Piecing Instructions

Note: Pay attention to the unit orientations while assembling the various components.

Step 1: Unit 1 Construction

Sew one 1 1/4" x 30 1/2" Fabric C strip to each side of the 36 1/2" x 30 1/2" Fabric A rectangle. Sew one 1 1/4" x 38" Fabric C strip to the top and bottom of the Fabric A rectangle to make one 38" x 32" Unit 1 rectangle.

Diagram 1 Description:

Diagram 1 shows a central rectangle labeled 'A' (36 1/2" x 30 1/2") with four strips attached: two 'C' strips (1 1/4" x 30 1/2") on the sides and two 'C' strips (1 1/4" x 38") on the top and bottom, forming a larger rectangle labeled 'Unit 1' (38" x 32" unfinished).

Step 2: Quilt Center Construction

Sew one 1 3/4" x 32" Fabric B strip to each side of the Unit 1 rectangle. Sew one 2 1/4" x 40 1/2" Fabric B strip to the top and bottom of the Unit 1 rectangle to make the 40 1/2" x 35 1/2" Quilt Center.

Diagram 2 Description:

Diagram 2 shows the 'Unit 1' rectangle (38" x 32" unfinished) with four Fabric B strips attached: two 1 3/4" x 32" strips on the sides and two 2 1/4" x 40 1/2" strips on the top and bottom, forming the 'Quilt Center' (40 1/2" x 35 1/2" unfinished).

Step 3: Unit 2 Construction

Place one 3 1/2" Fabric C square on top of one 3 1/2" Fabric E square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square. Sew 1/4" away from each side of the drawn diagonal line. Cut the two squares apart on the drawn diagonal line to make two half-square triangles. Trim the half-square triangles to measure 3" to make two Unit 2 squares. Repeat to make an additional fifty-four Unit 2 squares.

Diagram 3, 4, 5 Description:

Diagrams 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the process of creating Unit 2 squares. A square (C) is placed on another square (E), a diagonal line is drawn, and stitching occurs on either side of the line. The squares are cut apart and trimmed to create 3" x 3" unfinished Unit 2 squares. A total of 56 Unit 2 squares are needed.

Step 4 & 5: Unit 3 Construction

Sew one 1 3/4" x WOF Fabric E strip to the left side of one 1 3/4" x WOF Fabric D strip to make one 3" x WOF Strip Set. Repeat to make an additional four Strip Sets. From the five Strip Sets cut 112 (3" x 1 3/4") Unit 3 rectangles.

Diagram 6 & 7 Description:

Diagrams 6 and 7 show the creation of Unit 3 rectangles. Fabric E and Fabric D strips are sewn together to form strip sets, from which 112 Unit 3 rectangles (3" x 1 3/4" unfinished) are cut.

Step 6: Unit 4 Construction

Sew together two Unit 3 rectangles lengthwise to make one 3" Unit 4 square. Repeat to make an additional fifty-five Unit 4 squares.

Diagram 8 Description:

Diagram 8 illustrates the assembly of two Unit 3 rectangles to form a 3" x 3" unfinished Unit 4 square. A total of 56 Unit 4 squares are needed.

Step 7: Block One Construction

Sew one Unit 2 square to the left side of one Unit 4 square to make the top row. Sew one Unit 4 square to the left side of one Unit 2 square to make the bottom row. Sew together the two rows lengthwise to make one 5 1/2" Block One square. Repeat to make an additional twenty-seven Block One squares.

Diagram 9 Description:

Diagram 9 shows the assembly of Block One. A top row consists of a Unit 4 square next to a Unit 2 square. A bottom row consists of a Unit 2 square next to a Unit 4 square. These rows are sewn together to form a 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" unfinished Block One square. A total of 28 Block One squares are needed.

Step 8: Border Construction

Sew together three Block One squares, one 5 1/2" Fabric E square, and three Block One squares, in that order from top to bottom, to make the 5 1/2" x 35 1/2" Left Side Border. Repeat to make the Right Side Border.

Diagram 10 & 11 Description:

Diagrams 10 and 11 illustrate the construction of the side borders. The Left Side Border and Right Side Border are made by arranging three Block One squares, followed by a 5 1/2" Fabric E square, and then three more Block One squares, resulting in a 5 1/2" x 35 1/2" unfinished border.

Step 9: Top and Bottom Border Construction

Sew together one 5 1/2" Fabric E square, eight Block One squares, and one 5 1/2" Fabric E square, in that order from left to right, to make the 5 1/2" x 50 1/2" Top Border. Repeat to make the Bottom Border.

Diagram 12 & 13 Description:

Diagrams 12 and 13 show the construction of the Top and Bottom Borders. These borders are made by arranging a 5 1/2" Fabric E square, followed by eight Block One squares, and ending with another 5 1/2" Fabric E square, creating a 5 1/2" x 50 1/2" unfinished border.

Quilt Assembly

Step 10: Attaching Borders

Sew the Left Side Border and Right Side Border to the left and right sides of the Quilt Center. Sew the Top Border and Bottom Border to the top and to the bottom of the Quilt Center.

Step 11: Adding Fabric B Strips

Sew one 1 1/2" x 45 1/2" Fabric B strip to each side of the Quilt Center. Sew one 1 1/2" x 52 1/2" Fabric B strip to the top and bottom of the Quilt Center.

Step 12: Adding Fabric D Strips

Sew one 3" x 47 1/2" Fabric D strip to each side of the Quilt Center. Sew one 3" x 57 1/2" Fabric D strip to the top and bottom of the Quilt Center to make the quilt top.

Finishing

Step 13: Preparing Backing

Prepare backing using two widths of fabric. Press seams open. Trim to 65" x 60".

Step 14: Layering and Basting

Layer the quilt, batting, and backing. Baste layers together.

Step 15: Quilting

Quilt as desired.

Step 16: Trimming
