Pool Location

Hiring a certified installer is highly recommended. If installing yourself, at least 3 people are advised. Comply with all local codes and permits. Choose a location with good drainage and a solid base, with a positive slope away from the pool. The ground must be free of rocks, pebbles, tree roots, bamboo, and cattails. Never install on ground where chemicals have been spread, or on concrete, asphalt, tarpaper, grass, wood, gravel, or clay. Position the pool away from trees, electric lines, cables, and buildings to prevent diving injuries. Do not install above buried electrical lines or septic tanks. Receptacles within 20 ft (6.0 m) of the pool must be GFCI protected. Do not cover rails or the bottom of the wall with mulch, as it retains moisture and can cause rust. Using materials other than specified may void the warranty.

Important to Consider Before Installing

  1. Follow all installation steps thoroughly; omissions can lead to serious accidents.
  2. The pool must be level: foundation base slope maximum ½". Floor slope from shallow to deep area should not exceed 1' in 7' (1:7) to the first slope change, and 1' in 3' (1:3) thereafter. Adjacent slopes to shallow areas and side walls have maximum slopes of 1' in 3' and 1' in 1' respectively. The first slope change point should be at least 6' (1829 mm) from the shallow end wall.
  3. When closing the wall, use the 2 wall brackets and all provided hardware; all holes must contain a screw.
  4. Prefabricated cove sections must be well compacted. Inadequate compaction can lead to liner damage or pool instability.
  5. The pool is not designed to be buried; soil weight will crush the wall.
  6. Do not install on unstable ground, ground with drainage problems, or within 10 meters of a tree.

The manufacturer is not responsible for omissions or non-compliant installations.

Preparing the Site

Installation diagrams are based on a 15x24 oval pool; adjust for different sizes. Steps 1-3 are labor-intensive and crucial for pool longevity.

The permissible tolerance for the soil in the straight metal structure and round ends is a maximum of ± 1/8 in (3.18 mm) across the entire pool. Failure to respect this level tolerance may void the warranty.

Step 1: Marking the Site

Refer to the 'Marking Diagram' and 'Marking Dimension Table'. Use bright, durable spray paint to mark the soil. Ensure extra working space. The buried foot beam extends 12" past the pool wall.

  1. Drive stakes at points A and B (at least 6" deep) to define the centers of round sections and align straight sections per the table.
  2. Tie a rope to a spray can to draw the two half-round sections using the radius specified in the table.
  3. Measure from the center stakes to draw a line joining the two halves with a straight line on each side, forming an oblong.
  4. Draw the outside trench corridor as specified in the Marking Diagram.

Diagram Description: The diagram shows the layout for marking the pool site. It indicates center points (CL), radii for round sections (Radius A, Radius B), the pool wall outline, and the working area outline (23 cm / 9" on both sides). The Marking Dimension Table provides specific measurements (D1, D2, D3, D4, Radius) in meters (feet) for various pool sizes.

18x39'6.44(21'1")6.70 (22')12,07 (39'8")

Step 2: Ground Leveling

Remove sod and any tree stumps from the installation area. Level the ground starting from the lowest point, digging down to it. Ensure the pool is installed on hard soil. Do not add loose soil to level low areas, as it will compact and destabilize the pool, voiding the warranty. Use a transit level or a long, straight plank with a carpenter's level to achieve a maximum tolerance of ± 0.125" (3.18 mm) for straightness and levelness. Ensure there are no electrical wires, septic tanks, wells, roots, buried debris, or negative slopes within 6 feet of the pool. Always install on high ground with a positive slope away from the pool.

Step 3: Trench Digging

Dig two trenches along the straight sections of the pool, 3 inches (8 cm) deep, to insert the metal structure and pressure plates. Locate and dig for patio blocks so their tops are flush with the 3-inch trench depth. The diagrams show specific trench dimensions and patio block placements for various pool sizes.

Diagram Description: Diagrams illustrate trench digging for straight sections and patio block placement. They show trench depth (3" / 8 cm), width, and the positioning of patio blocks relative to the trench for different pool sizes (e.g., 12x15, 12x18, 12x21, 12x24, 15x21, 15x24, 15x30, 18x33, 18x39). Dimensions are provided in centimeters (inches) and millimeters.

Unpacking the Pool Parts

Open all boxes and lay out all parts. Verify against the Bill of Materials (BOM) on page 23. Do not start installation if parts are missing; contact your seller. Inspect parts for defects before installation. Do not unroll the pool wall until the round section rails are assembled, as it makes installation more difficult.

Assembling the Footbeam and Buttress Posts

This assembly requires specific parts. Diagram shows the attachment of the buttress post (part 46025009) to the footbeam (part 46025008) by aligning holes. A sleeve (part 46025010) is inserted into the footbeam channel, followed by a 1/2" bolt (part 14455035) with a washer (part 14455095), another washer, and a screw nut (part 14455045). Repeat for the second bottom bolt. For the upper sleeve of the buttress post, use two washers on each side of the sleeve inside the post. Insert polystyrene blocks at each end. Tighten bolts to 66 N·m (49 ft·lbf).

Laying the Buttresses Inside the Trenches

Place the assembled buttress posts into the trenches, aligning the uprights in the middle of the patio blocks.

Assembling the Tie Straps

Refer to the table for required tie strap part numbers. Assemble using hex cap machine screw ¼-20 x 0.500" (part 14455075) and ¼-20 nuts (part 14455085). Remove ¼" radius stakes before screwing tie straps. Identify the center of the tie strap. Screw assembled tie straps to the footbeam at each end using screw (part 14433700-ZINC). Do not use an impact driver.

Assembling Pressure Plates

Assemble Pressure Plates (part 46025003) to the footbeams using 4x #12 screws (part 14433700-ZINC). Repeat for all plates. Torque screws to 4 N·m (35 in·lbf).

Squaring Out the Straight Section

This step is critical. Ensure buttresses on each side are aligned. Posts must sit in the middle of the patio block. Measure across each extremity at the bottom of the buttress post. Measurements A & B should be equal, as per the concordance table.

Diagram Description: Diagrams show measurement points (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, R) for squaring the pool structure. Measurements A and B are taken across the bottom of the buttress posts at each extremity. The table provides specific measurements for different pool sizes to ensure correct alignment.

Fill Up the Trenches

Ensure the top of the foot beam is flush with the general pool level and round sections. Fill trenches with dust stone, level it, add water, and compact thoroughly. Ensure the soil is even after compaction.

Assemble the Bottom Feet & Rails

Insert the straight section foots and rails. Screw all foots into the foot beam holes using screws (part 14455032). Do not use an impact driver. Torque screws to 4 N·m (3 ft·lbf).

Assemble the Round Section Rails

Ensure the transition from straight to round sections is level. Assemble round sections with bottom plates and long rails. Connect half-round section rails to the straight section foot. Measure from the center stake to the inside center of the rails ('R' dimension) and adjust to the pool's radius. Drive a 6" nail in the middle of each foot to secure the circle position.

Wall Installation

Do not install the wall on a windy day. Wait for calm conditions. At least 3 people are required.

Before starting, ensure the pool interior has enough sand or rock dust for a 2" bed and cove, plus two sheets of plywood and a stepladder. Position the rolled metal wall so the skimmer and return holes are at the desired starting end. Place the wall on a plywood sheet inside the pool. Unroll the wall, guiding the bottom into the lower slot of the rail. The first end of the wall must be in the center of a bottom plate for screw installation, hidden behind an upright.

Be careful not to push sand onto or into the rails, which would impede wall insertion.

Gradually install top rails as the wall unrolls for stability. Support the top of the wall until fully installed using multiple people or vinyl-covered hooks, rope, and tent pegs.

Basin Assembly

Once the wall is unrolled and inserted into bottom rails, check alignment:

Cover the wall joint with two or three layers of 2" (50mm) duct tape, ensuring screw heads are covered to protect the liner from sharp edges.

Recheck rail spacing in all bottom plates after adjustments to ensure it is equal.

Verify the pool round sections are perfectly round by checking the radius from the center to the inside of the rail on all sections. Adjust bottom plates as needed. The pool must be flat on the entire perimeter; an unlevel pool is dangerous and can collapse.

The Sand Bed

We recommend placing a 12" wide plastic sheet, taped inside the wall 8" from the ground down to the floor, to prevent contaminants from affecting the metal wall.

From the sand/stone dust inside the pool, rake a 1.5" to 2" thick layer evenly spread across the entire inside surface. This prevents tie strap screws from protruding and damaging the liner.

Soak the soil with a water hose and compact it with a mechanical compactor.

If using a prefabricated cove, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Otherwise, create a triangular cove ledge (3" to 6" high x 8" to 12" long) at the bottom of the wall using sand or soil. Dampen and recompact the cove.

The cove is mandatory and must be installed (prefabricated or handmade).

Installing the Geotextile Liner

Unpack and unfold the geotextile liner inside the pool, ensuring it is equal all around. Soak the entire surface with a water hose so it lies flat.

Liner Installation

Liner dimensions are slightly smaller than the pool frame. For best results, spread the liner in the sun for an hour before installation to warm and stretch it. Do not install below 13°C (55°F). Select a liner meeting APSP-4 performance requirements. Avoid filling the pool with very cold water.

Do not use sharp tools to open the liner box.

Inspect the liner for holes before installation. Remove shoes to prevent damaging the liner bottom.

Spread the liner inside the pool with the design pattern up. The bottom seam should be in the center of the basin, with other seams forming parallel straight lines. Ensure the liner is free of wrinkles at the bottom.

Installing the Round Section Uprights

Check that bottom plates are centered correctly in the rails of each plate; adjust if necessary. Insert uprights into each bottom plate until they click. Screws for the bottom plates are mandatory for stability against ground movements but should be installed only after top seats are in place.

Fastening the Liner on to the Pool Wall

For Assembly with a U/J Type Pool Liner:

  1. The top of the liner has a welded vinyl flange (overlap) to hang on the top of the wall. Open it with your fingers and hang it on the top of the wall.
  2. Hang the liner on the wall all around the pool, ensuring no wrinkles on the vertical portion. Adjust the liner by turning the bottom or adjusting the overlap.
  3. As you hang the overlap liner, assemble the top rails to solidify the pool. Align top rails with bottom rails, as uprights connect top and bottom plates. A rubber mallet may be needed to position upper rails and lock the liner.

Do not cut excess liner. Fold and tape it if too long. This facilitates disassembly/reassembly.

Structure Assembly

Installing the Top Plates - Round Sections

Tilt the top plate to hook onto the top rail, then lower it onto the upright. Align top plate holes with upright holes. Assemble 4 auto-tapping screws (part 14455032) per plate. Torque screws to 4 N·m (35 in·lbf).

Installing the Top Plates - Straight Sections

Insert the top plate screwing detail inside the buttress post, ensuring the rail is within the rear plate channel. Ensure the plate sits flat on the post. Assemble one screw (part 14433700) and washer (part 14073852) on each side. Torque screws to 3 N·m (27 in·lbf).

Installing the Post Covers

Insert the post cover by lining its top under the top plate and rotating the bottom towards the pool wall. Align the post cover top holes with the top plate inward holes. Assemble 4x screws per plate (part 14455032). Torque screws to 4 N·m (35 in·lbf). At the bottom of the posts, assemble one screw and washer on each side into the buttress post.

Installing the Ledges

Position all top ledges around the pool structure. Center them to the top plates and uprights. Screw top ledges to solidify upright verticality, ensuring uprights are straight first. Use wall corrugations as a guide. Pull ledges outwards so interior corners press flush against top plates. Secure with 2 screws (part 14455110) on each side, using the outermost holes. Use the best-located holes on top plates for assembly. Torque screws to 4 N·m (35 in·lbf).

Top Ledge Cover Installation

  1. Pre-assemble front (interior) and back (exterior) top ledge covers until the first click.
  2. Insert the rear part of the top ledge covers under the top ledge and turn the assembly downwards.
  3. Hold the rear part against the top ledge (interior) and push the front part (exterior) so the cover presses flush with the top ledge.
  4. Align the center slot of the top ledge cover with the center hole of the top plate. Screw together using screw 14455032. Torque screws to 4 N·m (35 in·lbf).
  5. Install the top ledge cover cap by inserting one snap into the cavity and pushing the other into place until it clicks.

Install safety labels as prescribed in the Warnings section.

Locking the Foots in Round Section

Install screws (part 14455032) at the bottom of the uprights to solidify the structure and prevent uprights and bottom plates from moving due to freezing/thawing.

Protection Against Foundation Drainage

To protect the compacted foundation and prevent drainage, spread a 10" wide strip, 2" to 4" high, of 3/4" rock or river stones around the pool. Failure to do this or using garden soil/mulch will void the warranty.

Filling the Pool with Water

Step 1: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove air between the liner and the pool wall. This helps the liner stretch and adhere to the wall, allowing you to correct folds and wrinkles. Ensure the vacuum nozzle does not have sharp corners; tape the end. Insert the nozzle into the return hole (about 12"/30 cm deep), ensuring it's at least 4"/10 cm from the pool cove. Tape the vacuum hose to the pool wall and block the return hole to keep air out. The vacuum must be outside the pool.

Do not use an industrial vacuum cleaner that could damage the liner.

Step 2: Close the skimmer opening on the outside of the pool wall with cardboard and duct tape to prevent air escape.

Step 3: Start the vacuum. The liner will adhere to the wall. Smooth out any wrinkles at the bottom. Do not wear shoes.

Step 4: Begin filling the pool with a garden hose. During filling:

Step 5: When water reaches 4" (10 cm) deep, turn off the vacuum and remove the hose.

Step 6: When water reaches 12" (30 cm) deep, a faster water flow can be used.

To allow natural expansion, the filling flow rate should not exceed 16 GPM. Do not backfill around the pool until it is completely full.

Step 7: When water reaches 24" (60 cm) deep, the liner should be properly stretched. Cut the liner holes for the water return and skimmer opening.

A basic circulation and filtration system MUST BE INSTALLED.

Step 8: Install the circulation and filtration system (skimmer, pump, filter, water return). Use and maintain equipment per manufacturer recommendations. Do not power up yet. If water reaches 2" below the water return and equipment is not installed, stop filling.

Follow all local and provincial regulations for pool accessory installation. Entry components must be safety-approved.

Step 9: Complete filling until water is 1.5" to 2" below the top of the skimmer.

Step 10: Power up the circulation and filtration system. Use and maintain equipment per manufacturer recommendations.

Inspection

Regularly inspect the skimmer and water return for leaks. Leaks can cause rust, damage the pool wall, lead to collapse, and cause significant damage or injury. Repair leaks immediately. Inspect the liner for leaks and the wall for corrosion and scratches. Small liner leaks can be repaired with kits. Repair wall corrosion and scratches with anti-rust enamel, wire brushing the surface first, then applying the product and repainting.

Neglecting pool maintenance will void the warranty.

Water Chemistry

Corrosive products in pool water can damage the wall. Check for liner leaks, as they can cause wall corrosion, weakening the structure and potentially leading to collapse or injury. Keep the wall and resin structure clean, removing chemical deposits annually with a non-bleach cleaner.

ppm = part-per-million, ppb = part per billion. This pool series is compatible with Carvin® Ollo™ Salt Chlorine Generator; consult its manual for salinity levels.

Winterizing the Pool

In regions with freezing temperatures, pools are typically closed for winter (winterizing). All CARVIN® pools are designed for outdoor winter storage, but proper winterization is necessary.

Failure to follow winterizing procedures will void the warranty.

Proper winterization takes a few hours and simplifies spring opening. As temperatures drop, chemical additions become less necessary, but periodic checks are required to maintain water quality and prevent liner tarnishing. Winterize as late as possible (late September/early October) when water is below 10°C (50°F), as contaminant proliferation slows. Do not turn off the filtration system until the pool is completely closed to prevent pipe freezing.

Inspection (Before Winterizing)

  1. Check water parameters (pH, alkalinity, chlorine). Unadjusted parameters degrade the liner and can cause wall rust.
  2. Check for liner leaks. If the water level drops significantly over a week, there's a leak. Repair holes with a kit. Check for leaks around the skimmer and water return openings and repair immediately. Ensure the liner is firmly attached to the top of the wall.
  3. Inspect the pool structure. Repair any corrosion or scratches on the wall with anti-rust enamel. Check that the wall joint is solid and screws are tight.

Preparing the Water

  1. Maintain average water parameters in the weeks before closing. Use a pool closure kit (containing algaecide and winterizing chlorine) for easier spring opening.
  2. Clean the bottom of the pool of dirt, leaves, or sand before lowering the water level.
  3. Lower the water level to be between 6" and 20" (15 cm and 50 cm) below the water return. Block or close the water return hole. The hole under the skimmer must remain open. Keep the skimmer on the pool and ensure water in it drains away from the pool. For colder regions, lower water 15" to 20" (40 cm to 50 cm) below the water return. Check local recommendations. Periodically check the water level during autumn; if it rises drastically, drain excess water.
  4. Do not empty the pool completely, as this can cause the liner to move, risk the pool being blown away, or cause injury.
  5. If you have a main drain, use pool antifreeze. Unplug the pipe connecting the main drain to the filtration system, ensure the pipe is above water level, and fill it with antifreeze until it appears at the main drain. Keep the pipe higher than the water level all winter by tying it to a top ledge.

Winterizing the Filtration System

Disconnect all hoses from the filtration system. Follow component manuals for winterizing. Store equipment (pump, ladder, etc.) in a protected, closed area. Ensure all water is drained from the system to prevent freezing damage. Never let water accumulate in the skimmer during freezing periods.

Use of a Winter Cover

Consult your local dealer for recommendations on winter cover installation. Do not allow snow accumulation over 12" (30 cm) on the pool structure. Do not hit a pool filled with frozen water or climb on a frozen pool, as this can damage the liner and structure.

Spring Opening

When the exterior temperature reaches 10°C (50°F) and the pool water is unfrozen, restart the filtration system.

  1. Clean the winter cover and remove it from the pool.
  2. Reposition and reconnect the filtration system components (hoses to skimmer and water return).
  3. Fill the pool with water to the middle of the skimmer. Check for rust or leaks, especially around the skimmer and water return. Repair any issues promptly.
  4. Clean the pool bottom by vacuuming leaves and dirt. Set the filter to "DRAIN" to clean without passing water through the filter, which keeps the sand clean and delays the next "CLEAN" operation.
  5. Adjust water parameters with chemicals recommended by your dealer for opening.

Do not empty the pool completely unless necessary, and do not leave it empty for extended periods. Ensure the skimmer and water return do not leak, as leaks can damage the structure. Never pour chemicals through the skimmer.
