5. Riding in a Group

Your PACKTALK PRO offers three alternative intercom communication modes: the traditional Bluetooth protocol, Live Intercom, and Cardo's DMC (Dynamic Mesh Communication) technology. DMC is the best way to communicate in a group. In DMC mode, you can instantly create or join a dynamic, fluid network for conference-mode communication with up to 15 riders. Unlike Bluetooth, DMC allows everyone in the group to stay true to their riding style, overtake others, or leave the group without disrupting the communication of other riders. Private conversations with another rider are also possible via DMC Intercom.

Naturally, you can also connect to your devices like smartphones or GPS via Bluetooth to communicate with riders whose headsets do not feature DMC technology. (See Bluetooth Intercom on page 23 for more information. How does DMC work?)

Anyone can start a new DMC group. In DMC Intercom mode, other riders can join, leave, or rejoin active DMC groups without disrupting the ongoing conversation of other group members. If a group member goes out of range, the remaining riders will automatically reconnect with a member within range within seconds, bypassing the unavailable rider. This way, all riders remain connected. When you join a new DMC group, you automatically leave your existing DMC group.

5.1 DMC Intercom

With DMC Intercom, you can communicate with other riders in your DMC group. For more information on creating DMC intercom groups, see "Creating DMC Intercom Groups" on page 20.

With DMC Intercom, all riders in a group can communicate hands-free. A rider who is a member of the group does not need to perform any additional steps to speak with or hear other riders in the group.

With DMC Intercom, you can also:

  • Have a private chat with another rider in the DMC group; see "Private Chat" on page 21.
  • Add a non-DMC passenger; see "Using DMC Intercom" on page 21.
  • Mute or unmute DMC intercom groups; see "Muting/Unmuting DMC Intercom Groups" on page 22.
  • Leave DMC intercom groups; see "Leaving DMC Intercom Groups" on page 20.
  • Listen to music in DMC intercom groups; see "Multiple Audio Sources and Volume Control" on page 23.
  • Switch between DMC Intercom and Bluetooth Intercom; see "Switching Between Intercom Modes" on page 27.

5.1.1 Creating and Using DMC Intercom Groups

You can manage DMC intercom groups according to your needs, such as creating groups, joining groups, leaving or rejoining them, or changing your active group.

DMC intercom groups can be created by any rider in the group. Each group can have up to 15 riders.

When creating the group, all members should be within 5 meters (16 feet) of each other.

If the connection to your DMC group is interrupted, you remain part of the group. As soon as you are within range of any group member, you will be automatically reconnected. If your DMC group splits and some group members remain within range of each other, but no longer within range of all group members, you can still communicate with the members within range. As soon as you are within range of any group member, you will be automatically reconnected.

5.1.1.1 Creating DMC Intercom Groups

  1. Press and hold the [All Bikers] button for 5 seconds. The LED flashes rapidly red and green.
  2. Each time a group member successfully joins, the LED of the joined device flashes purple. Once all members have joined, the DMC intercom conference call will start automatically.

5.1.1.2 Joining DMC Intercom Groups

You can join or rejoin a DMC intercom group that has previously been created.

Joining an Existing DMC Group:

  1. The group administrator approves the new rider's entry by selecting "Add Biker" in the Cardo Connect app.
  2. The new rider must press and hold the [Control Wheel] for 5 seconds. The LED flashes rapidly red and green.

The color of the flashing LED indicates whether you have been added to the group:

  • Purple: You have joined the group.
  • Yellow: You cannot join the group because the maximum number of riders has already been reached.
  • Red: Joining failed.

5.1.1.3 Leaving DMC Intercom Groups

If you leave a DMC intercom group, you must rejoin the group if you wish to reconnect with the group.

5.2 Adding Non-DMC Passengers/Riders

You can leave the DMC group via the Cardo Connect app or by resetting the device to factory settings.

5.2.1 Using DMC Intercom

5.2.1.1 Adding a Non-DMC Passenger

With the DMC Bridging function, a non-DMC passenger can be added to the intercom group.

Adding Non-DMC Passengers/Riders: Use the Cardo Connect app to add a Bluetooth passenger.

The passenger must initiate the Bluetooth intercom pairing.

Starting/Ending Intercom with a Non-DMC Passenger: Tap the [Intercom] button 3 times.

5.2.1.2 Private Chat

Have a private chat with a specific member of the DMC group. This option is also available with the Cardo Mobile app.

Private Chat:

  1. In the mobile app, select the rider you wish to speak to privately.
  2. Tap the [Control Wheel] twice to start or end a private chat.

5.2.1.3 Muting/Unmuting DMC Intercom Groups

When you mute DMC Intercom, the microphone and speakers are muted for the intercom group's communication. The microphone and speakers remain active for calls and music. When unmuted, group communication is possible again.

Mute/Unmute DMC Group: Press and hold the wheel on your device for 2 seconds.

5.2.1.4 Starting/Ending Call Sharing

Start/End Call Sharing: Press and hold for 2 seconds to share a phone call with the riders in the DMC group. All riders can participate in the phone call.

5.3 Bluetooth Intercom

Your device features Live Intercom technology with automatic reconnection to ensure seamless communication. If the device detects a connection interruption on the other side, it will automatically attempt to re-establish the connection. An audible announcement "Reconnecting" signals the ongoing process, accompanied by regular beeps every 20 seconds as a notification. Users can manually end reconnection attempts by tapping the intercom button once. The reconnection sequence is limited to 5 minutes; after that, the intercom will disconnect if a successful reconnection has not been established.

For increased efficiency, reconnection is initiated by both sides when supported devices are connected, allowing for a faster process. However, if a supported device is connected to another Bluetooth device, reconnection attempts are initiated only by the supported device's side. This feature ensures a hassle-free and user-friendly experience, maintaining continuous communication in various scenarios.

* Please note that Bluetooth intercom requires manual initiation for the first connection.

To connect your device to another device with Bluetooth Intercom, such as a Cardo Bluetooth device or other Bluetooth-enabled devices, the channels of the respective devices must be paired first. Once paired, the device will automatically recognize the other device as long as they are within range.

By pairing one channel, a unit previously paired to that channel will be replaced by the new unit.

The intercom range with other models is limited to the distance of the device with the lower range.

5.3.1 Setting Up Non-DMC Intercom

DMC is always the best way to connect a group of riders. If you are riding with a group of riders who do not have DMC devices (like Bluetooth communication devices from Cardo or other brands), you can create or join a non-DMC group using your device in Bluetooth mode. Participating riders will be connected in a chain with a maximum of four riders.

Setting up a Non-DMC Intercom Connection (Cardo or Non-Cardo):

  1. Ensure your unit is in Bluetooth Intercom standby mode (blue LED flashes slowly). If your device is not in Bluetooth Intercom mode, use the Cardo Connect app. Select Intercom, then Bluetooth mode. For more information, see "Switching Between Intercom Modes" on page 27.
  2. Universal Bluetooth Intercom: The third-party device should be in pairing mode.
  3. Start 2-way Pairing: Select Intercom, Switch to Bluetooth Mode, Select Bluetooth Rider. Bluetooth intercom pairing must be initiated on the other device.
  4. Add 3rd Rider: Rider 1 or Rider 2 connects to the additional rider.

5.3.2 Making/Ending Bluetooth Intercom Calls

To start communication with one rider: Tap once or say "Hey Cardo, call intercom" or "Hey Cardo, end intercom."

To start or end communication with Rider 2: Tap twice or say "Hey Cardo, call intercom" or "Hey Cardo, end intercom."

5.3.2.2 Receiving Bluetooth Intercom Calls

When another paired device calls you via Bluetooth Intercom, the call will be connected immediately.

5.4 Sharing Music

You can listen to music together with a passenger. Music can only be shared with one rider at a time. If the Music Sharing function is active, Bluetooth Intercom calls are disabled. If you have two different mobile phones paired with your device, the music will be shared from the mobile phone that was last used to play music. If you stop the Music Sharing function, music will continue to play only on your device.

To start sharing:

  1. Set a sharing partner via the Cardo Connect app. (If you have a Duo set, the sharing partner is pre-configured.)
  2. Start music playback.
  3. Press and hold for 2 seconds to start music sharing.

To stop sharing: Press and hold for 2 seconds.

5.5 Switching Between Intercom Modes

Your PACKTALK PRO operates in only one intercom mode at a time. The LED color indicates the current intercom mode:

  • In DMC Intercom mode, the LED flashes green approximately every 4 seconds.
  • In Bluetooth Intercom mode, the LED flashes blue approximately every 4 seconds.

To switch between intercom modes: Press the [IC Intercom] and [Mobile] buttons for 5 seconds. Or use the Cardo Connect app. The LED color will change, and a voice announcement will indicate the current intercom mode.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Restart

If your PACKTALK PRO becomes unresponsive, reset the device in one of the following ways:

  • Turn the device off and then on again (see Turning the Device On/Off).
  • Press and hold the [Control Wheel] and [Intercom] buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds for a device restart.

6.2 Resetting to Factory Settings

This option erases all paired units, devices, and all configuration settings.

To reset to factory settings via the device:

  1. Ensure your PACKTALK PRO is in standby mode.
  2. Press and hold the [Control Wheel] and [Intercom] buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds.
  3. The LED flashes red 5 times.

The device can also be reset to factory settings via the Cardo Connect app.

7. Device Personalization

Make the most of your PACKTALK PRO by changing settings and customizing your device via the Cardo Connect app on iOS or Android devices according to your personal preferences.

7.1 Parallel Audio Streaming

With parallel audio streaming, you can make a call or Bluetooth intercom call, listen to other audio sources like music or FM radio, and simultaneously hear GPS instructions.

  • On some iOS devices, parallel audio streaming (e.g., music player or GPS navigation) may not function correctly due to limitations of the connected device.
  • In some cases, parallel audio streaming may not function correctly (music player or GPS navigation device) due to limitations of the connected device.
  • Cardo recommends that during a 3-way or 4-way Bluetooth intercom conference call, the rider connected only by an intercom call receives mobile phone instructions and GPS instructions.
  • The Music Sharing function cannot be used for voice messages with riders during parallel audio streaming.
  • During an ongoing DMC intercom call, music can be played in the background.

Purchasing products from such websites is at your own risk. Cardo always strives to offer high-quality products and exceptional customer service. The dealers we select share our philosophy. Purchasing from unauthorized dealers from the grey market is counterproductive and negatively impacts online customers who may receive used, counterfeit, or defective products or devices without warranty service.
