Catalytic Neutralizer
Catalytic Neutralizer
ATTENTION: The temperature at the outlet of the exhaust system can be very high. Do not stop the vehicle in places where there are flammable materials, such as dry grass or leaves, which could come into contact with the ignition system, potentially causing a fire in dry weather.
The exhaust system includes a catalytic neutralizer, which converts toxic exhaust gases from the engine into less harmful gases. However, the system cannot completely neutralize all exhaust gases.
Caution: When driving through a water obstacle, if the water level is above the exhaust pipe, strong engine damage may occur if the engine stops.
Caution: Catalytic neutralizers are susceptible to damage from improper fuel use or engine misfires. To avoid such damage, it is important to observe the following precautions.
Fuel
Use only the fuel recommended for this vehicle. See the ENGINES section, page 345.
Starting the Engine
- Do not operate the starter for more than a few unsuccessful attempts (unburned fuel can enter the exhaust system, contaminating the catalytic neutralizer). Do not attempt to clear misfires by pressing the accelerator pedal – seek qualified assistance.
- When starting a cold engine, do not begin driving if misfires are suspected, and do not attempt to clear misfires by pressing the accelerator pedal – seek qualified assistance.
- Do not attempt to start the engine by coasting or towing the vehicle.
Driving
- If misfires are suspected or if the engine power is insufficient during normal driving at normal engine operating temperatures, you may continue driving slowly (to avoid the risk of damaging the catalytic neutralizer), but you must immediately contact a dealer or a Land Rover technical center for assistance.
- Do not allow the fuel tank to run completely empty (misfires can damage the catalytic neutralizer).
- If the vehicle burns too much oil (blue smoke from the exhaust pipe), contact a dealer or technical center, as the catalyst's efficiency may gradually decrease.
- When driving on rough terrain, avoid strong impacts to the underside of the vehicle, as this can damage the catalytic neutralizer.
- Avoid overloading and excessive engine revs.
- Do not turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving in gear.
Vehicle Technical Service
- It is very important not to allow unqualified persons to perform engine adjustments and to carry out regular technical maintenance at a dealer or Land Rover technical center.
- Do not operate the engine with a spark plug or high-voltage wire removed, or use any device to insert into the spark plug.
