Our Thanks, The History of CB Radio, and Customer Service

History of CB Radio (Citizens Band)
Invented by Al Gross in 1945, CB radio initially served as a communication method for soldiers during World War II. After the war, Gross strove to make two-way radios a personal communication medium, and the Citizens Band was established by law in the U.S. in 1949. It wasn't until the 1970s that technology evolved, and the CB radio market became popular as a communication method for drivers to signal police speed traps and road hazards.

The Citizens Band service consists of 40 frequency channels, mostly spaced 10 kHz apart. Transmitter power is limited to 4 watts in the U.S., and range can vary depending on terrain and product quality.

Currently, Citizens Band service does not require a license to operate, regardless of age, as long as usage regulations established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. are respected.

Petition to Amend FCC Section 95 Regulations
In 2016, Cobra petitioned the FCC to revise Section 95 regulations to allow CB radios to use Frequency Modulation (FM). Cobra argues that FM offers better voice quality and reduced noise interference, enhancing the quality of two-way radios and providing a customer benefit.

Through the direct efforts of Cobra Electronics and the enthusiastic support of its loyal customers and distribution network, the FCC granted the request. In 2021, Part 95 was officially updated to include FM as an option for two-way radio use.

Today, thanks to Cobra Electronics' petitions to improve Citizens Band quality, users can enjoy the benefits of CB radio communication across a wide range of sectors.

The manufacturer is not responsible for any radio or television interference caused by unauthorized modifications to this equipment. Such modifications could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.

Installation

Location
Plan the location for the CB transceiver and microphone holder before installation. Choose a location that is convenient for use but does not obstruct the driver or passenger. The transceiver is typically mounted under the dashboard, with the microphone holder beside it. NOTE: The transceiver is held by a universal mounting bracket with wing screws for angle adjustment. The bracket includes two self-tapping screws and star washers. Mounting must be mechanically secure and the location convenient.

Mounting and Connection

  1. Hold the radio with the mounting bracket in the desired location. If there is no interference, remove the bracket and use it as a template to mark the screw locations.
  2. Drill holes and secure the bracket.
  3. Connect the antenna cable plug to the "ANT" jack on the rear of the unit.
  4. Connect the red DC power cord wire to a 12-volt accessory fuse or directly to the battery. NOTE: The transceiver is held by a universal mounting bracket...
  5. Connect the black wire to the negative side of the vehicle's electrical system, usually the chassis. Any convenient location with good electrical contact (paint removed) can be used. NOTE: Before installing the CB radio, visually check vehicle battery connections to determine positive/negative terminals. A vehicle grounded by the negative terminal will have its negative wire grounded to the chassis.
  6. Connect the power cable to the "POWER" jack on the rear of the unit. Observe polarity markings.
  7. The microphone can be attached to either side of the radio using provided screws. It can also be mounted on the dashboard or other convenient location.
  8. Secure the microphone to the front of the CB radio. NOTE: If the microphone is not connected, no sound will be heard through the speaker.

PA (Public Address)

  1. Connect an external PA speaker to the PA jack on the rear panel.
  2. Press the CB/PA/WX button to change modes. NOTE: The PA speaker must have 8-ohm impedance and at least 4.0 watts nominal power. The speaker should be directed away from the microphone to prevent acoustic feedback. CB channel activity will be heard through the PA speaker. Adjust volume to a normal listening level.

CB Antenna
The transmitter's maximum output power is limited by the FCC, and the antenna plays a crucial role in transmission distance. Only a properly matched antenna system will allow for maximum output power. Cobra's loaded antenna models are highly recommended for most installations. Consult your Cobra dealer for more details or call 1 800 543-1608 to speak with a Cobra representative. A standard antenna connector is provided on the transceiver for easy connection.

For optimal performance in passenger cars, the ideal antenna location is the center of the roof. The second-best location is the center of the trunk. For trucks with fiberglass door panels, the exterior mirror should be grounded to the chassis using a ground strap when the antenna is mounted on the mirror bracket.

Three-way antennas are also available and allow the use of all three bands (AM-FM and CB) with a single antenna. However, this type of antenna generally has a lower-than-normal transmission and reception range compared to standard single-band CB antennas.

Cobra offers CB antennas and mounting solutions that can be purchased online. Please visit www.cobra.com, or if you wish to speak with an expert, please call 1 800 543-1608 and a member of our customer service team can assist you.
