Cobra 29 LX Professional CB Radio User Manual

Thank you for purchasing the Cobra 29 LX professional CB radio transceiver. Used properly, this Cobra product will provide you with many years of reliable service.

History of CB Radio (Citizens Band)

Invented by Al Gross in 1945, CB radio initially served as a means of communication for soldiers during World War II. After the war, Gross strove to make two-way radios a means of personal communication, and the citizens band radio service was established by law in the United States in 1949. It wasn't until the 1970s that technology evolved and the CB radio market became established as a means of communication among drivers to report police speed traps and road hazards.

The citizens band radio service consists of 40 frequency channels that are mostly spaced 10 kHz apart. Transmitter power is limited to 4 watts in the United States, and range can vary depending on terrain and product quality.

Currently, the citizens band radio service does not require a license to operate, regardless of age, as long as the operating regulations established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States are followed.

Petition to Modify FCC Section 95 Regulations

In 2016, Cobra petitioned the FCC to revise Section 95 regulations to allow CB radios to use frequency modulation (FM). Cobra argues that FM offers better voice quality and reduced noise interference, which improves the quality of two-way radios and is an advantage for the customer.

Thanks to the direct efforts of Cobra Electronics and the enthusiastic support of its loyal customers and distribution network, the FCC granted the request. In 2021, Part 95 was officially updated to include FM as an option for two-way radio operation.

Today, thanks to Cobra Electronics' petitions to improve the quality of the citizens band radio service, users can enjoy the benefits of CB radio communication across a wide range of sectors.

AM/FM Radio 29 LX Features

The Cobra 29 LX is a professional CB radio with AM/FM dual-mode capabilities, 4 watts of power, 40 channels, and a 4-color LCD screen. Key features include:

Installation

Location

Plan the location of the CB transceiver and microphone bracket before starting the installation. Choose a location that is convenient for use but does not obstruct the driver or passenger.

The transceiver is typically mounted under the dashboard, with the microphone bracket placed nearby.

NOTE: The transceiver is held in the universal mounting bracket by two wing nuts that allow it to be adjusted to a convenient angle. The bracket includes two self-tapping screws and star washers. Mounting should be mechanically secure and the location convenient.

Mounting and Connection

  1. Hold the radio with the mounting bracket in the desired location. If there is no interference, remove the bracket and use it as a template to mark the mounting screw locations.
  2. Drill the holes and secure the bracket.
  3. Connect the antenna cable plug to the jack marked "ANT" on the back of the unit.
  4. Connect the red wire of the DC power cord to a 12-volt accessory fuse or directly to the battery.
  5. Connect the black wire to the negative side of the vehicle's electrical system. This is typically the chassis.
  6. Plug the power cord into the jack marked "POWER" on the back of the unit. Be sure to observe polarity markings.
  7. The microphone can be attached to either side of the CB radio using the supplied screws. The microphone can also be mounted on the dashboard or any other convenient location.
  8. Attach the microphone to the front of the CB radio.

NOTE: If the microphone is not connected, sound will not be heard through the speaker.

PA (Public Address or Sound System)

  1. Connect an external PA speaker to the PA jack on the rear panel.
  2. Press the CB/PA/WX button to change modes.

NOTE: The PA speaker should have an 8-ohm impedance and a rated power of at least 4.0 watts. The speaker should be directed away from the microphone to prevent acoustic feedback. CB channel activity will be heard through the PA speaker. Adjust the volume to a normal listening level.

CB Antenna

Since the transmitter's maximum output power is limited by the FCC, the antenna plays a crucial role in transmission distance. Only a properly matched antenna system will allow for maximum output power. Cobra's loaded antenna models are highly recommended for most installations. Consult your Cobra dealer for more details or call 1 800 543-1608 to speak with a Cobra representative. A standard antenna connector is provided on the transceiver for easy connection.

For optimal performance in passenger cars, the ideal antenna location is the center of the roof. The second best location is the center of the trunk. Since many newer model trucks are equipped with a fiberglass door trim, the exterior mirror should be grounded to the chassis using a grounding strap when the antenna is mounted on the mirror bracket.

Three-way combination antennas are also available and allow the use of all three bands (AM-FM and CB) using a single antenna. However, this type of antenna generally has a lower than normal transmission and reception range compared to standard "single-band" CB antennas.

Cobra offers CB antennas and mounting solutions that can be purchased online. Please visit www.cobra.com, or if you wish to speak with an expert, please call 1 800 543-1608 and a member of our customer service team can assist you.
