Wiring

Caution:

  • Do not touch live wires.
  • Install an external circuit breaker to guard against short-circuiting.
  • Use appropriate circuit protection devices.
  • Unused pins should not be connected, as this may damage the device.
  • Double-check all wiring before turning on the power supply.
  • To avoid damaging the wire, do not exceed a maximum torque of 0.5 N·m (5 kgf·cm).
  • Do not use tin, solder, or any substance on stripped wire that might cause the wire strand to break.
  • Install at maximum distance from high-voltage cables and power equipment.

Wiring Procedure

Use crimp terminals for wiring with 26-12 AWG wire (0.13 mm²–3.31 mm²).

  1. Strip the wire to a length of 7±0.5mm (0.250–0.300 inches).
  2. Unscrew the terminal to its widest position before inserting the wire.
  3. Insert the wire completely into the terminal for a proper connection.
  4. Tighten the terminal securely to prevent the wire from pulling free.

Power Supply

The V1040-T20B requires an external 12 or 24VDC power supply. The permissible input voltage range is 10.2-28.8VDC with less than 10% ripple.

❗ The power supply must include double insulation. Outputs must be rated as SELV/PELV/Class 2/Limited Power.

ⓘ Do not connect the 'Neutral' or 'Line' signal of 110/220VAC to the device's 0V pin.

  • Install an external circuit breaker to guard against short-circuiting.
  • Double-check all wiring before turning on the power supply.
  • In case of voltage fluctuations or non-conformity to power supply specifications, connect the device to a regulated power supply.

Image Description: A wiring diagram shows the connection of the power supply to the controller, including a circuit protection device and earthing connections.

Earthing the OPLC

To maximize system performance and avoid electromagnetic interference:

  • Mount the controller on a metal panel.
  • Connect the functional earth terminal of the OPLC, and the common and ground lines of I/Os, directly to the system's earth ground.
  • Use the shortest and thickest possible wire for ground wiring.

Communication Ports

The series includes a USB port, 2 RS232/RS485 serial ports, and a CANbus port. An optional Ethernet or serial (COM 3) port can be added.

Refer to the Technical Library at www.unitronics.com for the most updated port information.

Caution: Turn off power before making communication connections. Always use appropriate port adapters.

The USB port is used for programming, OS download, and PC access. COM port 1 function is suspended when the USB port is physically connected to a PC.

Serial ports are RJ-11 type and can be set to RS232 or RS485 via DIP switches.

  • RS232 is used for downloading programs from a PC and communicating with serial devices/applications (e.g., SCADA).
  • RS485 is used for multi-drop networks supporting up to 32 devices.

Pinouts

Pinout tables detail the signals for PLC ports.

Image Description: Pinout tables detail the connections for RS232, RS485, and Controller Port signals. Standard programming cables may not support pins 1 and 6 for RS232. For RS485, pins 1 and 6 are used for signals A and B respectively.

RS232 to RS485: Changing DIP Switch Settings

Ports are factory set to RS232. To change settings, remove the Snap-in I/O Module (if installed) and adjust DIP switches.

Installing a Snap-in I/O Module

ⓘ Before installing a Snap-In Module, ensure the Communication Module Cover is closed.

  1. Remove the I/O connector cap.
  2. Align the circular guidelines on the Snap-in I/O Module with the slots on the controller.
  3. Apply even pressure on all 4 corners until a 'click' is heard. Check alignment on all sides and corners. The module is now installed.

Image Description: Illustrations demonstrate how to install a Snap-in I/O Module by aligning guidelines and pressing locking buttons.

Removing a Snap-in I/O Module

  1. Locate the four buttons on the controller's sides (two on each side).
  2. Press and hold the buttons to open the locking mechanism.
  3. Gently rock the module side-to-side to ease it out of the controller.

Image Description: Illustrations demonstrate how to remove a Snap-in I/O Module by pressing locking buttons and gently rocking the module.

CANbus

These controllers feature a CANbus port for creating decentralized control networks using protocols like CANopen (up to 127 controllers/devices), CANlayer 2, J1939, or Unitronics' proprietary UniCAN (up to 60 controllers, 512 data bytes/scan).

The CANbus port is galvanically isolated.

CANbus Wiring

Use twisted-pair cable; DeviceNet® thick shielded twisted pair cable is recommended.

Network terminators, supplied with the controller, must be placed at each end of the CANbus network. Resistance should be set to 1%, 121Ω, 1/4W.

Connect the ground signal to the earth at only one point, near the power supply. The network power supply does not need to be at the end of the network.
