Introduction
Congratulations on choosing the Scala Rider Q1 for your motorcycle helmet. This manual will guide you through the installation and operation of your Scala Rider Q1. If you purchased the Q1 TeamSet, the package includes two Scala Rider Q1 units.
The Scala Rider Q1 offers:
- Full Duplex Intercom: Rider-to-passenger communication.
- Click-to-Link™: Spontaneous intercom feature allowing communication with nearby Scala Rider users without prior pairing.
- Multipoint Connectivity: Connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously, such as mobile phones, GPS devices, or MP3 players.
- Entertainment: Wireless audio streaming via A2DP and AVRCP, wired connection for non-Bluetooth MP3 players, and built-in FM radio with 6 station presets and automatic tuning.
Key technologies include AGC (Automatic Gain Control) for volume adjustment, VOX (Voice Activation) for hands-free operation, and PLC (Packet Loss Concealment) to compensate for audio dropouts in noisy environments. Status indicators provide information on connection status.

Package Contents
The package typically includes:

Note: If you purchased the Q1 TeamSet, you will receive two of each item listed above.
Installation
The Scala Rider Q1 can be mounted to your helmet using either a clamp or adhesive pad.
Method A: Using the Clamp Mount
- Release the two screws using the provided Allen wrench.
- Attach the clamp to the helmet, between the outer shell and the inner padding.
- Re-tighten the two screws to secure the clamp.
- Slide the Scala Rider unit onto the clamp.
Method B: Using the Adhesive Pad
- Clean the helmet surface thoroughly with the provided alcohol pad.
- Peel the protective backing from the adhesive pad.
- Carefully position and press the adhesive pad onto the helmet for at least 15 seconds. Allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours for optimal adhesion.
- Slide the Scala Rider unit onto the mounted adhesive plate.
Speaker and Microphone Placement
- Position the speakers inside the helmet, directly aligned with your ears, for optimal audio quality. Use the included booster pads if necessary to bring the speakers closer to your ears.
- The corded microphone is recommended for full-face helmets. Position the microphone in front of your mouth. Adjust its position for clear voice transmission.
- The hybrid microphone can be attached using the included Velcro pad. Open the helmet's inner lining to secure the microphone.
Basic Operations
Powering On/Off
- To Power On: Press and hold the 'IC' button for 2 seconds. You will hear a rising tone and see three blue flashes.
- To Power Off: Press and hold the 'IC' button for 2 seconds. You will hear a falling tone and see three red flashes.
Volume Adjustment
- Press the '+V' button to increase volume.
- Press the '-V' button to decrease volume.
Mute Speakers
- Press both '+V' and '-V' buttons simultaneously to mute the speakers.
Battery Status
- While in standby mode, press and hold '+V' for 2 seconds to check battery status: Blue indicates fully charged, Purple indicates partially charged, and Red indicates low battery.
VOX (Voice Activation)
- To Enable/Disable VOX: In standby mode, press and hold both 'MM' and 'IC' buttons for 5 seconds. Follow the voice prompts. VOX allows for hands-free operation of key functions. You can adjust VOX sensitivity levels for optimal performance.
Click-to-Link™
- To Enable/Disable Click-to-Link™: In standby mode, press and hold both '+V' and '-V' buttons for 2 seconds. A blue flash indicates activation, and a red flash indicates deactivation. This feature is enabled by default.
Intercom
- The Scala Rider Q1 supports full-duplex intercom communication between rider and passenger.
- Pairing Intercom Units: Ensure both units are in standby mode (single blue flash every 3 seconds). On one unit, press and hold the 'IC' button for 5 seconds until the indicator light flashes rapidly. The second unit will then pair automatically. If pairing is not completed within 2 minutes, the unit will return to standby mode.
- Making an Intercom Call: Briefly press the 'IC' button once, or speak into the microphone if VOX is enabled.
- Ending an Intercom Call: Briefly press the 'IC' button once. VOX intercom calls will end automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity.
- Intercom Compatibility: The Scala Rider Q1 is compatible with most Scala Rider models and the Schuberth SRC System™. Intercom range may vary depending on the paired devices.
Bluetooth Connectivity
Pairing Bluetooth Devices
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your device (phone, GPS, MP3 player).
- Put your Scala Rider Q1 into pairing mode by pressing and holding '+V' for at least 5 seconds until the red and blue LEDs flash alternately (for Channel 1) or '-V' for at least 5 seconds (for Channel 2).
- Search for Bluetooth devices on your phone/GPS/MP3 player and select 'Scala Rider'.
- If prompted for a PIN, enter '0000' (four zeros).
- The Scala Rider will confirm successful pairing with a slow blue flashing light.
Connecting to Mobile Phones, GPS, or MP3 Players
- Making and Receiving Calls: Use the 'MM' button to answer or reject calls. Press 'MM' to answer, or remain silent for 15 seconds to reject. Press 'MM' again to end a call.
- Voice Dialing: Press and hold 'MM' and 'IC' simultaneously and follow voice prompts (if supported by your phone).
- Redialing: Press 'MM' and 'IC' simultaneously for 2 seconds.
- Speed Dial: Triple-press the 'MM' button.
- Setting Default Phone: During an active call, press and hold '+V' for 5 seconds to set the current phone as the default.
- Switching Between Default Phones: In standby mode, press and hold 'MM' for 5 seconds.
Music Playback (A2DP/AVRCP)
- Play/Pause: In standby mode, press 'MM'.
- Next Track: Press 'MM' while music is playing.
- Previous Track: Double-press 'MM' while music is playing.
- Wired MP3 Connection: Use the included USB cable to connect non-Bluetooth MP3 players to the Scala Rider's USB port.
Music Sharing
Share music with a passenger using the Music Sharing feature. Both units must be paired and within range (10 meters). While listening to music via A2DP, press and hold '+V' or '-V' for 2 seconds to start or cancel music sharing.
FM Radio
Radio Functions
- To Turn On Radio: Double-press the 'MM' button in standby mode.
- To Turn Off Radio: Press and hold the 'MM' button for 2 seconds.
- Scan for Next Station: Press and hold '+V' or '-V' for 2 seconds while the radio is on.
- Save Station: Press 'MM' within 20 seconds of finding a station to save it to a preset channel.
Tuning and Scanning
- Manual Tuning: Press and hold '+V' or '-V' for 2 seconds to scan up or down the frequency band.
- Automatic Tuning (RDS): Press and hold '-V' for 5 seconds to automatically scan and store up to 6 available FM stations. You can repeat this to find more stations.
- RDS (Radio Data System): Press and hold '+V' and '-V' simultaneously for 2 seconds to enable or disable RDS, which automatically selects the strongest signal for a selected station.
Troubleshooting
Resetting the Unit
If your Scala Rider unit becomes unresponsive, perform a reset by turning it off and on again (press 'IC' for 2 seconds).
Re-Pairing Devices
- In standby mode, press and hold '+V' for 5 seconds until the LED flashes red/blue.
- Press and hold 'MM' for 2 seconds until the LED flashes purple five times. This will clear all previously paired devices. You will then need to re-pair your devices.
