Introduction
Our Thanks, The CB Story, and Customer Assistance
Thank you for purchasing the Cobra 29 LTD AM/FM Pro Series CB Radio Transceiver. This product is designed to provide many years of reliable service.
Citizens Band Radio History
The Citizens Band (CB) radio service was established in the U.S. in 1949, evolving from military communication needs. It gained popularity in the 1970s among drivers for reporting road conditions and hazards. The service consists of 40 channels, with transmitter power limited to 4 watts in the U.S. Operation does not require a license, provided Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules are followed.
Petition For FCC Part 65 Rule Changes
In 2016, Cobra petitioned the FCC to allow CB radios to use frequency modulation (FM), citing improved speech quality and reduced noise interference. This petition was granted, and Part 95 rules were updated in 2021 to include FM as an option, enhancing the CB radio experience.

Installation
Location
Select a convenient operating location that does not interfere with the driver or passenger. The transceiver is typically mounted under the dash with the microphone bracket beside it. The universal mounting bracket allows for angle adjustment via thumbscrews. The bracket includes self-tapping screws and star washers for secure mounting.
Mounting and Connection
- Position the radio and mounting bracket. If no interference, use the bracket as a template to mark screw locations.
- Drill holes and secure the bracket.
- Connect the antenna cable plug to the "ANT" receptacle on the back of the unit.
- Connect the red lead of the DC power cord to an accessory 12-volt fuse or directly to the battery. Connecting to an accessory fuse prevents accidental battery drain.
- Connect the black lead to the negative side of the vehicle's electrical system (usually the chassis). Ensure a good electrical contact, removing paint if necessary. Verify vehicle's battery polarity before connecting.
- Plug the power cable into the unit's "Power" jack, observing polarity markings.
- Mount the microphone to either side of the CB or any convenient location using the supplied screws.
- Attach the microphone to the front of the CB. If the microphone is not connected, no audio will be heard.
Antennas
The antenna is critical for transmission distance, as transmitter power is FCC limited. A properly matched antenna system is essential for maximum power output. Cobra loaded type antenna models are recommended. For optimum performance in passenger cars, mount the antenna on the center of the roof or trunk. For trucks with fiberglass door skins, ensure the outside mirror is grounded to the chassis via a ground strap. 3-way combination antennas are available but may offer less range than single-band antennas. Cobra offers CB antennas and mounting solutions online at www.cobra.com.
Operation
Turning On Your CB
Ensure the power cord, antenna, and microphone are properly connected. Set the CB/PA button to the CB position. Rotate the On/Off Volume knob clockwise to a normal listening level.
Setting AM/FM
The 29 LTD Series supports both AM and FM modes on Channels 1-40. AM is the default. To switch to FM, press and release the channel selector knob. A green indicator next to the channel number confirms FM mode.
Setting Channel Selector
Select any of the forty channels. The selected channel is indicated by the LED readout above the channel selector knob.
Calibrate for SWR (Standing Wave Ratio)
SWR calibration adjusts antenna length and monitors coaxial cable/RF connection quality for optimal performance. Perform calibration in an open area (not a garage) with vehicle doors closed and no one near the antenna.
- Select Channel 20.
- Switch the S/RF-SWR-CAL knob to the CAL position. The Antenna Indicator LED will illuminate when transmitting if SWR is high.
- Push and hold the microphone button.
- While holding the mic button, adjust the SWR CAL knob so the meter needle swings to the CAL mark.
- While still holding the mic button, set the S/RF-SWR-CAL switch to the S/RF position and then to SWR to read the SWR value.
- Repeat steps 2-5 for Channels 1 and 40.
Note: SWR readings may be slightly higher on Channels 1 and 40. An SWR reading over 3 is not acceptable. Adjust antenna height (higher or lower) as needed and repeat recalibration.
To Receive
Rotate the On/Off Volume knob clockwise. The RX/TX LED illuminates during reception, and the lower portion of the meter indicates incoming signal strength.
S-Meter
The S-Meter indicates received signal strength. Ensure the S/RF-SWR-CAL switch is in the S/RF position.
NB-ANL/ANL/OFF (Noise Blanker/Automatic Noise Limiter) Switch
- ANL: Activates the Automatic Noise Limiter to reduce vehicle electronics noise.
- NB/ANL: Activates both the RF Noise Blanker and ANL for increased noise filtration.
- OFF: Disables all noise filtration.
Note: The RF noise blanker is effective against repetitive noises like ignition interference.
Bright/Dim Switch
Use the BRT or DIM setting to adjust the brightness of the channel indicator and multi-function meter for day or nighttime driving.
RF Gain Control
Optimizes reception in strong or weak signal areas. Turn counterclockwise to reduce gain in strong signal areas; turn clockwise to increase gain in weak signal areas.
Setting Delta Tune (29 LTD/29 LTD Chrome)
Delta-Tune acts as a fine-tuning control to improve intelligibility and eliminate adjacent channel interference. Rotate the Delta Tune knob to the center position for optimal tuning.
Setting TalkBack (29 LTD Chrome)
Adjusts the desired amount of modulation talk-back heard through the speaker during transmit. Turning the knob fully counterclockwise turns talk-back off.
Dimmer Control (29 LTD NightWatch®)
Controls the brightness of the front panel, signal strength meter, and channel display. Rotate clockwise for maximum brightness, counterclockwise for minimum.
Setting Squelch
Squelch (SQ) eliminates background noise when no signal is present. 1. Full clockwise rotation closes the "gate", allowing only strong signals. 2. Full counterclockwise rotation opens the "gate", allowing all signals. 3. To set the Desired Squelch Setting (DSS), turn the Squelch control counterclockwise until noise is heard, then turn clockwise just until the noise stops.
To Transmit
1. Select the desired channel. Caution: Ensure the antenna is properly connected before transmitting. Transmitting without an antenna or with a poorly matched antenna can damage the transmitter. Review FCC Part 95 Rules and Regulations before transmitting.
Set Dynamike®
Controls microphone sensitivity (outgoing audio level). Set fully clockwise initially for maximum voice volume. Adjust lower if necessary. To transmit, push and hold the microphone button, speaking clearly about two inches from the microphone. Release the button to receive.
RF Meter
This meter indicates RF output (outgoing signal) while transmitting. The S/RF-SWR-CAL switch must be in the S/RF position.
External Speaker
An optional external speaker provides louder, clearer audio. Connect it to the external speaker jack on the rear panel. The external speaker should have 8-ohm impedance and handle at least 4.0 watts. Connecting an external speaker automatically disconnects the internal speaker. Cobra external speakers are rated at 10 watts.
PA (Public Address)
1. Connect an external PA speaker (8-ohm, minimum 4.0 watts) to the PA jack on the rear panel.
2. Set the CB/PA switch to the PA position.
3. Speak into the microphone while holding the button. Your voice will transmit through the PA speaker. Direct the speaker away from the microphone to prevent acoustic feedback.
4. Adjust PA speaker volume using the Dynamike® control.
Base Station Operation
To operate from a 120V AC house current, use a 13.8V DC Power Pack (minimum 2 amps) and a properly installed base station antenna. Warning: Do not connect directly to 120VAC.
- Connect the red (+) and black (-) leads of the transceiver to the power pack's corresponding terminals.
- Plug the power cable into the unit's "Power" jack, observing polarity.
- Connect a properly installed and matched base station antenna.
Temporary Mobile Operation
For temporary mobile use, consider an optional automobile power adapter and magnetic mount antenna from Cobra to quickly install the transceiver.
