For Your Safety
Most electrical accidents are caused by carelessness or ignorance. Combine basic knowledge of electricity, a healthy respect for it, and common sense for safe household electrical repairs. Follow these guidelines:
- Before working on a circuit, go to the main service panel and remove the fuse or trip the breaker that controls that circuit. Tape a sign to the panel warning others to leave the circuit alone while you work.
- Before touching any wire, use a voltage tester to make sure it's not live.
- When checking for voltage in a receptacle, check both outlets – each may be controlled by a separate wiring circuit.
- When replacing fuses, turn off the main power first. Make sure your hands and feet are dry, and place one hand behind your back to prevent electricity from making a complete circuit through your chest. Touch a plug fuse only by its insulated rim. Remove cartridge fuses with a fuse puller.
- Use tools with insulated handles and ladders made of wood or fiberglass.
- Keep dry-chemical fire extinguishers in the kitchen, basement, and workshop.
- Never disable grounding devices. Ensure all appliances requiring grounding are properly grounded, and that the electrical system itself is properly grounded.
- Meet or exceed all electrical code requirements that cover the work you are doing.
- Always work with enough light to see what you are doing; it's easy to make mistakes when working in dim light.
- When in doubt about the safety of any electrical repair or test, call in a professional.
Consult a Qualified Electrician to Ensure Correct Branch Circuit Conductor.
Electrical Installation Instructions
Step 1: Power Off
Place the wall switch to the "OFF" position [?]. Depending on your home's fuse box type:
- Option A: Place the main (Master) switch to the "OFF" position, cutting off power to your entire home
- Option B: Turn off the individual switch that provides power to where the fixture will be installed.
- Alternative (Fuse Box): Place the main (Master) switch to the "OFF" position, or unscrew the fuse that provides power to where the fixture will be installed.
Diagram Description (FIG. 1, 2, 3): These figures illustrate turning off the power. FIG. 1 shows a wall switch in the "OFF" position. FIG. 2 shows a breaker panel with the main switch and an individual breaker in the "OFF" position. FIG. 3 shows a fuse box with a fuse being unscrewed.
Step 2: Cleaning Instructions
Before cleaning your lamp, turn off the switch or power source. Wipe the lamp with a soft, damp cloth.
Step 3: Assembly and Wiring (Diagram Description)
The chandelier assembly involves connecting wires and mounting components. The diagram shows an exploded view of the fixture:
- Outlet Box (not provided): This is where the fixture connects to the home's wiring.
- Mounting Bracket (Support de montage): Secured to the outlet box with outlet box screws (Vis de soutien).
- Wires: From the outlet box, you will see a White neutral wire (Fil blanc), a Black live wire (Fil noir), and a Ground wire (Fil de mise à la terre).
- Wire Connectors (Connecteur de fil): Used to join the fixture's wires to the house wires (e.g., white to white, black to black, ground to ground).
- Canopy (Couvercle): Covers the wiring and mounting bracket at the ceiling.
- Rods (Tiges): Connect the canopy to the decorative nut and the shade.
- Decorative Nut (Écrou décorative): Secures the rods and the shade.
- Shade (Abat-jour): The main light-diffusing component of the fixture.
- Socket (Douille): Holds the light bulb.
