact the service department.

Diagram for Check List (Page 10)

This diagram provides a simplified view of the S22 Floor Stand, highlighting key areas relevant to the user check list. It shows the stand's arm, column, control panel connectors, securing screws, main switch, and the wing (10) that should point towards the surgical field.

Maintenance

Changing the Lamp Assembly

Note: If a halogen lamp (1) fails during operation, the complete lamp module (3) should be changed for the spare lamp module (item 8, page 6).

For changing the halogen lamp (1) itself, proceed as follows:

Diagram for Lamp Change (Page 11)

The left diagram on page 11 shows a halogen lamp (1) being removed from its ceramic socket (4) and module (3). A centering lug (2) on the lamp is shown engaging a recess in the module.

Mounting a Filter

Lamp module (7) can be retrofitted with a filter. Proceed as follows:

Diagram for Filter Mounting (Page 11)

The right diagram on page 11 illustrates mounting a filter onto a lamp module (7). It shows the components involved: a bolt (10), washers (9), bushing (8), knob (3), screw (2), and cap (1), being assembled into the lamp module.

Sterilization Methods

Gas (ETO) Sterilization

Standard ETO is acceptable for use with Kraton™ thermoplastic rubber based compounds. The ETO gas will penetrate the Kraton, plasticize it and relieve molded in stresses or imposed stresses on the part.

Aeration time is greatly dependent on the size of the master carton and its permeability. One week is the minimum requirement to bring the ETO residuals below 1 PPM, as tested by the standard liquid extraction method. If the product is heated to 125-135 F in an aeration chamber with high airflow, the time can be accelerated to as little as four days.

Gamma Sterilization

Kraton thermoplastic rubber can be sterilized using gamma radiation without suffering a large loss in physical properties even after extended storage.

Kraton G-2705 rubber was exposed to Cobalt 60 radiation doses of 3, 6, and 12 Mrads. The table below shows the effect of the radiation on the tensile properties of the material after being aged for 21 months.

Property Original 3 Mrads 6 Mrads 12 Mrads
Hardness, Shore A 35 50 43 43
Tensile Strength, psi 1200 +8% +12% -3% -15%
Modulus, psi 350 +3% -4% -10% -15%
Elongation, % 700 +3% +10% +8% +12%

Steam Sterilization

GLS Corporation can suggest the following maximum autoclave cycles for selected materials**:

There will be some slippage or creep with any Kraton thermoplastic rubber based products at these temperatures because of the relieving of molded in stress and the relaxation of imposed stresses. To minimize these effects, parts should be molded at the suggested processing conditions; and not autoclaved while being subjected to outside mechanical stresses.
