Important Safety Information

WARNING: Your pool is an area for fun and relaxation but can quickly become dangerous if misused. Improper maintenance can lead to structural failure and release of water, causing injury or damage. Always follow safety instructions strictly. Failure to do so may result in serious injury, paralysis, or death.

Recommendations:

  • Ensure all pool users know and follow the recommendations.
  • Do not dive or jump: The pool is not deep enough and can cause concussion, paralysis, drowning, or death.
  • Do not run or fight near the pool: Wet surfaces are slippery and can cause falls.
  • Never leave children unsupervised: Drowning can occur in seconds.
  • Restrict access: Remove or raise the ladder. Use a barrier. Gates are not a substitute for supervision. If you have a deck, ensure doors have automatic locking systems. Keep furniture and toys at least 4' (1219 mm) from the pool. Filtration system should also be 4' (1219 mm) away. Consult municipal regulations.
  • Life-saving equipment: Have a 16' (4.88m) pole with a prehensile tip and/or a 1/4" diameter, 50' rope with a buoy accessible. Poor swimmers should wear life jackets.
  • Wait 1 hour after eating before swimming: Cramps can lead to drowning.
  • Do not walk or sit on ledges: They can be slippery and cause falls.
  • Avoid alcohol or drugs: They impair judgment and reflexes.
  • Visibility: Ensure the pool bottom is always visible from the outside. Illuminate adequately at night.
  • No glass bottles: They can cause injury or damage.
  • Avoid thunderstorms: Do not use the pool during thunderstorms.
  • Keep pool clean: Unsanitary conditions can cause illness.
  • Do not swim alone: Ensure someone can assist if needed.

*Aggregate should be the finest possible stone dust and/or compaction sand. Quantity may vary based on ground quality and straightness.

Required Pool Equipment

A basic circulation and filtration system MUST be installed, including:

  • A skimmer
  • A pool pump
  • A filter
  • A water inlet
  • A bottom drain (optional)

Installation by certified installers is recommended. Contact your retailer or dealer.

Important to Consider Before Installation

Hiring installers recommended by your dealer is strongly advised. For DIY installation, a minimum of 3 people is recommended.

WARNING: Follow installation steps and recommendations carefully. Omissions can lead to serious injury and/or material damage.

Installation Notes:

  • Steps assume a perfectly straight ground.
  • For sloping sites or if slopes are required in the pool, contact a professional.
  • The pool must be perfectly level, with a maximum 1/4" difference across its diameter.

Pool Location

WARNING: Ensure your installation complies with local authorities' codes for building, plumbing, electrical, and zoning permits.

General Topography and Site Drainage

Choosing the ideal location is crucial for pool longevity. Ground leveling is critical; a slope over 1/4" can cause uneven weight distribution, leading to sinking, buckling, or wall failure. The site must drain well and be solid, with a positive slope away from the pool. Avoid depressions. A minimum 6-foot positive slope around the pool is recommended. Consult an installer if unsure.

Types of Prohibited Installations

  • Do not bury the pool: This voids the warranty. Above-ground pools are not designed for burial. The wall relies on outward water pressure for strength.
  • Avoid backfilling: Dig high sides to level, rather than adding soil to low sides, which compromises support and voids the warranty.
  • Ensure the soil is free of rocks, stones, and tree roots.
  • Never install directly on concrete, asphalt, tar paper, grass, peat moss, wood, gravel, earth, or clay.
  • Position the pool away from trees, power lines, clotheslines, and buildings to prevent diving or entanglement hazards.
  • Never install over underground power lines, gas lines, or septic tanks.
  • Ensure building gutters do not drain onto the pool foundation.
  • If near a deck, ensure the area underneath the deck near the pool is drained.
  • Finishing a pool deck on top of ledges is not recommended. If done, it should be spaced vertically at least 4 inches from the pool.

Electrical Safety: The pool must be at least 6 feet (1.83 m) from any electrical outlet. All 125-volt, 15 and 20 amp outlets within 20 ft (6.0 m) must be GFCI protected. Distance is measured via the shortest straight line path.

Ground Stability: Never install on unstable ground, with drainage problems, significant ground movement, or within 33 feet of a tree.

Site Drainage

If your site has poor drainage, water veins, or is low-lying, consider installing additional drainage around the pool perimeter. These installations should be handled by professionals.

Corrosion-Related Problems

Avoid environments promoting corrosion, like prolonged exposure to stagnant water. Metal components must be allowed to dry. Corrosion from failure to comply with recommendations is not a manufacturing defect.

  • Do not bury the pool: The wall must not contact ground or water. Top rails must remain visible.
  • Avoid chemical application areas: Chemicals can damage the liner and corrode the wall.
  • Install on a draining base: Use compaction sand or fine rock dust, not direct ground.
  • Avoid organic materials: Do not use peat moss, mulch, or soil around the pool, as they retain moisture.
  • Choose location carefully: Avoid depressions, slopes with freeze-thaw cycles, flood zones, or areas with underground water veins.
  • Check for leaks: Regularly inspect liner, water inlet, and skimmer seals. Leaks can cause corrosion and damage.
  • Check wall for impacts: Scratches from objects can damage the protective finish, initiating corrosion.

The Foundation

The foundation is critical for pool longevity. Flatness and compaction are key.

Step 1: Mark the center

Mark the pool center with a stake, considering local codes and existing installations. Do not remove the stake until Step 12.

Step 2: Mark the area

Use a measuring gallon or rope attached to the stake. Measure the pool radius plus 12" (30 cm) and outline the circle with spray paint.

Step 3: Level the ground

Start at the lowest point. Scrape off high spots to level; do not add soil, as it compacts unevenly. Remove all branches, roots, stones, and weeds to prevent liner damage.

Step 4: Level the inside

Use a garden rake, carpenter's level, and a plank (radius + 12") to smooth the surface. Compact the existing soil twice with a mechanical compactor, working from the center outwards.

Step 5: Check flatness

Use a transit, water level, or linear level to check floor flatness every 3"-5". Ensure no furrows, stones, or roots remain. A maximum level difference of 1/4" (6 mm) is allowed. Ensure the floor is straight end-to-end.

WARNING: Improper installation or non-compliance with floor recommendations can shorten pool life and cause injury or damage.

Step 6: Place aggregate mounds

Place aggregate mounds every 4' on the perimeter of the pool size line.

Step 7: Spread aggregate

Spread aggregate 8" inside and 8" outside the pool size line, creating a 16" wide strip. The uncompacted thickness should be 4-5 inches. Compact it to 2-3 inches. Use a plank and level to even the aggregate, adjusting the central stake height as needed.

Step 8: Moisten and compact

Moisten and compact the outer perimeter aggregate twice. Check flatness and thickness; the pool base must rest on a flat surface with no gaps under feet or rails. Maximum level difference is 1/4 inch. Restart if inadequate.

Step 9: Place rails and feet

Position rails and feet on the dimension line and connect them. Ensure rails are set to number 5 on the graduated scale for approximately 1/2" to 5/8" clearance between the foot's middle and the rail's end. Spacing must be equal on both sides. The gradation section of the rail must be below the bottom plate's arrow.

Step 10: Spread inner aggregate

Spread 4-5 inches of uncompacted aggregate inside the pool area, equal to the compacted outer area. Compact this area before liner installation. Save some aggregate for the cove.

Step 11: Measure for alignment

Measure from the pool center to the inside of the rail groove on each side of each foot. Distances must be equal to the pool radius. Drive an 8" nail or rod against the outside center of each foot to prevent movement and serve as a reference.

Step 12: Confirm diameter

Measure diagonals between opposite feet. For a round pool, all measurements should be identical to the pool's diameter. This ensures the pool remains round and prevents future problems.

Installation of Concrete Blocks (Optional)

Step 1: Install blocks

For a more solid base, sink concrete blocks under the feet. Ensure their upper face is level with the compacted aggregate. Blocks must be flush, wedged, and level with each other.

Step 2: Reposition feet and rails

Reposition feet and rails and re-measure as per steps 11 and 12 in "The Foundation" section.

Wall Installation

DANGER: Do not install the wall in windy or stormy weather. Requires at least 3 people. Risk of serious injury or material damage.

Basin Assembly

Once the wall is unrolled and inserted into bottom rails, check for fit:

  • Wall too long: Enlarge spacing between rails in feet by gently tapping feet outwards.
  • Wall too short: Narrow spacing between rails in feet by gently tapping feet inwards.
  • Holes align: Proceed to step 3.

Double-check rail spacing in each foot for equal alignment.

Step 1: Prepare for wall installation

Ensure you have plywood sheets, extra aggregate for the cove, and a stepladder. Position the wall roll to start unrolling where the skimmer and water inlet will be located.

Step 2: Position plywood

Place two plywood sheets inside the pool circle near the pump/filter location. Place the wall on a plywood sheet.

Step 3: Insert bottom of wall

Unroll the wall, inserting the bottom into the bottom rail. Start at a connecting foot to hide the closure behind an upright. Use plywood to keep the wall off the ground.

WARNING: Do not put sand in the bottom rail; clean rails thoroughly for easy wall insertion.

Step 4: Install top rails

Suggest installing top rails as the wall unrolls for stability. Support the wall from the outside until fully installed and closed. Secure the top of the sheet with vinyl-coated hooks attached to a rope and staked into the ground.

Assembling the Cove

The cove smooths the liner transition and prevents the liner from being trapped under bottom rails.

  • Prefabricated cove: Follow manufacturer's instructions.
  • Rock dust/sand cove: Use a polyethylene plastic film secured with duct tape around the pool to prevent aggregate contaminants from affecting the wall.
  • Create a triangular lip at the bottom of the pool wall, 3"-6" high and 8"-12" long.
  • Spread, moisten, and compact aggregate evenly inside the pool and cove, working from the center outwards. Ensure the pool center is level and flat.

Installation of the Geotextile Mat

WARNING: Use a quality 100% synthetic geotextile mat. Never install the liner directly on rock dust.

  • Step 1: Roll out the pre-cut geotextile mat to the pool size.
  • Step 2: Water the mat generously to spread and hold it in place.
  • Step 3: Use a broom to sweep the fabric from the center outwards to remove wrinkles.

Structure Assembly (General)

Installing the Uprights

Before installing uprights, check that rails are centered in feet and adjust if necessary.

  • Step 1: Insert uprights into feet until they click.
  • Step 2: Install screws in the sides of the connecting feet for added strength against ground movement. These screws are mandatory to preserve the warranty. Do not install immediately; wait until ledges are installed.

Liner Installation (General)

Refer to the liner manufacturer's instructions. Warm the liner in the sun for 1-2 hours before installation for better stretching. Choose a liner meeting APSP-4 performance criteria. Do not install in cold weather (minimum 16°C / 61°F). Use a "U/J-Hook" or "Overlap" type liner.

  • Step 1: Open the liner box carefully, avoiding sharp objects.
  • Step 2: Take the liner outside and unroll it in the sun.
  • Step 3: Inspect the liner, joints, and surface for holes. Remove shoes when walking on the liner to prevent damage.
  • Step 4: Lay the liner in the pool with patterns facing upwards. Center the bottom seam with the pool. Other seams should form parallel lines.
  • Step 5: Stretch the liner to remove creases from the bottom.

Assembling the Liner to the Pool Wall (U/J Hook)

  • Step 1: Hang the vinyl fold (no pattern) on the top of the wall.

Fixing Bottom Plates to the Structure

Fix 2 screws (14455032) on each side of the bottom plate to secure the structure. This prevents uprights and plates from slipping due to ground movement.

WARNING: Bottom plate hardware is mandatory for strength and stability during ground movement.

Filling the Pool

  • Step 1: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove air between the liner and wall, allowing the liner to stretch and adhere. This helps remove wrinkles.
  • WARNING: Do not use industrial vacuums over 5 HP, as they can damage or puncture the liner. Ensure vacuum hose edges are smooth.
  • Step 2: Seal the skimmer hole with cardboard and duct tape. Insert the vacuum hose about 24" (60cm) into the water inlet hole from the outside, keeping it at least 6" from the cove. Seal the hose and hole with duct tape to prevent air leaks.
  • Step 3: Start the vacuum. The liner will adhere to the walls. Stretch to remove any creases.
  • Step 4: Once the liner is stable and crease-free, start filling the pool with a hose while the vacuum runs. Monitor for creases and smooth them out. Inspect the structure regularly for rail and wall stability. Stop filling if the wall bends.
  • Step 5: When the water reaches about 12" (30 cm) from the bottom, stop the vacuum, remove the hose and cardboard.
  • Step 6: With 12" (30 cm) of water, faster filling is possible.
  • WARNING: Comply with local regulations for pool accessories. Entry elements must be user-safety approved.
  • Step 7: When water reaches 24" (60 cm), install the skimmer and water inlet according to manufacturer instructions. Be meticulous to prevent leaks and corrosion.
  • WARNING: A basic circulation and filtration system MUST be installed.
  • Step 8: Filtration system includes skimmer, pump, filter, and water inlet. Use and maintain equipment per manufacturer recommendations. Do not switch on until water level is correct. If water is 2" below inlet and equipment isn't installed, stop filling and install it.
  • WARNING: Never add chemicals through the skimmer; it can damage the filtration system.
  • Step 9: Fill the pool until water is 1.5"-2" from the skimmer top or the CARVIN® skimmer's 'Maximum' mark.
  • Step 10: Switch on the circulation and filtration system. Maintain per manufacturer recommendations.

Installing Safety Stickers

Affix safety stickers before using the pool. Removing them is forbidden. Failure to display stickers correctly may result in prosecution. Do not use the pool if stickers are not affixed.

WARNING: Owners and installers must fit supplied warning stickers as shown. These alert users to jumping/diving dangers and can prevent accidents.

  • Interior Sticker: Place small warning stickers on the liner above the water level and on the ledge opposite the ladder, where swimmers can see them.
  • Entry Sticker: Install the large warning sticker at the pool entrance to alert everyone to dangers like "NO DIVING - NO JUMPING - SHALLOW WATER".

Inspection and Maintenance

Foundation Drainage Protection

To protect the foundation, spread river rock or stone (min. 3/4" diameter) around the pool perimeter. Create a strip at least 10" wide and 2-3 inches thick. Ensure the top of the lower rails remains visible.

WARNING: Using organic materials like soil or peat moss will accelerate component deterioration.

Inspection

Regularly inspect the skimmer and water inlet for leaks, as these can cause corrosion and damage the pool wall. Repair or replace joints promptly. Inspect the liner for leaks; water leaks can damage the wall. Repair minor liner damage with a patch kit.

WARNING: Failure to perform inspections and repairs voids the manufacturer's warranty.

Water Chemistry

Proper water chemistry is vital for pool function, user safety, and component longevity. Unbalanced water can cause illness and premature deterioration. Regular assessment is necessary. Consult your retailer with a water sample for advice. Filtration and water circulation are key to healthy water maintenance.

WARNING: Corrosive pool water can damage the pool wall if leaks occur. This can lead to structural failure and injury.

Regular Cleaning

Keep walls and structure clean. Remove chemical deposits annually with a degreasing cleaner (no bleach). Clean the liner where deposits form from evaporation. Check and clean algae deposits on submerged surfaces regularly.

Winterising the Pool

In regions with freezing temperatures, winterize the pool. This process should take a few hours and simplifies spring opening.

WARNING: Failure to follow winterization instructions can cause irreparable damage to the pool and surrounding structures.

  • Inspection: Before closing, check water parameters (pH, alkalinity, chlorine). Unadjusted parameters damage the liner and cause corrosion. Check for liner leaks; if the water level drops, repair immediately. Check skimmer/water return for leaks. Ensure the liner is securely fastened to the wall.
  • WARNING: Leaking water during winter can cause soil movement when freezing, leading to pool damage.
  • Check the pool structure for scratches or corrosion. Repair rust with anti-corrosion products. Ensure the wall joint is solid and screws are tight.
  • WARNING: Never lower water in a frozen pool; ice can damage the liner and pool.

Water Preparation

  • Keep pool water within acceptable parameters in the weeks before closure.
  • Clean pool bottom before lowering water level.
  • Lower water level 6"-20" (15-50 cm) below the water return, depending on climate. For frost regions, lower 15"-20" (40-50 cm) below the water inlet.
  • Do not empty the pool completely; this can cause liner movement, damage from wind, or injury.
  • Use pool closure products to reduce spring opening effort and chemical costs.
  • WARNING: Check water level in autumn after winterization. If it rises drastically, drain to the recommended level.

Winterising of the Filtration and Recirculation System

  • Disconnect all hoses from the system (pump, filter, skimmer, valves, etc.).
  • Drain and winterize the pump, filter, and water heater according to their manuals.
  • Winterize CARVIN® water features per their manuals.
  • Winterize water return and skimmer openings according to climate recommendations. Ensure openings are clear of ice and water drains away from the pool.
  • If equipped with a bottom drain, use pool-specific antifreeze to prevent pipe freezing.
  • Store all components (pump, ladder, etc.) in a temperate, protected place.
  • WARNING: Do not turn off the filtration system until the pool is completely closed.

Using a Winter Cover

Use a mesh-type pool cover designed for winterizing above-ground pools. Opaque or waterproof tarpaulins are not recommended as accumulated weight can damage the structure.

Consult a pool specialist for advice on winter cover installation.

Weight for Winter Cover

Use only approved weights for winter covers. Improvised weights can be blown away and damage the pool wall.

Recommendations and Maintenance During Winter

  • Check water inlet for obstructions and ensure water drains away.
  • Ensure skimmer is free of water, snow, and ice buildup to prevent damage.
  • Remove snow from pool ledges; do not allow more than 12" (30cm) to accumulate.
  • Do not hit a pool with frozen water.
  • Do not climb inside a frozen pool, as ice can damage the liner.

Spring Opening

When outside temperature reaches 10°C (50°F) and the pool water has thawed:

  • Remove winter cover, clearing any accumulated water, dirt, and leaves.
  • Reposition and reconnect the filtration system to the skimmer and water inlet.
  • Fill the pool until the water level is in the middle of the skimmer.
  • Inspect for visible corrosion or leaks, especially around the skimmer and water inlet. Correct immediately if necessary.
  • Clean the pool bottom by vacuuming. Use the sand filter's "DRAIN" position to remove dirt without filtering.
  • WARNING: Avoid completely emptying the pool for cleaning, as it can cause liner creases. If necessary, do not leave the pool empty for extended periods.
  • Adjust chemical parameters with professional advice.
  • Ensure skimmer and water inlet are not leaking.
