Product Overview
The Phonocar 04043 is a Plug&Play interface designed to restore steering wheel controls (SWC) and other vehicle services on vehicles equipped with a CAN line. It connects to aftermarket car radios that feature a remote SWC input.
The interface provides the following output signals:
- Steering Wheel Control
- Ignition +12V (for vehicles with CAN-BUS protocol only)
To restore additional CAN-BUS services such as illumination, reverse light, handbrake, and odometer signal, the optional 04020 module is required. This module can be integrated into the 04040 interface via a simple Plug&Play connection.
Compatible Car Radio Brands: ALPINE, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Phonocar, Pioneer, Sony.
These car radios must be equipped with a REMOTE INPUT CABLE FOR SWC.
Safety Precautions and Warnings
General Warnings:
- Installation should be carried out by trained technical personnel.
- Use only with 12V DC electrical systems with a negative ground.
- When replacing a fuse, always use one with the same amperage rating.
- Do not open the unit or attempt to repair it yourself. Consult your retailer or qualified technical staff.
- Ensure no foreign objects enter the unit, as they could cause malfunctions, short circuits, or exposure to dangerous laser rays (if present).
- Turn on the unit only when the vehicle's interior temperature is normal.
- Do not connect any cables in locations that could obstruct the operation of the vehicle's safety devices.
- Keep cables away from all car security devices.
Installation and Connections
Connect the ISO connector on the car radio and the specific connector on the car. Verify the compatibility of the interface model before connecting.
Connect both harnesses (specific ISO and car radio control wire connection) to the interface. Then, turn the vehicle's ignition key.
Before completing the installation of the car sound system and fixing it on the dashboard, check that the radio responds to the car's steering wheel commands.

Programming - Vehicle Configuration
To configure the interface, you need to set the DIP switches located under a side cover.
Step 1: Accessing the DIP Switches
Insert a small screwdriver into the slot on the side cover (1). Gently lift it by levering downwards (2) until it releases from the box.

Step 2: Setting the DIP Switches for Vehicle and Radio Brand
Follow the vehicle settings diagram to configure the correct car profile and select your car radio's brand.
BMW Vehicle Settings
For BMW vehicles, set the switches on the left side as indicated:

Programming - Car Radio Settings
Set the switches on the right side of the interface according to your car radio brand and connect the wiring as per the following instructions.
WARNING: For connections to multimedia systems with integrated resistive steering wheel controls (Universal), continue programming using your car radio's instruction manual after the interface installation is complete.
Alpine
