Phonocar 04044 Steering Wheel Control Interface
This guide provides instructions for installing the Phonocar 04044 Plug&Play interface, designed to restore steering wheel controls and services on vehicles equipped with a CAN line. The interface connects to car radios with a specific input.
Safety Precautions
Installation should be performed by trained technical personnel. Use only with 12V DC electrical systems with a negative ground. When replacing fuses, use ones with the same amperage. Do not open or attempt to repair the unit yourself; contact your retailer or qualified technician. Ensure no foreign objects enter the unit, as they can cause malfunctions or short circuits. Only turn on the unit when the cabin temperature is normal. Avoid connecting cables in a way that obstructs vehicle safety devices.
Functions
The interface allows for the recovery of steering wheel controls and services on CAN-BUS equipped vehicles. The output signals include:
- Steering Wheel Control
- Ignition +12V (for CAN-BUS protocol vehicles only)
For additional CAN-BUS services such as lighting, reverse light, handbrake, and odometer signal, an additional module 04020 is required. This module can be integrated into the 04040 interface via a simple Plug&Play connection.
Compatible Car Radio Brands: ALPINE, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Phonocar, Pioneer, Sony. These must be equipped with a REMOTE INPUT CABLE FOR SWC.
Connections
Connect the ISO connector on the car radio and the specific connector on the car. Ensure compatibility of the interface model before connecting. Connect both cables (specific ISO and car radio control wire) to the interface. Turn the vehicle's ignition on. Verify that the radio responds to the car's steering wheel commands before completing the installation and securing the unit to the dashboard.
Diagram: A visual representation shows the connection between the CAR RADIO, the Phonocar INTERFACE, and the ORIGINAL CAR CONNECTOR, with inputs for REMOTE SWC and POWER AND SPEAKERS CONNECTORS.
Programming
To program the interface, a small screwdriver is needed to open a side cover. Underneath the cover are DIP switches for setting the car and car radio. Follow the vehicle settings diagram to configure the correct car profile and select the brand of your car radio.
Micro Switch Programming (Ford): Locate your car manufacturer and model. Set the left-side switches according to the provided diagram for Ford models (e.g., C-Max 03-10, Fiesta 05-08, Focus 04-11, etc.). The diagram also shows the connection cable details (CAN L, CAN H, BATTERY, GROUND, NERO/BLACK, BIANCO/WHITE).
Car Radio Settings: Set the right-side switches on the interface according to your car radio brand and connect the wiring as instructed. For systems with integrated resistive steering wheel controls (Universal), further programming may be required via the car radio's instruction manual after the interface installation is complete.
DIPSWITCH Settings for various brands are provided, including:
- Alpine: DIPSWITCH settings and ADAPTATOR CABLE connection.
- Kenwood: DIPSWITCH settings and ADAPTATOR CABLE connection.
- Blaupunkt (Resistive): DIPSWITCH settings, ADAPTATOR CABLE connections (VIOLA/PURPLE for KEY 1/A SWC1, MARRON/BROWN for KEY 2/B SWC2, NERO/BLACK for KEY GROUND).
