GP25PL 25 HP Rotary Phase Converter
Version 1.1.0
Important Notes Before Installation
? Most important step to know:
- NEVER start the phase converter with a load, including transformers.
- Ensure incoming service is adequate. Verify the KVA size of the transformer with your electric company; it must be larger than the HP of the idler motor.
- DO NOT use wire nuts for any connection; use bolt-down lugs.
- Check all connections, including factory connections to the power block, and recheck them after a few weeks of use.
- If the idler motor does not reach FULL SPEED when powering up the unit, shut down the phase converter immediately. Failure to do so may damage the idler motor, which is not covered under warranty. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure.
- Installation must be performed by a licensed industrial electrician. These guidelines do not supersede local and state laws.
Power Requirements
Use a motor load type breaker, not a quick blow or trip breaker.
Breaker Sizing Guidelines:
- Single Machine with Inductive Load: Double the machine's amp size. Example: If equipment draws 20 amps, use a 40 amp breaker.
- Multiple Machines: Double the amp size of the largest machine and add the amp draw of other machines that will run simultaneously. Example: 20 AMP Lathe, 9 AMP Saw, 6 AMP Milling Machine. Calculation: (20 AMPs * 2) + 9 AMPs + 6 AMPs = 40 + 9 + 6 = 55 AMPs. Use the next standard size breaker, which would be a 50 Amp two-pole breaker.
Refer to the provided chart for minimum and maximum allowed breaker sizes. For rural areas, increase the minimum breaker size by 20%.
Wire and Breaker Sizes (Single Phase, under 50 feet):
IDLER MOTOR | WIRE SIZE | BREAKER/FUSE |
---|---|---|
25 HP | 4 AWG COPPER | 40 MIN / 125 MAX |
Connecting the Idler Motor Wires
The following describes how wires are connected. Do not use wire nuts; use bolt-down lugs.
For Motors with 9 Leads:
- Connect leads 1 and 7 to L1.
- Connect leads 2 and 8 to L2.
- Connect leads 3 and 9 to L3.
- Connect leads 4, 5, and 6 together.
For Motors with 12 Leads:
- Connect leads 1, 7, 6, and 12 to L1.
- Connect leads 2, 4, 10, and 12 to L2.
- Connect leads 3, 5, 9, and 11 to L3.
A disconnect should be used if the wire run is over 50 feet.
Voltage Connections:
- 230V Connection: For NL and PL Models (low voltage).
- 460V Connection: For NH and PH Models (high voltage).
