Lennox PureAir™ Air Purification System: Homeowner's IAQ Guide
For Models PCO-12C, PCO-20C
General Information
The PureAir™ air purification system is designed to significantly reduce airborne volatile organic compounds, cooking odors, common household odors, airborne dust particles, mold spores, and pollen in residential spaces. It features a MERV 9 Pleated Filter, UVA lamps, and a Metal Insert coated with a titanium dioxide catalyst. As air passes through, the pleated filter captures a percentage of airborne particles and bioaerosols larger than 0.3 microns. Smaller particles, odors, and chemicals continue through the system, where the UVA lamp activates the catalyst. This catalyst, combined with water vapor, forms hydroxyl radicals that neutralize remaining odors and chemicals.
Important Note: The PureAir™ system is not intended for remediation of active mold growth or high levels of chemicals. Mold must be professionally remediated before installing the PureAir™ system. For sudden contamination events (e.g., burned food, painting), open windows and doors for rapid reduction of contaminants, as the system will not immediately reduce odors.
Improving Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Optimal indoor air quality is achieved through source reduction, ventilation, humidification, and purification methods.
Source Reduction
Identify and remove or reduce sources of poor indoor air quality. Key pollutants include:
- Dirt & Dust: Seal HVAC ducts to prevent leakage from unconditioned spaces. Use HEPA-filtered vacuums to remove small dirt particles effectively.
- Odors/Chemicals: Remove odor sources and use products that minimize airborne contaminants. The PureAir™ system removes and destroys odors and chemicals.
- Mold: Minimize mold by controlling moisture; maintain relative humidity between 30%-50%. Address roof or water pipe leaks promptly. Contact a contractor for leak issues. Lennox offers products to manage home humidity levels.
After professional mold remediation, the PureAir™ system (models PCO-12C and PCO-20C) helps remove low-level mold spores. Optional Healthy Climate™ Germicidal Lights can further reduce new mold growth on surfaces.
Ensure optimal IAQ by using non-porous or externally insulated ducts, especially on the supply side.
If active mold growth is present, consult a mold remediation specialist. Lennox sponsors the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA).
Ventilation
Adequate ventilation reduces indoor contaminants. Natural ventilation via open windows is an option, but may not be suitable for individuals sensitive to outdoor pollutants. Healthy Climate™ Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV1-150, ERV1-200) and Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV1-150, HRV1-200) provide filtered ventilation. Install exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to remove stale or contaminated air.
Humidification
Dry air can cause discomfort and respiratory issues. Maintaining proper moisture levels with Healthy Climate™ Humidifiers (models WB2-12, WB2-17, WP2-18) enhances comfort and works well with the PureAir™ system.
Purification
The PureAir™ system converts chemicals into carbon dioxide, water, and minerals. Healthy Climate™ germicidal lights kill or inactivate molds. For best results, install germicidal lights near the A/C coil to prevent mold growth.
Monitoring and Maintaining IAQ
Continuously monitor indoor air quality parameters such as Temperature, Relative Humidity (%RH), and Carbon Monoxide (CO). A Total Volatile Organic Compound (TVOC) test kit is also available for identifying chemical contaminants.
Routine Maintenance
Sustaining a healthy climate requires regular system maintenance. This includes changing filters and lamps on the PureAir™ system, replacing humidifier pads, and ensuring air ducts and A/C coils are clean and properly serviced. A semi-annual service contract with a Lennox dealer is recommended for optimal performance. Maintenance is especially critical for individuals with allergies, asthma, or other environmental sensitivities.
For information on allergy and asthma triggers, contact the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (www.aafa.org).
Refer to the PureAir™ Air Purification System Installation and Maintenance Instructions for detailed maintenance procedures.
System Overview Diagram
The "Lennox® Healthy Climate™ House" diagram illustrates the integration of the PureAir™ Air Purification System within a home's HVAC setup. It shows how the system works with Central Heating/AC, Humidifier, Dehumidifier, and HRV/ERV units to manage airflow and air quality. The diagram depicts different air streams: Outside Air, Combustion Gas, Stale Air, Treated Air, and Return Air, highlighting the circulation of purified air throughout the house.
