Wiring and Interconnection
The HM-SMOKE230 utilizes a standard wiring configuration for mains power and interconnection:
- BLACK wire: Connects to NEUTRAL
- WHITE wire: Connects to PHASE (230 VAC)
- YELLOW wire: Used for INTERCONNECT*
*If the Interconnect wire is not needed for the installation, please insulate the end of the yellow wire to prevent any electrical hazards.
Interconnecting Smokes: When multiple HM-SMOKE230 units are wired together in interconnectable mode, if one smoke detector is triggered by smoke, all connected detectors in the circuit will simultaneously go into alarm and activate their sounders.
A diagram illustrates the wiring for a single unit showing Black to Neutral, White to Phase (230 VAC), and Yellow for Interconnect. Another diagram shows three units interconnected via Yellow wires, with a note indicating that an isolation switch must be installed in the circuit.
Danger: High voltage. Do not unplug cable until power is isolated.
Suggested Mounting Locations
Proper placement of smoke alarms is crucial for effective early warning. Smoke alarms should be located in escape routes on all levels within the household unit. For levels containing sleeping spaces, alarms must be installed within the sleeping space itself, or within 3 meters of every sleeping space door, ensuring they are audible even through closed doors.
Always refer to NZS 4514:2009 or the latest standard for full installation recommendations.
General Placement Guidelines
- On Ceilings: The best location is typically in the center of the ceiling. Avoid placing alarms in corners or areas where air might be stagnant.
- Distance from Walls/Ceilings:
- Minimum distance from a wall on a ceiling is 200mm.
- Minimum distance from the ceiling on a wall is 100mm.
- Minimum distance from a corner on a wall is 200mm.
- Beams and Joists: Beams, joists, and exposed rafters deeper than 460mm are treated as walls for placement purposes, requiring specific clearance.
- Sloped Ceilings/Roofs: For sloped ceilings or roofs, place the detector within 500mm of the apex. Avoid the "dead air space" that forms at the very peak.
- Ventilation: Smoke Detectors should be mounted a minimum of 400mm away from Air Conditioning vents or forced air vents to prevent false alarms caused by airflow.
Testing: Test the smoke detector at least once a month to ensure it is functioning correctly.
A floor plan diagram shows a typical house layout with suggested mounting points (red dots for minimum coverage, blue dots for fire service recommendations) in bedrooms, living areas, and hallways. Another diagram illustrates ceiling and wall mounting clearances, showing acceptable locations and 'don't fit areas' (dead air space) with specific measurements (e.g., Min. 200mm from wall, Min. 100mm from ceiling, Max. 300mm from ceiling to wall junction). A section for sloped roofs indicates a mounting area within 500mm of the apex, avoiding the peak.
